New Concept Guides the Way to Emission-Free Cruises

The cruise industry is facing more stringent requirements and regulations to emissions. In partnership with leading cruise lines, Norwegian technology suppliers have now developed a concept for zero-emission cruising.The concept has been developed in cooperation with Eker Design, cruise giants Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, technology suppliers in the industry cluster NCE Maritime CleanTech and various interest organisations.Norwegian companies are world-leading in the development of maritime environmental technology.

ABB Propulsion for China-Built Cruise Ship

China’s first domestically built cruise ship, to be built at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. Scrubber Safe for Environment: Carnival

Carnival Corporation has released the results of an independent, two-year scientific scrubber wash-water study.The study shows the company’s advanced air quality systems (i.e. scrubbers) are in compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2020 requirements, which include regulations for cleaner air emissions and strict wash-water quality standards.The study also concluded that the wash-water samples from scrubbers were below the limits set by several major national and international water quality and land-based water discharge standards…

Princess Cruises Orders Two Record-setting Newbuilds

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri said it has signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Carnival Corporation brand Princess Cruises for the construction of two 175,000-ton cruise ships. ABB’s Azipods Ordered for 100th Cruise Ship

Azipod propulsion, the ABB technology that has become the industry standard in the cruise segment since its launch in 1990, has secured its 100th cruise ship order, winning a contract for powering the world’s first electric hybrid icebreaker. The luxury polar expedition cruise ship, due delivery for the French cruise company PONANT in 2021, will feature two Azipod VI propulsion units fit for the most challenging ice conditions. Upon delivery from Norway’s Vard Søviknes, a Fincantieri Company, the cruise ship will take passengers to unexplored destinations in Arctic and Antarctic waters.

Third LNG-powered Ship Ordered for AIDA Cruises

The number of liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered ships on order for AIDA Cruises has risen to three following the latest shipbuilding contract announced today by the German cruise line’s parent company Carnival Corporation & plc. Carnival said it signed a shipbuilding contract with German shipbuilder Meyer Werft GmbH to build another new 180,000-ton ship that will be fully powered at sea and in port by LNG. The vessel will be built at Meyer Werft’s Papenburg shipyard for delivery in 2023. By that time, more than half of AIDA Cruises’ ships will run fully or partially on LNG.

P&O Cruises Orders Second Ship at Meyer Werft

Carnival Corporation announced it has signed a shipbuilding contract for a second cruise ship for its P&O Cruises brand with German shipbuilder Meyer Werft GmbH that is scheduled to be delivered in 2022. Similar to a fellow P&O Cruises sister ship due for delivery in 2020, this second new vessel will be the largest cruise ship to be built specifically for the British market. It will be 180,000 gross tons and will accommodate approximately 5,200 guests (lower berths). Both new ships will be registered in the U.K.

Carnival, Shell Strike Deal to Fuel LNG Cruise Ships

The move toward LNG as fuel in the maritime sector received another boost when Carnival Cruise Line announced this morning the signing of an agreement with Shell NA LNG, LLC (Shell) for it to supply marine LNG to power North America’s first fully LNG-powered cruise ships. Shell will supply Carnival Cruise Line with fuel for its two new LNG-powered ships expected to launch in 2020 and 2022 and to be homeported in North America. The two ships will be fueled through Shell’s LNG Bunker Barge (LBB).
