Wärtsilä to Refit Canadian Coast Guard Icebreaker

Finland's Wärtsilä reports it has won a contract for the delivery and integration engineering of two retractable thrusters and a dynamic positioning (DP) system for the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) icebreaker CCGS Amundsen.Wärtsilä, which booked the order in July, said it was able to meet the CCG’s requirements to fit the equipment in the existing space of the 98-meter-long Arctic Class 3 Medium Icebreaker, the only vessel in its class to be fitted with retractable thrusters and DP. The new thrusters will be integrated with the existing bow thruster, which is also a Wärtsilä product.

CCG Provides Icebreaker Nod for Seathigor

MAN to Power Canada's Joint Support Ships

Canadian shipbuilder Seaspan Shipyards announced Tuesday it has awarded MAN Energy Solutions Canada of Vancouver, BC, a contract valued at $55 million ($41.2 million US) to provide propulsion and power generation components for Canada’s new Joint Support Ships (JSS).The contract was announced today but was awarded and signed late last year, a Seaspan Shipyards spokesperson confirmed to MarineLink.MAN will provide two MAN 12V32/44CR (Common Rail) propulsion engines equipped with environmental protection SCR technology…

Wärtsilä Modernizing Vessel for CCG

Wärtsilä will support the 1100 Class High Endurance Multitask Vessels operated by the Canadian Coast Guard, to renew their current propulsion generators. These vessels serve for buoy tending, search and rescue and icebreaking in each of the three Region of the Canadian Coast Guard. The new, more modern propulsion generators will contribute to the vessel's reliability for many years to come. Furthermore, the standards of engineering and fuel consumption for the new engines will lead to reduced operational costs and lower emissions.

Canadian Coast Guard Fleet Modernization Underway

ABB said it will modernize 10 out of 14 Medium Icebreakers and High Endurance Multi Task Canadian Coast Guard ships to extend operational life of the vessels by another 20 years. “For more than 75 years ABB has been working at the cutting edge of icebreaker technology and we are delighted to bring this expertise to these Canadian Coast Guard ships,” said Jyri Jusslin, Senior Vice President of ABB Global Marine & Ports Service. Design and work supply on first of the 10 vessels, CCGS Pierre Radisson, is already underway and will be completed in July 2017.

Thordon Bearings Bags ‘Build in Canada’ Award

The Government of Canada has signed a procurement agreement with Thordon Bearings for the supply, installation and commissioning of two SeaThigor shaft seals for the Canadian Coast Guard vessel CCGS Hudson. The product and service contract is through the Administration’s Build in Canada Innovation Program, introduced in 2010 to support and invest in home-grown innovations in order to facilitate sustainable economic growth across the country. ABB Breathes New Life into Canadian Icebreaker

ABB will modernize a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, installing the latest hardware and software onboard the 38 year old Pierre Radisson. As part of the complete upgrade to the ship’s power distribution system, eight new drives will also be installed. The contract includes the option to modernize the other two Coast Guard ships, Des Groseilliers and Amundsen, both of which have clocked up more than 30 years of service. By attaching sensors to onboard equipment, ABB’s expert engineers can help diagnose problems on the vessel from shore.

OpDAQ Systems Wins Canadian Coast Guard Contract

Rimouski-based company OpDAQ Systems has been awarded a contract to equip 34 Canadian Coast Guard vessels with fuel management marine systems. The embedded systems will provide onboard staff and managers with real-time data on fuel consumption, engine power and ship speed. This approach has advantages both economically and environmentally by facilitating continuous and measurable improvement of operations, according to the developer. Since its creation in 2008, OpDAQ Systems has exported its products to more than 24 countries through its network of distributors.

MTU Powers Ice-Capable Research Vessel

MTU, a Rolls-Royce brand, was chosen to power the Sikuliaq, a U.S. academic research vessel tailor-made for oceanographic research. The Sikuliaq, one of the most advanced university research vessels in the world, is owned by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and operated by the University of Alaska Fairbanks as a part of the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System’s academic research fleet. The Sikuliaq is powered by a total of four MTU Series 4000 Ironmen engines, two of which are MTU 16V 4000 M23S marine generator engines.

Vancouver Shipyards Get Government Contracts

Progress continues under Canada's National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy  (NSPS) with contracts to Vancouver Shipyards. STX to Design Canadian Icebreaker

STX Canada Marine Awarded Contract to Design the Canadian Coast Guard’s New Polar Icebreaker. STX Canada Marine is pleased to announce that they have been awarded the contract to design the new polar icebreaker for the Canadian Coast Guard. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans announced today the award on behalf of the Government of Canada. The work will be carried out at STX Canada Marine’s Vancouver office and be completed by the end of 2013. The polar icebreaker will be named after former Prime Minister John George Diefenbaker (CCGS John G. Diefenbaker).

One of Canada’s most storied naval architecture firms, Robert Allan Ltd., and Canada’s leading arctic and offshore engineering firm, Ausenco Sandwell, formed a joint venture -— Canada’s Arctic SAGE Team -— to bid for the design of  the Canadian Coast Guard’s new flagship icebreaker. “Canada’s Arctic SAGE Team brings together the most experienced, skilled and talented team in the world on ice breaker technology,” says Robert Allan Ltd.’s Executive Chairman, Rob Allan.
