New Scrubber Service Station at Portland Port
Intermarine UK struck an agreement with a Chinese manufacturer to make the Port of Portland one of the UK’s centers for scrubber installation.Intermarine President Slawomir Kalicki signed the agreement at Norshipping in Oslo with counterpart DB Wang deputy general manager of the Shandong Pure Ocean Technology based in Renhe Town in the Shandong province. The deal will see Intermarine act as an agent to Shandong and offer to install its scrubber systems to a wide variety of vessels to help them meet tough new environmental regulations.

Toyota Backs Japanese $1.8 Bln LNG Vessel Order
Japanese car manufacturer Toyota Motor Corporation is turning to LNG-powered ships to transport its cars across the globe, according to a report from Japanese daily Nikkei. The company has backed an investment in up to 20 LNG-powered car carriers with the capacity to carry 7,000 vehicles each, as it is preparing for the environmental regulations that will go into force in 2020. Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) and Toyota’s Toyofuji Shipping are expected to be in the running for the contract, which is estimated to be approximately $1.83 billion.
New Study Looks at LNG Bunkering for Car Carriers
To help promote liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering in Asia, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Ports and Harbors Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism of Japan (MLIT) will helm a working group to conduct a feasibility study on LNG bunkering for car carriers plying between Japan and Singapore. This working group will include Japan’s big three shippers – Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL).
BOS Rolls Out New Engine Performance Software
Blue Ocean Solutions (BOS) has introduced new Engine Performance Software designed to provide ship operators with a holistic insight into the operating condition and efficiency of the ship’s engine. The software verifies the fuel savings gained from BOS’ Emulsified Fuel System (EFS), and will be delivered as an add-on to the EFS at no additional cost. The software also evaluates the engine condition against factory test data and establishes current trending profile (patent pending) for preventive maintenance, restoring fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.
First Dual-fuel LNG Car Carrier Christened
United European Car Carriers (UECC), daughter company of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Wallenius Lines, signed a contract in 2014 for the construction of two dual fuel LNG Pure Car and Truck Carriers. The first vessel, de ms AUTO ECO, left the shipyard in China in September and arrived in November in Zeebrugge. On November 21, the ms AUTO ECO was christened at the terminal of International Car Operators (ICO) in the Zeebrugge inner port. The godmother of the ship is Claire Tillekaerts, CEO of Flanders Investment & Trade.
Volkswagen Opts for LNG-powered Shipping
The Volkswagen Group said it will use two vessels powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) on routes between Europe and North America from 2019, in a move that aims to improve the environmental balance of its marine transport fleet. “The Volkswagen Group is shouldering its responsibility for the environment. “By commissioning the two LNG-powered freighters for the route between Europe and North America, Volkswagen Group Logistics is forging ahead with environmentally compatible, resource-efficient transport,” Thomas said.

Alfa Laval reports its scrubber solution PureSOx has been the subject of many repeat orders. One of the major returning customers is the Grimaldi Group, which has now ordered its 10th installation of Alfa Laval’s exhaust gas cleaning system. Order Placed for First Gas-Powered Car Carriers
Dual-fuel ME-GI engine adds important reference to growing list. United European Car Carriers (UECC) has signed a contract for the construction of two LNG-powered Pure Car/Truck Carriers (PCTCs). A single MAN B&W 8S50ME-GI dual-fuel engine will power each newbuilding. The PCTCs will be capable of operating on LNG fuel, heavy fuel oil or marine gas oil, providing greater flexibility and efficiency. They represent the first such vessels globally to be fitted with an LNG propulsion system.
Ports Recognize MOL for Green Initiatives
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) today announced that the company has earned recognition from the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, California, for its efforts to ensure compliance with standards that call for vessels to slow down within 40 nautical miles (nm) of the shore. Hybrid Turbocharged Car Carrier Runs Sea Trials
The car carrier that mounts the world first Hybrid Turbocharger with Electric Assist function and Variable Turbine Inlet (VTI) ran its sea trial from April 17-22 and proved the world's first electric-assist turbocharger function on actual ship. The turbocharger was manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd. (MHI-MME). By using the electric-assist function, the ship will be able to save energy consumption substantially at slow steaming by reducing the amount of time of auxiliary blower operation.
Dalian to Produce and Sell Kappel Propellers in China
On August 30, 2013 MAN Diesel & Turbo signed an agreement regarding the production of its Kappel propeller portfolio with Dalian Marine Propeller Co., Ltd (DMMP) – part of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) Group – at its facility in Frederikshavn, Denmark. The deal allows DMMP to produce and sell MAN Alpha Kappel design propellers in China. MAN Diesel & Turbo subsequently announced that DMMP has signed a Kappel design propeller contract with Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co.
