Ferry Stena Estrid Completes Sea Trials

Stena Line’s "next-generation" ferry Stena Estrid has arrived in Holyhead after completing sea trials and a five-week, 10,000 mile journey from China to the Irish Sea where she will begin service early next year on her inaugural route from Dublin to Holyhead.Designed by Deltamarin and constructed at the China Merchants Jinling Shipbuilding Weihai Shipyard in China, Stena Estrid is the first of Stena RoRo’s nine next-generation E-Flexer Ro-Pax vessels in a series which include five for Stena Line and several additional vessels that will be on long-term charter for other ferry operators.

Ferry Tech: Retractable Bow Foils for M/F Teistin

Innovation in the world of marine design and propulsion continues to move forward at record speed, driven by new emissions regulation and the push toward emission free ships. In September 2019 an innovative new technology from Wavefoil AS of Trondheim, Norway was installed on the Faroese ferry M/F Teistin, the first ship in the world with retractable bow foils that are designed not only for ship stability but also to convert wave energy directly into propulsive thrust.The foils are designed to both help in saving fuel and improving comfort on board.

Voith Delivers First U.S.-Built VSP Units

The first two American-made Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) units have been delivered and installed in the Rodanthe ferry.Rodanthe is a ferry to be operated by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and used in its service to the Outer Banks, a string of barrier islands between North Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean.“With the new VSP units installed, the Rodanthe will offer years of smooth, efficient service to the islands. By linking steering and propulsion together, the VSP allows for fast response and precision movement in even the roughest of waters.

Emissions Levy Can Cut Ship NOx Emissions by 70% -Study

A levy on nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions with revenues earmarked to fund the uptake of NOx abatement measures is believed to be the most promising tool to reduce these ship emissions by up to 70 percent, as revealed by a new study by environmental consultancy IVL and CE Delft. The study, commissioned by Transport & Environment (T&E), identifies the policy options available at the EU level to regulate ship NOx emissions in the EU seas and compares them with the measures to be taken under the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Fuel System Modifications Lead to Fire

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) issued a safety alert to raise awareness regarding the importance of using proper replacement parts and equipment in accordance with their intended purpose. Recently, a casualty occurred on a passenger vessel operating about a mile offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. A crewmember, while making a round in a machinery space, noticed that a small fuel spray fire had developed above one of the four propulsion engines. The crewmember vacated the space and informed the bridge watch.

SNAME Meeting on Financials of LNG

SNAME announced its seventh technical meeting for the 2013-2014 season, during which Dr. Panagiotis Zacharioudakis, Senior Researcher at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), will speak on the subject of “The Financials of LNG.” The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. in The auditorium of Maran and Alpha Tankers, Kallithea, Athens. The use of LNG as marine fuel is a very promising alternative for compliance with environmental regulations, compared to other solutions such as scrubbers and MGO.

Vulkan RATO for Submarine Test Rig

For decades, Vulkan  has been a supplier of couplings, not only for Brazilian offshore industry, but also for military applications. Here business mainly focused on conventional drives such as diesel-electric systems for military ships and submarines. Now Vulkan is positioning itself on the Brazilian market as a system solution provider for nuclear propulsion and supply the Centro Experimental Aramar in Iperó with a RATO S 731T and 14 elastic mounts. The Brazilian government is currently planning the construction of a fleet of six submarines with nuclear propulsion.

'SS United States' Preservation Cash-strapped

The 'SS United States' is sending out what may be its final distress call. The conservancy working to secure a home and purpose for the 990-foot-long ship tells the Associated Press that it could be sold for scrap within two months unless they can raise $500,000 immediately so they can continue negotiations with several parties. Money and time are running out for the historic ocean liner, which carried princes, presidents and celebrities across the Atlantic Ocean in the 1950s and 1960s. The historic trans-Atlantic liner has been berthed on the Philadelphia waterfront since 1996.

Rolls-Royce Wins Major Petrobras Deal to Equip Seven Drill Ships

Rolls-Royce won an order worth more than £100 million to supply integrated power and propulsion systems for seven offshore drilling vessels in Brazil. The ships will be built at the Atlântico Sul shipyard for Brazilian oil company Petrobras. Rolls-Royce will equip each of the seven vessels, which will satisfy local content requirements, with six large thrusters and six Bergen diesel generator sets. Together, the systems will be used to propel the vessels to and from drill sites and to accurately maintain their positioning during drilling operations.

Fairmount Sherpa Tows Rig Atwood Condor

Fairmount Marine’s tug Fairmount Sherpa has delivered rig Atwood Condor fast and safely in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The semi submersible rig was towed from Port Louis, Mauritius, over a distance of 8,100 nautical miles with an average speed of 8.5 knots. The Atwood Condor is a 2012 Singapore build dynamically positioned semi submersible drilling unit capable of operating in 3,050 meters of water and drilling depths up to 12,200 meters. The 118 meter long state-of-theart rig has a accommodation capacity for up to 200 persons. The rig is owned by Atwood Oceanics, headquartered in Houston, US.

Cruise Ship 'Queen Victoria' Propulsion Unit Problem

Cunard's Queen Victoria suffers a problem with one of its propulsion units while on Mediterranean cruise off Portugal. Queen Victoria, which launched in 2007 and has 981 crew and a guest capacity of 1,990, is currently in the Atlantic Ocean off Portugal returning from a Mediterranean cruise where it suffered the problems with one of its propulsion units. Cableship Blaze off Skeleton Coast Forces Abandon Ship

France Telecom-Orange announce abandonment of its cable ship 'Chamarel' off the coast of Namibia. A fire broke out on the cableship Chamarel while returning from a repair operation on the Sat3-Safe cable off the coast of Namibia in the Atlantic Ocean. Despite the crew's efforts to control the fire, the decision was made to abandon the ship and all 56 crew members were safely recovered by a Namibian fishing vessel without injury or incident. They are currently located at the Namibian port, Walvis Bay and will be repatriated in the coming days.

NJ State Police Take Delivery of Moose Boat

Moose Boats delivers M1-44 Patrol Boat to NJ State Police. Moose Boats, an aluminum boat manufacturer, recently delivered a M1-44’ Catamaran to the New Jersey State Police in Point Pleasant, NJ. The M1-44’ is an all aluminum catamaran powered by twin 600hp Cummins diesel engines coupled to twin Hamilton 322 water-jets with Hamilton Blue Arrow Controls and a hydraulically driven fire fighting system with a remote control bow monitor rated for 750 GPM pumping. The M1-44 will serve as a regional marine fire-fighting asset throughout Southern NJ.
