High in the Arctic Circle lies the Northern Sea Route, one of the planet’s vital shipping arteries. It cuts a journey by almost a third compared to the southern route but it is passing through waters which are mostly frozen.The northern route connects east and west, allowing cargo to be transferred from northern Europe to northeast Asia, via the Bering Strait. It’s a 30% faster passage than the southern Europe-Asia alternative via the Suez Canal and is attractive to shipping companies, thanks to considerable fuel and emission savings.

Yamal Project’s First Ice-going LNG Carrier Launched
The first of 15 ice-going LNG carriers for the Yamal project has been launched and is set to sail the arctic waters from Siberia to Europe and Asia. Built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in its Okpo South Korea yard, the new vessel, SCF Yamal, features three azimuthing thrusters from ABB and has been labeled the world’s most powerful LNG carrier. Marine Transmission Built Arctic Circle Tough
Bowhead Transport's newest addition to its fleet, M/V Unalaq, will service the Alaskan coast, north into the Beaufort Sea. Utilizing Twin Disc's MGX-5135 SC marine transmissions and EC300 Power Commander controls, the shallow-draft landing craft will bring much-needed supplies to this remote area. This includes small, isolated villages far above the Arctic Circle. Unalaq was built to function in Bowhead Transport's lighterage operations. The debate regarding working in and around the Arctic is multi-tiered, with environmental, technical and emergency response heading the list. There is no debate regarding the fuel, money and emissions to be saved by shortening select global shipping routes. In a report from Bloomberg news posted June 13 on http://www.businessweek.com, it was said there will be a rise in dry bulk cargos hauled through Arctic waters this season, a journey that can halve shipping time compared to some Suez Canal shipments, and simultaneously reduce fuel consumption, costs and emissions.
