Next Generation Marine Power & Propulsion Conference

The Next Generation Marine Power & Propulsion Conference will be held at the Grand Harbour Hotel, Southampton U.K. from April 26 to 28, 2016. The event will bring together an international group of experts armed with the latest knowledge to highlight the potential use of innovative power and propulsion systems. The objective is to identify a range of solutions for workboats, pilot boats, wind farm support vessels, survey vessels, scientific research craft, superyachts, patrol craft, military and unmanned craft.

‘World’s Greenest Cruise Ship’ Construction Underway

Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam pressed the button to officially kick off the construction of hybrid expedition cruise ship MS Roald Amundsen – “the greenest cruise ship the world has ever seen,” according to the ship owner. The new ship is the first of a new generation that will change expedition travel forever, Skjeldam said during the ceremony at Kleven Yards on the western coast of Norway. When launched in 2018, MS Roald Amundsen will be the world’s first expedition cruise ship powered by hybrid battery technology.

Saft to Supply Battery Systems for RRS Sir David Attenborough

Saft will supply two specialized Seanergy marine lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery systems to Rolls-Royce Marine for integration in the hybrid propulsion systems for the polar research vessel RRS Sir David Attenborough. The new vessel, one of the most advanced ever, is being commissioned by the U.K.’s Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) for operation by the British Antarctic Survey. The contract follows an earlier Rolls-Royce Marine contract for a hybrid multi-application vessel for Kystverket, the Norwegian Coastal Administration.

The Next Generation Marine Power & Propulsion event was held in the Grand Harbour conference venue looking out over the Port of Southampton where cruise ships, oil tankers and the world's largest container vessels ply their global trade. The event brought together a broad and unique marine industry group from the UK, EU and US. Bureau Veritas Rules Support Hybrid Power and ESS

Bureau Veritas has issued a new chapter in its rules providing a framework for electric and hybrid power solutions. The new class notations include power management (PM), power back-up (PB) and zero emission (ZE) standards. It is expected that the notations will encourage wider uptake of energy storage systems (ESS) to provide both operational and environmental benefits. Wärtsilä Environmental Efficiency for Hybrid UK Ferry

A new ferry being built at the Cemre shipyard in Turkey for UK operator Wightlink will feature a comprehensive range of modern Wärtsilä equipment and systems to ensure a high level of environmental efficiency. In addition to conventional fuel, the new vessel will be the first ferry to utilzse Wärtsilä hybrid battery technology to improve efficiency, reduce the exhaust emissions and lower the noise level. The scope includes four 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 20 generating sets, electrical and automation (E&A) systems, and a sanitary discharge system.

Cruise Ships & Eco-Trends in Energy Transition

Saft Seanergy Energy Storage Systems Approved by NMA

Saft has obtained approval of its Seanergy marine energy storage system by the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) for use in a variety of hybrid and fully electric propulsion applications. Saft is the only manufacturer of marine lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries to use the Li-ion Super-Phosphate (SLFP) chemistry which offers the highest levels of safety, performance and reliability. The approval process was based on simulated thermal runaway tests carried out on the Seanergy systems by an independent laboratory in August 2016.

Star Bulk, Eco Marine Power Commence Renewable Energy Study

As part of its continued focus on bringing renewable energy solutions to shipping, Eco Marine Power (EMP) has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Star Bulk S.A. (Star Bulk) covering a joint study project focused on the feasibility of using EMP’s technologies on existing and new bulk carriers. The joint study between Star Bulk and EMP will cover engineering issues related to how various equipment including solar panels, batteries and other devices can be installed on existing and new ships.

For Hire: Battery Hybrid PSVs

Systems integrator and equipment maker Rolls-Royce has quietly been adding hybridizing energy-storage packages to a diverse list of vessels. Yet, so, too, has one of its clients — Louisiana-based SEACOR Marine, as it reacts early to tightened emissions and energy-management standards, or EMS, for vessels plying Europe and North America. Fuel savings and energy-company clients seeking green credentials are, it turns out, just part of the upside driving battery retrofits.The fuel savings to be had for keeping thrusters on battery power are a powerful selling point, to be sure.
