CMA CGM to Apply Low Sulfur Surcharge
CMA CGM said it will implement a low sulfur surcharge on all its trades in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) and for all cargos as of January 1, 2015. MARPOL Annex VI regulations for the prevention of air pollution from ships assign Sulfur Oxides (SOx) Emission Control Areas (ECA) with more stringent controls on sulfur emissions. Stricter regulations covering the sulfur content of fuel oil will be strengthened by local regulators in the European Union, U.S. and Canada.

Chandler Celebrates 25 Years with Bay Diesel
With more than 40 years experience in the engine business, Lynn Chandler, Bay Diesel's Executive Vice President for Chesapeake Service, celebrates his 25th anniversary with the company. Chandler began his journey on a farm in Iowa before joining the United States Navy as a Seabee. In 1979, his military career led him to the Hampton Roads area where he met Scott Wheeler and eventually joined Bay Diesel.

Bureau Veritas Awards GTT AIP for LNG Bunker Mast

Rolls-Royce Acquires Power Systems Unit
Rolls-Royce today announced the completion of its acquisition of Rolls-Royce Power Systems (RRPS). The move follows an announcement made on March 7, 2014 that the Board of Management of Daimler AG had decided to exercise the put option relating to its 50% equity interest in RRPS and the announcement on April 16, 2014 that Rolls-Royce and Daimler had agreed on a fair market valuation for the shareholding of €2.43 billion.

Voith Bags Largest Marine Order to Date
In South Africa’s largest local shipbuilding contract Transnet National Ports Authority has ordered nine new Voith Water Tractors (VWT) for use in several ports across the country, marking the largest order in the history of Voith marine technology. The VWT will be built by South African Shipyards in Durban over the next 42 months. Eight of the tugs will be identical in construction with a length of 31 meters and a beam of 12.5 meters.

MARAD: Total Fuel Cycle Study for Natural Gas

Deltamarin to Outfit First LNG-powered Icebreaker
Deltamarin Ltd. has been awarded a contract by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard Inc. for the entire machinery and technical spaces outfitting production design of the first LNG-powered icebreaker. The vessel is to be built for the Finnish Transport Agencey, and aims to reduce emissions and fuel costs by using both diesel and LNG as fuel. The icebreaker is designed especially for operations in the most challenging icebreaking conditions in the Baltic Sea.

Joint Project Studies Condition-based Engine Monitoring
Classification society ClassNK announced that it will participate in a joint project together with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and MES Technoservice Co., Ltd. ClassNK will support research into the development of condition-based engine monitoring systems for the Mitsui MAN B&W engine. The developed systems will assist in the early detection of abnormalities in electronically-controlled diesel engines in ships.

ClassNk held LNG-Fuelled Vessel Technologies seminars in Shanghai and Singapore on 22 July and 24, July 2014, respectively. With the industry looking to adopt cleaner fuels to meet new environmental regulations as well as future economic growth , the demand for LNG as a fuel is rapidly increasing. Wärtsilä to Divest its Shares in Two-stroke JV
Wärtsilä announced that it will divest its shares in the Qingdao Qiyao Wärtsilä MHI Linshan Marine Diesel Co. Ltd. (QMD), the joint venture company established for manufacturing large low-speed marine diesel engines. Wärtsilä's shares in the joint venture will be transferred to the current majority shareholder, Qingdao Qiyao Linshan Power Development Co. Ltd., a company fully owned by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation. The agreement was signed today in Beijing, China.
