A Containership Goes Green With Vesconite
When the stern tube bearing on the 490' x 75' container ship M/V Marine Rickmers began to fail, Durban, South Africa-based Elgin Brown & Hamer (EBH South Africa) replaced it with state-of-the-art, pollution-free Vesconite. The innovative self-lubricating polymer is far superior to oil-lubricated lignum vitae, white metal and composite bearings, especially with the implementation of ever more stringent environmental regulations.Vesconite doesn't swell in water and machines to +/-0.001", so tight tolerances are always ensured.
All Electric Pilot Boat Design Unveiled
Robert Allan Ltd. has developed a new all electric pilot boat for service involving short trips where the run to the ship is 5 nautical miles or less.An aluminum version of its steel predecessor, the RAlly 1600-E boasts a fully electric twin screw drivetrain and a substantial bank of high energy density batteries that are recharged from shore power. Twin small auxiliary generators give “get home” and range extension capability but are normally not running. The vessel runs quietly and emissions free and is capable of reaching speeds up to 20 knots.According to the designer…
New App Helps Ship Owners Comply with Fuel Regs
Bureau Veritas has introduced the first phase of My Fuel Consumption, a cloud-based and secure web application for desktop, mobile and tablet that aims to make compliance easy, with a digitized process throughout the various steps of IMO-DCS (declaration of fuel consumption) and EU MRV regulations (CO2 emissions). All ships of 5,000 GT and above must submit IMO-DCS plan to receive a confirmation of compliance, from their flag states or delegated Recognized Organizations (ROs) before January 1, 2019.
