Bureau Veritas congratulates owners Seaspan as their new emission reducing ferry enters service between the British Columbia mainland and Vancouver Island. Seaspan Swift is Seaspan Ferries Corporation’s (SFC) new dual-fuelled / hybrid - diesel, liquefied natural gas and battery powered ferry. The new ferry is the first hybrid LNG fuelled and battery powered vessel in service and the first LNG fuelled vessel operating on the west coast of Canada. Additionally, the on-board bunkering of LNG from a truck trailer is a first in North America.

Innovative Seaspan Ferry Enters Service

Seaspan Ferries Corporation’s (SFC) Seaspan Swift, a new hybrid LNG fueled and battery powered ferry, entered service between the British Columbia mainland and Vancouver Island. The innovative vessels is classed by Bureau Veritas, and it is reported to be the first hybrid LNG fuelled and battery powered vessel in service and the first LNG fuelled vessel operating on the west coast of Canada. Additionally, the on-board bunkering of LNG from a truck trailer is a first in North America. Designed by VARD Marine, the 148.9m vessel is the first of two to be built at Sedef Shipbuilding, Turkey.

Bureau Veritas Gains EU Maritime MRV Accreditation

Bureau Veritas has gained accreditation from United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS), in their pilot scheme, to carry out assessments and verifications for compliance with the European Union’s Maritime Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (EU MRV) regulation. The regulation, part of the EU’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, requires operators to monitor and report on CO2 emissions based on ship fuel consumption. It applies to all merchant ships of 5,000 GT or above on journeys that call at an EU port.

Bureau Veritas Launches Elastic Shaft Alignment Notation

Classification society Bureau Veritas has introduced a new set of requirements for shaft alignment on high powered ships. The ESA notation will help ensure the integrity of the structure and shaft bearings on very large vessels such as ultra-large container ships and the next generation of very large LNG carriers. Jean-Francois Segretain, deputy technical director, Bureau Veritas, said, “As ships grow in size and we seek more fuel economies we are now seeing vessels with shafts handling over 20MW of power driving large diameter propellers of over 30 tons weight.

WAAMpeller: World First Class-Approved 3D Printed Ship’s Propeller

A consortium of organizations are working toward a landmark achievement in the maritime sectors: creating the world's first class-approved 3D-printed ship's propeller. As many sectors of the shipbuilding industry suffer due to overcapacity, it is this type of innovative leap that will -- if successful -- separate the next generation of leaders in the sector. In the effort a cooperative consortium of Damen Shipyards Group, RAMLAB, Promarin, Autodesk and Bureau Veritas aim to develop the world’s first class approved 3D printed ship’s propeller, dubbed WAAMpeller.

Bureau Veritas Rules Support Hybrid Power and ESS

Bureau Veritas has issued a new chapter in its rules providing a framework for electric and hybrid power solutions. The new class notations include power management (PM), power back-up (PB) and zero emission (ZE) standards. It is expected that the notations will encourage wider uptake of energy storage systems (ESS) to provide both operational and environmental benefits. Bureau Veritas, Ascenz Partner on Ship Performance Monitoring

Bureau Veritas Awards GTT AIP for LNG Bunker Mast

Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) announced today that it has received approval in principle (AIP) from Bureau Veritas for its bunker mast design, REACH4, (Refueling Equipment Arm, Methane (CH4)). The use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel for all types of transport vessels is evolving, and with it comes the requirement for basic equipment to ensure safe and simple LNG bunkering. GTT has drawn on years of experience with LNG to create a bunker mast system called REACH4, designed to fit on the LNG bunker vessel, permitting a simple and safe transfer of LNG fuel to a client vessel.

3D Printed Ship’s Propeller Prototype Produced

A prototype of the world’s first class approved ship’s propeller manufactured using 3D printing techniques has been produced by a cooperative consortium of companies that includes Damen Shipyards Group, Rotterdam Additive Manufacturing LAB (RAMLAB), Promarin, Autodesk and Bureau Veritas. The 1,350mm diameter propeller – named WAAMpeller – was fabricated from a Nickel Aluminium Bronze (NAB) alloy at RAMLAB in the Port of Rotterdam. The propeller was produced with the Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) method using a Valk welding system and Autodesk software.

New Guidance: Reducing the Risk of Propulsion Loss

Bureau Veritas, TMC Marine and the London P&I Club have issued a new booklet providing operational guidance for preventing blackout and main engine failures. In a joint project, classification society Bureau Veritas and consultancy TMC Marine, a Bureau Veritas Group Company since 2016, have cooperated again with the London P&I Club to produce the second booklet in a series on loss prevention issues. The new publication focuses on the marine engineering issues and procedures related to loss of propulsion incidents and how to prevent them.

First Class Approved 3D Printed Ship’s Propeller Unveiled

The world’s first Class approved 3D printed ship’s propeller, the WAAMpeller, has been unveiled following rigorous testing verified by Bureau Veritas at Damen Shipyard Group’s headquarters in the Netherlands. The groundbreaking propeller is the result of collaboration between RAMLAB, Promarin, Autodesk, Bureau Veritas and Damen, who started pooling collective resources and knowledge to develop the world’s first 3D printed ship’s propeller seven months ago. Promarin provided the design of the triple-blade propeller.

CMA CGM’s Dual-fuel Mega Ships to be Built to BV Class

All nine of CMA CGM’s new gas-fueled Ultra Large Containerships will be built to Bureau Veritas (BV) class rules and under BV newbuilding supervision. The two China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) shipyards that will be building the nine 22,000 TEU containerships, Jiangnan Changxing Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Hudong Zhonghua) and Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry Co., Ltd (SWS), signed the classification contract with BV senior management at a ceremony during Marintec 2017 in Shanghai.

BV Classes First LNG-fuel Oil/Chemical Tanker

Leading international classification society Bureau Veritas has classed the first LNG-fuelled newbuilding oil/chemical tanker, the 15,000 dwt Ternsund, built under BV class at Avic Dingheng, China and delivered to Denmark’s Terntank Rederi at the end of June 2016. The new vessel is the result of close co-operation between Terntank, Avic and Bureau Veritas. The Ternsund is the first of a series of four ships all equipped with the Wärtsilä RT-flex50-D dual-fuel low-speed engine. This is the first installation of such engine and it was done under BV class.

First Ethane-powered Ships Classed by Bureau Veritas

The first ethane-powered ship, JS Ineos Insight, the leading ship in a series of eight 27,500-cubic-meter multi-gas Dragon-class vessels being built at Sinopacific, China, for Denmark’s Evergas, was named on July 14. The new vessels configured for transport of ethane, LPG or LNG, with options for ethane, LNG and conventional diesel power, will be classed by classification society Bureau Veritas. “The ability to burn ethane as well as LNG to power these unique vessels is a major step forward in the use of clean fuels.

Six Suezmax Tankers Earn BV Gas-Prepared Notation

International classification society Bureau Veritas is to grant GAS-PREPARED notation to six Suezmax tankers under construction for Dynacom Tankers Management. The 157,000 dwt tankers will measure 274.3 meters in length, with a beam of 48 meters and depth of 23.2 meters. They are being built at New Times Shipbuilding in China, with delivery expected in 2017 and 2018. The GAS-PREPARED notation sets out requirements for ships which are designed and fitted out for dual-fuel or LNG fuel propulsion, but which are not initially intended to use gas as a fuel.

BV to Class Largest Gas-fuelled Ro-pax Fleet

International classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) is to class a gas-fuelled major ro-ro passenger ferry newbuilding and oversee the conversion of three existing ro-pax ferries to LNG power for Brittany Ferries. New App Helps Ship Owners Comply with Fuel Regs

Bureau Veritas has introduced the first phase of My Fuel Consumption, a cloud-based and secure web application for desktop, mobile and tablet that aims to make compliance easy, with a digitized process throughout the various steps of IMO-DCS (declaration of fuel consumption) and EU MRV regulations (CO2 emissions).All ships of 5,000 GT and above must submit IMO-DCS plan to receive a confirmation of compliance, from their flag states or delegated Recognized Organizations (ROs) before January 1, 2019.
