New LR Guidance on Large Battery Installations

Lloyd's Register (LR) has released a new guidance document aimed at facilitating a risk-based approach to battery use. The guidance describes the key hazards to consider when installing battery technology, and gives an overview of our non-prescriptive approach to approval. The guidance also covers battery chemistry and industry standards. The guidance starts at the beginning of a battery system’s lifecycle when the cells are being manufactured, and goes on to consider how an installation affects or is affected by a vessel’s power system…

Electric Boat Powered by Aluminum-air Battery

Alcoa, clean technology company Phinergy and HEIG-VD University, today debuted a zero-emissions electric demo boat powered by an aluminum-air battery at Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Alcoa and Phinergy announced earlier this year that the companies are collaborating on new materials, processes and components to commercialize the aluminum-air battery for various applications, including electric cars, electric boats and stationary energy. A new stern trawler design from Wärtsilä aims to reduce fuel consumption and notably increase overall vessel efficiency. Powering the First Electric Commercial Fishing Boat

Corvus Energy announced a Corvus ESS with a Siemens BlueDrive PlusC marine propulsion system will power the Selfa Elmax 1099 electric fishing boat designed and built by Selfa Arctic AS. The 11 meter electric vessel will have a 195 kWh ESS consisting of 30 Corvus AT6500 lithium polymer battery modules. The fishing boat, designed to operate entirely on Corvus battery power over a planned 10-hour working day, will also have a small 50kW auxiliary generator and can be charged overnight by plugging into the electrical grid.

Scandlines Orders Ferry Battery System

Corvus Energy announced that that it will deliver an additional 2.6 MWh battery system to German-Danish passenger ferry company Scandlines – operators of the world’s largest battery hybrid electric ferry fleet. Scandlines’ fleet of battery hybrid ferries currently include: the M/V Deutschland, M/V Schleswig-Holstein, M/V Prins Richard and M/V Prinsesse Benedikte, with the M/V Copenhagen and M/V Berlin under construction. Each vessel has between 1.5 MWh and 2.6 MWh of energy storage.

Hybrid Energy Storage Solution Installed on Viking Princess

Wärtsilä said it completed the installation of a hybrid energy system on board offshore supply vessel (OSV) Viking Princess. The Norwegian vessel is now the first ever OSV in which batteries reduce the number of generators aboard the ship. The new energy storage solution will improve engine efficiency, generate fuel savings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Viking Princess completed sea trials and the system was handed over to customer Eidesvik Offshore on October 9, 2017.

FuelCell Energy Wins US Navy UUV Contract

FuelCell Energy Inc. awarded US$3.8-million contract by U.S. Navy to develop power system for unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV). FuelCell Energy, Inc., a leading manufacturer of fuel cell power plants, announce a US$3.8-million contract award from the U.S. Navy to develop and test a Hybrid Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC)-Battery power system for large displacement undersea vehicle propulsion. The objective of the project is to develop a refuelable power system, with high energy density, that is suitable for undertaking long duration underwater missions of unmanned submersibles.

Corvus Energy Names Hauso Executive VP

Corvus Energy has appointed Halvard “Hal” Hauso as executive vice president of sales and marketing. Imtech: Hybrid Propulsion System for Ferries

Imtech Marine won a contract to supply the hybrid propulsion system, consisting of diesel electric in combination with battery technology to the world’s first diesel electric, hybrid seagoing ferries. Owned by Scottish company Caledonian  Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL), the two vehicle and passenger RoRo ferries will be built by Ferguson Shipbuilders of Glasgow. The vessels will be powered by diesel generator sets, feeding power to a 400 Volt switchboard, which will  supply power to permanent magnet propulsion motors.

Ballerina's First Electric Ferry Enters Service

With around half a million plug-in electric cars are on the roads worldwide, electric propulsion is now slowly spreading into other types of transportation, one of which is electric boats. Stockholm ferry operator Ballerina has introduced a new, electrically propelled passenger ferry, built in composite material, that runs smoothly, comfortably and with essentially none of the noise that accompanies combustion-engined vessels. Silent, clean and cost-effective operations are key priorities for the marine transportation industry.

Saft to Supply Battery Systems for RRS Sir David Attenborough

Saft will supply two specialized Seanergy marine lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery systems to Rolls-Royce Marine for integration in the hybrid propulsion systems for the polar research vessel RRS Sir David Attenborough. The new vessel, one of the most advanced ever, is being commissioned by the U.K.’s Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) for operation by the British Antarctic Survey. The contract follows an earlier Rolls-Royce Marine contract for a hybrid multi-application vessel for Kystverket, the Norwegian Coastal Administration.

38% Fuel Savings for Hybrid Ferry

When Imtech Marine was asked to supply a hybrid propulsion system to the first ever diesel electric, hybrid seagoing ferries to the Scottish state-owned ferry operator, Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd. (CMAL) in 2011, fuel savings of around 20% were expected, the company said. Following extensive trials Imtech Marine announced that the actual fuel savings with the innovative hybrid system - consisting of diesel electric in combination with battery technology - were up to 38%. CMAL operates 30 ferries on the west coast of Scotland to 18 islands.

Corvus Energy Supply BMS to New Østensjø Rederi PSV

Corvus Energy supplies Norwegian ship owner Østensjø Rederi with turnkey lithium-ion battery management system (BMS) for newly designed vessel. The Platform Supply Vessel (PSV), designated ST-920, is being developed by Østensjø Rederi together with ship designer Skipsteknisk in Ålesund and building yard Astilleros Gondan in Spain in close collaboration with Siemens as the systems integrator and Corvus Energy as the energy storage system enabler. The new vessel will be used to support rig operations in the North Sea and construction is expected to complete in September 2013.

Saft Seanergy Energy Storage Systems Approved by NMA

Saft has obtained approval of its Seanergy marine energy storage system by the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) for use in a variety of hybrid and fully electric propulsion applications. Saft is the only manufacturer of marine lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries to use the Li-ion Super-Phosphate (SLFP) chemistry which offers the highest levels of safety, performance and reliability. The approval process was based on simulated thermal runaway tests carried out on the Seanergy systems by an independent laboratory in August 2016.
