LNG looms as the bridge to a ‘zero emissions’ future for shipping. The advent of industry wide tightening of allowable sulfur emissions is getting nearer. Suddenly, with the deadline now just one year away, the countdown clock will very soon be ticking much louder. Simply stated, the cap on allowable sulfur content in marine fuels, presently at 3.5 percent in many geographical regions, will be reduced to 0.5 percent in January 2020. The 0.1 percent sulfur cap, already in effect since 2015 in coastal Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) in Europe and North America, will remain.

Wärtsilä Propulsion for LNG Bunker Vessel

A new 5,800-cubic-meter LNG bunker and feeder vessel, being built for Sirius Veder Gas AB at Royal Bodewes, Hoogezand, in the Netherlands, will be powered by a Wärtsilä propulsion solution. Wärtsilä, who received the contract in September, will supply a propulsion package comprising a six-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel main engine capable of running on either LNG or diesel, a reduction gearbox with power take-off (PTO), a shaft line suitable for use with environmentally friendly lubricants and equipped with a Wärtsilä Airguard aft seal that allows zero emissions…

In-hull Dual Fuel Engine Conversion an Industry First

To convert its vessel Coral Anthelia to dual fuel operation, Anthony Veder worked with Cat dealer Bolier to complete the industry’s first in-hull retrofit – saving considerable time and money in the process. The project saw the retrofit of a marine diesel engine to dual fuel operation in the hull of a ship without altering the vessel’s structure, limiting any onboard operations or requiring the ship to dock. Gas shipping company Anthony Veder partnered with a team of Dutch partners, including Cat dealer Bolier, to accomplish this industry-first feat – all within less than five weeks.

Tanker Retrofitted with Dual Fuel Engine

Caterpillar Marine informs it has begin a dual fuel engine retrofit conversion onboard the 472-foot Fure West tanker, owned by Furetank Rederi A/B. The MaK M 43 C diesel engine onboard the tanker will be retrofitted in hull to the seven-cylinder M 46 dual fuel platform, with each cylinder offering 900 kW of rated power. Additionally, Caterpillar is also supplying the complete gas system for the tanker, including bunker stations, two LNG tanks measuring 4.15 meters by 24 meters and the vaporizer.

Bolier Completes MaK Dual Fuel Retrofit

In collaboration with Caterpillar / MaK, Bolier has converted an existing 6M43C engine to a 6M46 Dual Fuel onboard the Coral Anthelia. The project was commissioned by Anthony Veder. In 2012 and 2013, Anthony Veder built four new ethylene carriers fitted with MaK 6M43C propulsion engines. The fourth carrier was already in an advanced stage when the decision was made to convert the existing engine to a dual fuel engine. According to Bolier’s customer support manager, Frans Jührend, this is the first upgrade in the world to use this new technique.

Caterpillar Completes 1st Dual Fuel Engine Retrofit

Caterpillar Marine successfully completed the commercial marine industry’s first dual fuel engine retrofit conversion in hull. Performed in under six weeks, Caterpillar Marine along with Cat dealer Bolier, completed an in hull retrofit onboard the Coral Anthelia, an Anthony Veder LNG carrier vessel. The MaK™ M 43 C diesel engine was retrofitted to the 6 cylinder M 46 dual fuel platform, with each cylinder offering 900 kW of rated power. As a result of performing the retrofit within the hull, no modifications had to be done to the ship’s structure and no docking was required.

Getting Real on LNG Fuel

Plentiful supply, low prices and strict regulations on air pollution are fuelling a swift move towards using LNG as fuel for ship propulsion in the USA and Canada. In Europe strict regulation in port is pushing passenger ship owners to use LNG fuel while berthed. For the last two or three years the view about switching to LNG fuel was that it was a chicken and egg situation. That period is over now. The first gas bunker terminals are ready, the first small scale LNG carriers and bunker vessels are in service and the bigger projects are lining up.

Meyer Werft Completes New Dual-fuel LNG Tankship

The new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tanker, 'Coral Energy', is for the Dutch owner Anthony Veder, based in Rotterdam. The ship is the first of a new gas tanker type which is equipped with an eco-friendly dual-fuel engine. The tanker is operated with natural gas bringing the emissions of the vessel to extremely low values which are clearly below the prospective applicable limits for ECA-areas. The vessel was already named in Rotterdam on December 7 by Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands…

Two New Gas Tankships to Fit Wärtsilä DF Propulsion Packages

Wärtsilä  to supply complete dual-fue (DF) propulsion packages for two new gas tankers being built for owners, Anthony Veder. The contract was signed with AVIC-International Shanghai and Avic-Dingheng Shipbuilding Co. Ltd yard, for the two Liquefied Ethylene Gas (LEG)/Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tankers being built for Anthony Veder, the Netherlands-based shipping company specialised in gas transportation, for deployment in the North Sea. SABIC Contracts Two New LNG-Powered Tankships

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) says it is the world's first chemical company to commission LNG-run gas carriers. SABIC's new tankships will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) to transport its olefins products, in anticipation of a European Union directive to drastically reduce sulphur emissions from vessels operating in the North Sea by 2015. The two new gas carriers will be used to transport olefins from a major plant on Teesside, England, to ports in North-West Europe and Scandinavia.

World's First Dual-fuel Ice-class LNG Carrier

LNG Carrier 'Coral Energy' naming ceremony to take place next month at the Port of Rotterdam Cruise Terminal. The new ship is claimed by the Dutch owners, Anthony Veder,  to be world’s first direct driven dual-fuel ice class 1A LNG carrier. Its development started in 2010 in close cooperation with Norwegian gas provider Skangass.
