Salona Yachts Enters Green Zone

New Eco-friendly Expedition Cruise Ship in the Works

Rolls-Royce said it has signed a deal with WestSea Yard, part of Martifer Group, to equip an expeditionary oceanic cruise ship for Portuguese based cruise company Mystic Cruises. The vessel, to be called the MS World Explorer, will be the company’s first expeditionary oceanic cruise ship. The MS World Explorer will offer expeditionary cruise itineraries in Antarctica from November to March and this new vessel’s inaugural Antarctic season is already fully chartered to, and being distributed globally by, Polar Cruise Company Quark Expeditions.

Wärtsilä Wins Contract for New CLdN RoRos

Wärtsilä said it has been awarded a contract to supply controllable pitch propellers and power take off / power take home (PTO/PTH) shaft generator systems for two new RoRo vessels being built at the Uljanik shipyard in Croatia. The ships have been ordered by the Luxembourg based operator, CLdN Ro-Ro SA. There is an option for an additional two vessels. Wärtsilä, which booked its orders in December 2016 and February 2017, will supply the vessels with its latest design, WCP G-hub, optimized for high power density.

Croatia Shipyard Delivers Powerful Dredger

Uljanik Shipyard delivers the 26,000 dwt trailing suction hopper dredger 'Bartolomeu Dias' to Luxembourg's Jan De Nul S.A. This is the second such dredger constructed at the yard, with a LOA of 147.6 m and breadth of 30 m. The ship and the working equipment aboard Bartolomeu are powered by two main diesel engines, each having a power of 7200 kW, while the depth from which the material can be sucked lies in the 42-50 meter range. The dredger pump is driven by a two-coil electromotor of power 8 MW and controlled by two independent frequency converters.

Good Lookout LNG Carrier Saves Lives

NYK LNG carrier 'Lusail' rescues fishermen from the sea off the coast of Sri Lanka. Lusail was sailing from Ras Laffan, Qatar, to Yungan, Taiwan, when a crewman on deck spotted two fishermen in in the sea. The captain immediately directed the crew to initiate a rescue and even though visibility was poor because of heavy rain, the first fisherman was pulled from the water 30 minutes later. Later a second fisherman was safety taken from the water by another vessel that had responded to Lusail’s call for assistance in the rescue.

Marinvest Undertakes Second NSR Passage

On the 15th of August M/T Marilee LR1 Ice Class 1A, successfully completed her first Northern Sea Route Passage, safely escorted by Rosatomflot's nuclear ice breaker Vaigach. The savings compared to a voyage through Suez were 18 days and 580 tons of bunker resulting in a significant cost benefit for the Charterer and reduced emissions. The M/T Mariann, sister vessel to Marilee, embarked mid September as the second vessel under Marinvest management, on her NSR passage for discharge in the Far East.

Jumbo Orders Another Heavy Lift Ship

An agreement has been signed with the Brodosplit shipyard in Split, Croatia, for the construction of a top segment heavy lift vessel. The new vessel will have a length of 152.6 m and a beam of 27.4 m and is equipped with 2x 1,100 mt cranes (at 27.5m outreach). In tandem the cranes can lift up to 2,200 mt. This makes it the one of thge strongest heavy lift vessel in the world. To be able to work in Arctic regions, the vessel is to be built under ice class. For offshore operations the vessel will be prepared for future DP2 installation.Estimated delivery date of the new vessel is March 2013.

Wärtsilä Tests New Two-Stroke Dual-Fuel Gas Engine

Wärtsilä has tested its new low-speed gas engine technology in trials conducted at the company's facilities in Trieste, Italy. The tests were carried out on September 19 in conjunction with Wärtsilä's Licensees Conference in Trieste. Wärtsilä successfully demonstrated that the engine performance fully complies with the upcoming IMO Tier III nitrogen oxide (NOx) limits, thereby setting a new benchmark for low-speed engines running on gas. The new RTX5 2-stroke test engine is part of Wärtsilä's 2-stroke dual-fuel gas engine technology development programme.
