USMRC to Continue LNG Bunkering PIC Course
The U.S. Maritime Resource Center’s (USMRC) Maritime Simulation Institute announced that its inaugural Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Bunkering Person in Charge (PIC) course was a success. The course, which ran July 7-11, was developed on behalf of Harvey Gulf International Marine as it prepares to launch its first dual-fuel offshore supply vessel intended to run primarily on liquefied natural gas. To accommodate future demand, USMRC is adding similar courses every month for the remainder of 2014.

Trident Alliance Formed, First Members Announced
The Trident Alliance, a shipping industry initiative for enforcement of maritime sulphur regulations, has today been formally launched. The Trident Alliance is a coalition of shipowners and operators who share a common interest in robust enforcement of maritime sulphur regulation and are willing to collaborate to help bring it about. The Alliance will partner with other groups who share its interest in robust enforcement, to support this objective.

The Switch to Be Acquired by Yaskawa
Yaskawa Electric Corporation, a company in motion control and robotics, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire The Switch, a supplier of megawatt-class permanent magnet generator and full-power converter packages for wind power and other renewable energy applications. The estimated schedule for closing the deal is within a few weeks. The Switch brand will continue as its own entity for selected markets and applications.

First RSD CNG Tug to Launch in 2016
Three companies have teamed up to bring the first ever Reverse Stern Drive (RSD) Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tug to the market. Damen Shipyards of the Netherlands, German engine manufacturer MTU Friedrichshafen, a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, and Denmark’s SVITZER have embarked on the project with the official launch of the new eco-friendly tug planned for 2016. The new RSD CNG tug combines high power with lower fuel costs and a substantial reduction in emissions.

Imtech, CMAL Win Electric & Hybrid Propulsion Awards
Imtech Marine and Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) have won the Electric & Hybrid Propulsion System and Supplier of the Year Awards at the Electric and Hybrid World Expo, held in Amsterdam. Rotterdam-headquartered Imtech Marine was asked by Ferguson Shipbuilders in Scotland, the yard building the new CMAL ferries, to supply a hybrid propulsion system for the first ever diesel electric, hybrid seagoing ferries in 2011, with the aim of reducing fuel, noise and emissions.

Cat Power Solution for Teekay Offshore
Caterpillar Marine announced that Cat power and propulsion offerings have been selected to provide complete propulsion solutions for four ocean-going towing vessels designed by Ulstein Design and Solutions. Each vessel will have four 9 M 32 C propulsion engines, rated at 4,500 bkW at 600 rpm. Also onboard each vessel will be three Cat C32 auxiliary generator sets rated at 940 ekW at 1,800 rpm as well as one Cat C9 generator set to provide emergency power.

Kappel Propellers for Newbuild Bulk Carriers
Lemissoler Navigation Co. Ltd., the Cyprus-based owner and operator, has selected the MAN Alpha Kappel propeller design for a new series of 8 × 58,500 DWT bulk carriers planned for delivery during 2015 and 2016. The 6.8-meter, slow-running, four-bladed Kappel fixed-pitch propellers will be tailored to the SDARI-designed bulk carriers and a drivetrain powered by an MAN B&W 5S60ME-C engine, economy-rated at 8,050 kW and 89 r/min.

LR Addresses Fuel Changes when Entering and Exiting ECAs
From January 1, 2015, the maximum sulphur content of fuel oil used within the MARPOL Annex VI Emission Control Areas (ECAs) will be 0.10%, unless using an approved alternative means for controlling sulphur emissions. In most cases, the fuel used will be low-sulphur distillate oil (LSDO). Many ships operating both inside and outside ECAs will changeover between LSDO and residual fuel oil (RFO) when entering and exiting ECAs.
