Nordlaks Orders 2nd Live Fish Carrier

Nordlaks is ordering another live fish carrier with gas / battery hybrid propulsion, to reduce the diesel consumption for transporting live fish from 2020. The first live fish carrier is already under construction. Century-old Tall Ship Goes High Tech

The 1914-built three-masted steel bark Statsraad Lehmkuhl is the oldest of the large square riggers still in operation today. The century-old tall ship, which is currently in use as a Norwegian sail-training ship, will be able to cruise out of Bergen harbor next year without any greenhouse gas emissions, thanks to a hybrid power system from Rolls-Royce. Norway’s state-owned company Enova, which works to facilitate the country’s transition to a low-emissions society, is providing just over NOK 4.2 million for an innovative project to equip the historic tall ship with shipboard battery power.

The Switch Partners with Shipbuilder CSIC

Drive train technology specialist The Switch has become one of the first foreign companies to sign a partnership agreement with Chinese shipbuilding conglomerate China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC). On Monday, September 11, The Switch entered into a strategic partnership agreement with CSIC/711, which operates under the direct jurisdiction of CSIC as the sole R&D institute of marine diesel engines in China. A leading state-owned enterprise, CSIC is one of China’s largest shipbuilding and ship repair groups.

Corvus Secures $4.9 Mln Credit Facility

Export Development Canada (EDC) has announced the closing of a CAD$6.5 million (US$4.9 million) contract financing credit facility for Corvus Energy Inc., a Richmond, BC-based  designer, developer and manufactureer of energy storage systems (ESS) and lithium-ion battery solutions for hybrid and electric marine applications. A Hybrid Drive’s Digital Landscape

Hybrid drive and potential fuel savings are well known — from 10 to 30 percent, according to the sources we’ve written about over the years. Less known, is the potential need to purchase some sort of remote monitoring package to complement that diesel-electric or battery hybrid system from a system operator in order to secure the maximum safety benefits. EMP Renewable Energy Battery Solution for Ships

A range of marine battery solutions received approval for use on-board ships or marine related applications such as offshore platforms and renewable energy projects. Available from Eco Marine Power (EMP), a developer of renewable energy solutions for ships, in cooperation with storage batteries and electrical machinery manufacturer Furukawa Battery Company of Japan, the battery range has been accepted for use on classed vessels by ClassNK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai) in addition to having been evaluated by EMP.

The Hybrid Marine Power & Propulsion Conference being held at the RNLI College in Poole, U.K., October 6-8, will bring together an international group of experts armed with the latest knowledge that will assist the sub IMO professional sector to understand the possibilities of utilizing hybrid systems. The aim is to identify the potential for hybrid systems for specific sectors, including diesel / electric / battery for workboats, pilot boats, survey vessels, wind farm support vessels, superyacht tenders, patrol craft, military and unmanned craft.
