Seaspan Ferries to Run Its Vessels on Renewable Natural Gas

This week, Seaspan Ferries Corporation became the first Canadian marine company to pilot the use of renewable natural gas (RNG) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced by its roll-on, roll-off liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered marine fleet. The M/S Texelstroom is more energy efficient, cleaner and more sustainable than her predecessors. CNG-electric hybrid ferry Texelstroom features some of the latest technological developments and innovation, such as a T-shaped beam which ensures a 14 percent car capacity improvement and a CNG/Diesel Hybrid propulsion which make the ship more cost-efficient and thus more environmentally friendly, says C-Job Naval Architects, who is responsible for the vessel’s complete initial, concept and basic design. Other innovations include solar panels, peak shaving batteries and heat recovery.

Hybrid RoPax Ferry Delivered to Royal TESO

Hybrid RoPax ferry Texelstroom has been delivered to Koninklijke N.V. Texels Eigen Stoomboot Onderneming (Royal TESO). This latest generation symmetrical ferry is powered by efficient, medium speed dual fuel engines of Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC). Texelstroom will be responsible for transporting up to 1,750 passengers and 350 vehicles between the port of Den Helder and the island of Texel. Royal TESO announced on May 8, 2014 that it had signed an agreement with the northern Spanish shipyard LaNaval for the construction of a new ferry.

ABS Issues LNG Bunkering Advisory

Report explores the benefits and challenges of natural gas power from the perspective of fuel providers and operators. Classification society ABS published a new Advisory about LNG Bunkering in response to the industry's growing interest in gas propulsion, LNG Bunkering: Technical and Operational Advisory, exploring the benefits, challenges and solutions associated with fuelling vessels equipped with LNG power systems. The second edition of ABS' Bunkering of Liquefied Natural Gas-fueled Marine Vessels in North America was released today, offering new market-leading advice to shipowners and operators who may be looking to develop bunkering infrastructure in response to new emissions regulations and showcase their environmental stewardship.

Wärtsilä's Propulsion For First CNG Carrier

The world's first ever carrier vessel for compressed natural gas (CNG) is to be powered by an integrated Wärtsilä propulsion system, chosen for its energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The vessel is being built at the Jiangsu Hantong shipyard in China ordered by CIMC ENRIC and designed by CIMC ORIC for end user Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), the Indonesian state owned energy company. The order with Wärtsilä was placed during the fourth quarter, 2014. The new vessel will feature a 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel main engine operating primarily on gas.

Cat to Power Ferries for 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro

Caterpillar Marine and Cat Dealer Pon Power announced the first Cat 3512C marine generator sets with Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) have been selected to power Assessoria Transporte Aquaviaro fast ferries for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 28 Cat generator sets will be installed on seven aluminum-hull fast ferries, with 14x Cat 3512 generator sets and 14x Cat 9 generator sets providing prime and auxiliary power. Each 3512 generator set will provide 1,550 eKW at 60 Hz of rated power.

MARAD Evaluates Natural Gas v. Conventional Fuel Emissions

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) informs it has released a study that evaluates total fuel cycle emissions for natural gas versus conventional marine fuels. This study was conducted as a part of MARAD’s Maritime Environmental & Technology Assistance program, which focuses efforts on emerging marine transportation and environmental issues. Results of the study showed that the use of natural gas as a propulsion fuel can reduce air quality pollutants and reduce major greenhouse gas emissions when compared to conventional fuels.

PetroChina Reviews Push for Transport LNG

China's biggest energy firm PetroChina is reviewing its multi-billion-dollar push to produce liquefied natural gas (LNG) to fuel trucks and ships in place of diesel, shutting two major gas liquefaction plants, sources said. Seen just a year ago as a fast-growing profit engine, PetroChina unit Kunlun Energy Co Ltd is now reconsidering its investment in the niche business after being wrongfooted by rising costs and China's slower economic growth, two sources with direct knowledge of the situation said.

Damen Shipyards of the Netherlands, German engine manufacturer MTU Friedrichshafen, a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, and Denmark’s SVITZER have embarked on the pioneering project with the official launch of the new eco-friendly tug planned for 2016. Major Conference Marks Helios Final Phase

A major international conference on November 27 in Copenhagen marked the final phase of the EU-funded Helios project. Helios is a cooperation research project within the EU´s seventh Framework Program for Research and Technical Development/Transportation with MAN Diesel & Turbo acting as coordinating partner. The general objective of the project is to develop a research platform for an electronically controlled, two-stroke, low-speed, marine diesel engine that operates on the principle of the direct injection of HP Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to meet the needs of the emerging LNG market.

Mitsubishi: Innovation on Using LNG as Fuel

Tokyo - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) has developed Japan's first system for supplying high-pressure gas which will enable use of natural gas as fuel for marine engines. The company agreed with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. (MES) for delivery of the first unit. The use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel achievable with the new system will enable reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, compared with use of heavy oil fuel, thus contributing to reduced environmental burdens.
