Meyer Werft Orders More MAN Diesel & Turbo Power
MAN Diesel & Turbo has won the order from Meyer Werft for new cruise vessels for Norwegian Cruise Line to supply its V48/60CR engines with diesel-electric propulsion systems. The ships will be built at Meyer Werft, the cruise liner specialist builder in Papenburg, northern Germany. Norwegian is a longstanding customer of MAN Diesel & Turbo with almost its entire fleet powered by the 48/60 and 58/64 engine types. The new ships, accorded the project name Breakaway Plus, will be the largest in Norwegian’s fleet.
Nordic American Tankers Mull Expansion Plans
Nordic American Tankers Ltd. is considering expanding its fleet by ordering new vessels or buying second-hand. The company's Board of Directors has declared a dividend of $0.16 for the fourth quarter of 2012. They are assessing expansion plans including ordering of new vessels from shipyards or buying second hand vessels at historically low prices. The level of the declared dividend should be seen in the context of a planned fleet expansion. Expansion is essentially the same as investing in the future.
LNG Ship Glut Foreseen
The liquefied natural gas market may have a ship surplus in 2014 and 2015 as new vessels launch faster than production plants complete. There are 78 ships on order, amounting to 21 percent of the existing fleet, the Hamilton, Bermuda-based Hoegh LNG AS, owner of seven carriers, informs in its quarterly report as reported by Bloomberg Business News. While annual world output of the fuel, known as liquefaction, will be 330 million metric tons in 2017, from 242 million tons in 2011, some of the new ships will arrive before production expands, Hoegh's report stated. Northern Offshore receives Maersk Oil & Gas notification that rig 'Energy Endeavour' will be released from contract on May 1, 2013. The rig's accommodation unit does not meet new Danish Energy Authority requirements and its replacement is not commercially viable for either party. Gary W. Casswell, Northern Offshore's president and CEO, said, "We sincerely appreciate that Maersk have given us very early notice of release of the Energy Endeavour, as it will allow us approximately six months to re-contract the rig in a very tight market.
Nordic American Tankers Save Fuel
In a letter to shareholders Nordic American Tankers Limited Chairman & CEO pointed (amongst other things) to the fleet's fuel-saving measures. NAT has made, and is continuing to make, important investments on our existing fleet to reduce fuel consumption. Depending on the speed we use on a specific voyage, a Suezmax vessel consumes on average about 30 tons to 65 tons per day in ballast and laden condition, respectively. A few years ago, for example, the price of bunker fuel that we use to power our ships cost about $200 per ton. Today, the price is $600 to $700 per ton.
