Shipbuilding: Hurtigruten Hybrid Construction Forges Ahead

Norwegian company Hurtigruten, the world’s largest expedition cruise operator, is continuing to push the boundaries when it comes to green travel with its order for three hybrid-powered vessels nearing completion, the first ship being due for delivery in May 2019.Two of these revolutionary ships are currently under construction at the Kleven Yard in Ulsteinvik, Norway, the MS Roald Amundsen and its sister ship, the MS Fritjof Nansen, both of which are custom-designed to cope with some of the most extreme conditions seen on our planet, each having a specially-designed, ice-strengthened hull.

Mercury Introduces V-6 FourStroke Outboards

Mercury Marine has introduced its new V-6 FourStroke outboard family and the expansion of its SeaPro commercial line at the 2018 Miami International Boat Show. The new engine family, which builds on Mercury’s 75-150hp FourStroke outboards, features 175hp, 200hp and 225hp FourStroke outboards and a V-6 200hp SeaPro commercial outboard. The new Mercury FourStroke and SeaPro outboards are built on Mercury’s new 3.4-liter V-6 platform, which is designed to be powerful, light, compact and fuel-efficient. The new V-6 engines are precision engineered from skeg to cowl.

Volvo Penta Names Kelleher VP Customer Support, Training

Volvo Penta of the Americas announced the appointment of Tony Kelleher as vice president for customer support and training. Kelleher will be responsible to support both marine and industrial segments within the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Kelleher was previously director of the marine leisure segment with responsibility for OEM and dealer sales and partnership development for North America. He has also served as head of the service department and purchasing director within Volvo Penta of the Americas.

ZF Marine Opens New North America Commercial Craft Center of Competence

The new facility has dedicated transmission and thruster repair facilities, and larger warehouse and training areas. ZF Marine has a long standing presence in Louisiana, opening their first location in the city of St. Rose in 1996. The ever increasing customer base combined with the addition of the commercial thruster product line in 2009 resulted in the need to create a larger physical presence in the region. A comprehensive search of the region resulted in ZF finding a new home at 677 Time Saver Avenue in Elmwood, Louisiana.

Marine Jet Power Expands Sales and Service Network

Columbus, Ohio based provider of waterjet propulsion Marine Jet Power, Inc. (MJP) said it has entered a partnership with Simplex Americas LLC to serve as the newest sales and service provider in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The agreement names Simplex Americas as an authorized retailer and service provider for MJP’s water jets covering the U.S. coastal regions of Washington and Oregon. Simplex Americas represents the interests of Blohm + Voss Industries exclusively for Simplex, Simplan, Turbulo products in the U.S., Canada, Central America, Caribbean and the South American Pacific coast.

Volvo Penta Names Ljungström VP of Finance, CFO

Lars Ljungström has been appointed to vice president of finance and chief financial officer (CFO) for Volvo Penta of the Americas, effective July 2017. Ljungström will provide strategic leadership over finance, planning, budgeting and reporting for North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. He will also oversee coordination of IT systems and services, as well as legal and sales operations. Marine Jet Power Names Gibson Americas Sales Director

Marine Jet Power, Inc. (MJP) has hired Philip Gibson as Director of Sales, responsible for sales and business development efforts in North, South and Central America. Gibson brings to the role more than 30 years’ military maritime experience, having most recently served as a Regional Sales Manager for Brunswick Commercial & Government Products (Boston Whaler). He retired from the U.S. Navy in 2005 with the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer, where he served as a U.S. Navy SEAL and advisor to the international military and police forces for riverine and counter-drug operations.

Jens Bering has been appointed to the executive team of Volvo Penta of the Americas as vice president, marine sales, the company announced. Volvo Penta Expands N. America Training

Volvo Penta of the Americas informs it is expanding its service school offerings by partnering with vocational technical schools in the U.S. and Canada. Volvo Penta is now offering technical training classes at Georgian College in Barrie, Ont.; Oak Harbor Vocational School in Oak Harbor, Ohio; Lake Career & Technical Center in Camdenton, Mo.; and New England Institute of Technology in Providence, R.I.. Volvo Penta instructors will conduct the classes at the schools’ campuses for dealer and OEM service technicians, and also train the schools’ technical teachers to conduct future classes.

Volvo Penta Names Bjuve VP, Customer Support/Training

Volvo Penta of the Americas has appointed Martin Bjuve as vice president for customer support and training. In this position, he will provide strategic direction and management for support and product training for dealers and customers across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Bjuve has served as vice president and chief financial officer at Volvo Penta of the Americas since 2013. In addition to his responsibilities in the finance department, Bjuve has led key manufacturing investment projects in the Americas.

Kull Named President of Torqeedo Group

Marcia Kull has been named President of Torqeedo Group, Inc., and will direct global sales and strategy for the electric and hybrid marine propulsion systems manufacturer. Kull will oversee Torqeedo’s growth activities in the Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions. The newly created position is an expansion of the current management team. She will assume her new role on May 1, 2017. Kull joins Torqeedo from Volvo Penta of the Americas, where she was most recently Vice President, Marine Sales.

Fluid Mechanics Sails Into New Waters

Fluid Mechanics, a servicer of fuel injection systems for maritime diesel engines has now become part of L’Orange, the German leader in electronically-controlled, high-pressure injection technology for diesel and heavy fuel oil engines. Mercury Marine Ties-up with Supratechnic

Mercury Marine that it has entered in to an exclusive distribution agreement with Supratechnic Pte Ltd, one of the largest marine distributors in Asia, based out of Singapore. This partnership will allow Mercury to expand and build a regional distribution channel in Southeast Asia that will include all of Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei. "This new relationship will allow Mercury to further penetrate the commercial market in Asia, giving us the opportunity to grow both in product range and territorial expansion," said John Pfeifer, Mercury Marine president.

Volvo Penta Conducts Training for Dealer Network

Volvo Penta of the Americas conducted a custom training course in Cancun, Mexico recently, providing full instruction in the assembly, repair and alignment of IPS engines for its regional dealer network in Mexico and Central America. Seventeen technicians attended the series of five-day, Spanish-language classes held at Pirate Marine in Cancun. They received a full training on Volvo Penta’s IPS forward-facing propulsion system, along with EVC accessories and Vodia diagnostics for IPS.

ZF Marine Grows Presence in Louisiana

ZF Marine, the marine business unit of the global ZF Group, said it has secured a new location for its Gulf of Mexico/Inland Waterway sales and service operations. Service technicians from five countries just completed an in-depth two-week training class conducted by Volvo Penta of the Americas in Panama, as part of an ongoing program to expand and upgrade its marine dealer network in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Volvo Penta holds similar training schools for dealer technicians several times a year in the region. All the classes are conducted in Spanish and give practical hands-on instruction in diagnosis and repair of Volvo Penta marine engines and drives.
