Fuel Futures: Diesel Will Spike on IMO2020

New marine fuel rules to boost diesel prices for at least a year -analystsGlobal prices for diesel and marine fuels should rise by October ahead of a January switchover to new, very low-sulfur marine fuels, and remain higher for at least a year as refiners shift production to make more of the new fuels, analysts said.Marine fuels containing no more than 0.5% sulfur by weight, down from the 3.5% currently used, to power ocean-going vessels will be required for ships without exhaust scrubbers on Jan.

Mercury Marine Expands Diecast Capabilities

The $9M investment provides needed space for capacity increases, allowing the company to make complex blocks, driveshafts, and gearcases for Mercury’s outboards. The addition will be filled with large tonnage die casting equipment containing cutting edge technologies that will drive higher quality and better throughput to keep up with increased engine demand especially with the V8 and V6 product lines.

Alabama's historic Gee's Bend Ferry recently entered service after being converted from geared-diesel to become the first zero-emission, electric-powered passenger/car ferry in the United States. Evinrude Named Official Engine Supplier of American Magic

Evinrude hasannounced that it has been named Official Engine Supplier of New York Yacht Club American Magic, a professional sailing team and Challenger for the 36th America’s Cup. Evinrude will outfit American Magic’s fleet of chase boats with 300 HP E-TEC G2 engines. In addition, Evinrude will provide the organization’s technical crew with a training course at its Sturtevant facility. Each engine will also be custom wrapped with an American flag-based design.The America’s Cup is the highest prize in sailing, and the oldest event in international sports.

Shipbuilding: Hurtigruten Hybrid Construction Forges Ahead

Norwegian company Hurtigruten, the world’s largest expedition cruise operator, is continuing to push the boundaries when it comes to green travel with its order for three hybrid-powered vessels nearing completion, the first ship being due for delivery in May 2019.Two of these revolutionary ships are currently under construction at the Kleven Yard in Ulsteinvik, Norway, the MS Roald Amundsen and its sister ship, the MS Fritjof Nansen, both of which are custom-designed to cope with some of the most extreme conditions seen on our planet, each having a specially-designed, ice-strengthened hull.
