Volvo Penta Supplies PPE to Healthcare Workers

Volvo Penta  is taking action in response to the prevalent need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). At two of its North American facilities, the company is producing and distributing this vital protective gear to healthcare workers in the local communities and beyond. The efforts are part of an ongoing initiative from Volvo Group North America which plans to supply thousands of PPE units to healthcare operations across the country.The Volvo Penta engineering team at the company’s U.S. headquarters office in Chesapeake, Va., has led development of medical face shields.

Research Vessel Repowered with Volvo Penta Diesel Sterndrives

When the Panama-based Smithsonian Tropical Research Institution (STRI) decided to repower their 11-year-old launch Morpho, as good scientists the team researched the alternatives thoroughly before selecting a triple Volvo Penta diesel sterndrive rig for the boat. Constructed in 2005, the 48-ft. Morpho makes daily runs for scientists and visitors between the STRI laboratory facility in Gamboa and the Barro Colorado Island nature sanctuary in the Panama Canal waterway. The boat was recently repowered with three Volvo Penta D6 330-horsepower diesel Aquamatic engines with DPH Duoprop drives.

US Navy: Bigger is Better, but at What Cost?

The U.S. Navy has a balanced fleet, but it wants to grow bigger and better. Will the budget allow both? Maritime Reporter's March 2017 cover story on the U.S. Navy was all about the numbers. There exists several plans to grow the fleet beyond the current number of 308 ships, the Mitre recommendation of 414 ships, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment 340-ship proposal, and the Navy’s decision to grow the fleet to 355 ships, and the Trump administration’s 350. With so many numbers being bandied about, there are even more suggestions on how to get there.

All-electric Paddlewheeler Tours Texas Lake

Winding its way through downtown Austin, Texas, is scenic Lady Bird Lake, a gas-restricted reservoir of the Colorado River. Lone Star Riverboat Cruises guides visitors through the picturesque surroundings in Lone Star, a 75-foot double-decked paddlewheel, powered by twin Torqeedo 40-horsepower Deep Blue outboards. Capt. Mike Pearce began Lone Star Riverboat Cruises with a diesel-powered paddleboat and an exemption to operate a fueled vessel on the lake. When the boat became too old to use, Pearce went all-electric. As his business grew, so did his fleet.

NAMJet Wins Huge US Army Bridge Boat Propulsion Contract

Marine waterjet manufacturer NAMJet says it has been contracted to provide propulsion systems for Birdon America's US Army Bridge Erection Boat (BEB) 400-boat replacement platform. At the same time NAMJet announces its manufacturing and operational HQ has moved to Denver, Colorado. Bridge Erection Boats are primarily used to provide propulsion and maneuverable thrust to support temporary floating bridges often made necessary when existing bridge crossings have been destroyed in military conflict.
