When it comes to the EPA’s recent proposed delay to implementation of Tier 4 marine diesel engines ‘in certain high-speed commercial vessels,’ where you stand probably depends on where you sit.On September 6, the U.S. Environmental Protection agency (EPA) proposed to delay implementation of Tier 4 marine diesel engines “in certain high-speed commercial vessels.” Specifically; EPA mentions three kinds of vessels: lobster boats, pilot boats and a third, more open-ended reference to “other high-speed vessels,” possibly including hovercraft.
WinGD Intros New Short-Stroke Engines
Switzerland-headquartered developer of low-speed gas and diesel engines for marine propulsion Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd (WinGD) has launched four new short-stroke engines to address economic engine speeds and accommodate space constraints on several vessel types.The engine designer said in a press note that the range, starting with the X52-S2.0 and X62-S2.0 and their dual-fuel counterparts X52DF-S1.0 and X62DF-S1.0, feature a short piston stroke that is ideal for vessels with a shallow draught, small propeller diameter or low main deck height.
Clean Marine Secures Multi-Vessel EGCS Contract
Clean Marine, developer of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS), has secured a multi-vessel contract from Inventor Chemical Tankers AS (ICT). The agreement, covering seven 19,900 DWT chemical tankers, marks the launch of the firm’s CleanSOx Compact Hybrid Allstream scrubber to the marketplace. Wärtsilä Re-gasification system for Norwegian Ship Conversion
Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply the re-gasification system for an FSRU (Floating, Storage, Re-gasification Unit) conversion project that Höegh LNG plans to carry out on a modern LNG vessel. The contract was signed in August. The Wärtsilä re-gasification system to be supplied will feature regas technology using water glycol as the intermediate medium instead of propane. This provides a more compact solution being some 15 percent smaller and lighter than the propane based system.
Wärtsilä Propulsion Solution for 3 Tugs
Three large new escort tugs contracted by Norwegian operator Østensjø Rederi, will feature Wärtsilä dual-fuel (DF) engines integrated with a customized gas storage and supply system also supplied by Wärtsilä. The tugs will operate primarily on LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) but the Wärtsilä DF engines provide the flexibility to select the most suitable fuel according to availability, price and local environmental restrictions. The contract for the Wärtsilä solution was signed in December 2014.
