P&O Cruises Orders Second Ship at Meyer Werft

Carnival Corporation announced it has signed a shipbuilding contract for a second cruise ship for its P&O Cruises brand with German shipbuilder Meyer Werft GmbH that is scheduled to be delivered in 2022. Similar to a fellow P&O Cruises sister ship due for delivery in 2020, this second new vessel will be the largest cruise ship to be built specifically for the British market. It will be 180,000 gross tons and will accommodate approximately 5,200 guests (lower berths). Both new ships will be registered in the U.K.

Meyer Werft Begins LNG Cruise Ship Build for AIDA

German shipbuilder Meyer Werft has laid the keel for AIDAnova, set to become the first cruise ship worldwide that will operate both at sea and in port fueled with liquefied natural gas (LNG). With AIDAnova’s first building block lowered into place on September 6, 2017, Carnival Corporation & plc officially marked the start of construction of seven fully LNG powered cruise ships due to be commissioned between 2018 and 2022 for four of its 10 cruise ship brands. GE to Upgrade P&O Cruises' Oceana

P&O Cruises, part of Carnival Corporation & PLC, has chosen GE’s Marine Solutions once again to provide upgrades on board its 77,499-ton cruise vessel Oceana. Formerly known as Ocean Princess, the cruise ship was built in 1998 and had GE’s Syconum 2 electronic controller on board. GE will now be responsible for replacing existing controllers with the new generation of power electronics controllers on the four propulsion drives. SMM: Green Power Ahead

The pressure on the industry is tremendous. On the one hand, the tough situation in the market forces shipping companies to keep the prices for their services at competitive levels, which mainly means they have to increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. On the other hand, ever stricter international standards require investments in environmental technologies. And customers also expect the companies to demonstrate sustainable management – that is why Green Propulsion is a major focus at SMM, an  international maritime trade fair, to be held in Hamburg from September 6-9 2016.

At SMM 2010 ‘Green’ Technologies Center Stage

Last month MR’s Henrik Segercrantz traveled to Hamburg for an exclusive preview of the SMM 2010 exhibition. The SMM international trade fair for shipbuilding, machinery and marine technology will take place in Hamburg, Germany, on 7-10 September. This year much focus will be on environment-friendly technologies and products. The supporting program for SMM 2010 will for the first time this year include the Global Maritime Environmental Congress (gmec), and the Offshore Dialogue, which will also look into maritime technologies for offshore mining and wind farms.
