Japan Grants Patent for EnergySail
The Japan Patent Office has granted a patent to Eco Marine Power (EMP) for its innovative EnergySail technology, an advanced rigid sail device that can be fitted with a range of renewable energy technologies such as solar panels or wind power devices. With the patent in place, EMP can now begin licensing the technology to proceed so that commercial production of the sail and associated technologies can begin in 2018.

MARAD to Fund Study on LNG Conversions
The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced it has entered a $900,000 cooperative agreement with Totem Ocean Trailer Express Inc. (TOTE) to study the costs and benefits of converting vessel to liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion. Under the agreement, TOTE who is to convert its containership MV Midnight Sun to operate on dual fuel LNG, will work with MARAD to obtain pre- and post-conversion air emissions data, as well as operational information.

Marine lubricants and greases provider Total Lubmarine informs it has resumed all services based out of the Port of Tianjin following the deadly explosions that rocked the port August 12. The company, which operates in more than 1,000 ports worldwide, said the explosions cause it only minor disruption as its warehouse and delivery agent facility remained undamaged, although the port’s customs building has been badly impacted.

An updated version of the “Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Selection Guide” is now available, the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced today. Developed by the Ship Operations Cooperative Program with funding from MARAD’s Maritime Environmental and Technical Assistance (META) Program, the guide provides ship owners and operators information on scrubber technology to assist the industry in meeting new sulfur emissions standards.

BHC Fast Ferry Returns After Engine Refit
Boston Harbor Cruises’ (BHC) Provincetown fast ferry, Salacia, has returned to service following an almost $3 million engine refit which saw the vessel in dry dock from January through May 2015. BHC commissioned the installation of four MTU 12V4000M64 engines from Stewart & Stevenson Power Products, LLC. The engines were manufactured by Rolls Royce Power Systems subsidiary MTU, and assembled in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

MSC Oscar, the newest cargo vessel built for Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), will launch in January 2015, and at 19,224 teu, the containership will take the record for world’s largest. MSC Oscar possesses a nominal capacity of 19,224 teu, officially making the ship the largest globally, edging China Shipping Container Lines’ 19,100 teu CSCL Globe which just recently took the title from Maersk’s 18,270 teu Triple-E class.

HHI Names World’s Largest Containership
The world’s largest containership was named at a ceremony held by builder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) this week. The ship, named CSCL Globe, is the first of five 19,000 TEU containerships for China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), and takes the title of world’s largest containership from Maersk Line’s 18,000 teu Triple E class vessels. Measuring 400 meters in length, 58.6 meters in width and 30.5 meters in depth, CSCL Globe is as large as four soccer fields.
