Shipbuilding: Hurtigruten Hybrid Construction Forges Ahead

Norwegian company Hurtigruten, the world’s largest expedition cruise operator, is continuing to push the boundaries when it comes to green travel with its order for three hybrid-powered vessels nearing completion, the first ship being due for delivery in May 2019.Two of these revolutionary ships are currently under construction at the Kleven Yard in Ulsteinvik, Norway, the MS Roald Amundsen and its sister ship, the MS Fritjof Nansen, both of which are custom-designed to cope with some of the most extreme conditions seen on our planet, each having a specially-designed, ice-strengthened hull.

Rotten Fish to Help Power Hurtigruten Cruise Ships

ABB Azipod Propulsion for Carnival’s New Ships

Power and automation technology group ABB announced it has won a repeat order worth $60 million to deliver complete electrical power plants and Azipod XO fuel-saving electric propulsion systems for Carnival Corporation’s two new cruise vessels. The order, which was booked in the second quarter of 2015, will also see ABB deliver generators, main switchboards, a remote control system and distribution transformers. The ships, to be built by Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, will sail under Carnival Corporation’s brands Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Line.

ABB to Equip Entire AIDA Fleet with SEEMP

ABB will deliver energy monitoring and management system EMMA to German-based cruise operator AIDA’s entire fleet consisting of 10 vessels. The EMMA advisory suite, already installed on six of AIDA’s cruise ships, is a decision-support tool to minimize the overall energy costs for individual vessels and entire fleets. Cruise Shipping: RCL's 'Quantum of the Seas' Delivered

MEYER WERFT delivered the 167,800-gt cruise ship Quantum of the Seas to the U.S. cruise operator Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. yesterday in Bremerhaven. According to the builder, the first ship of the Quantum class sets new standards in terms of eco-friendliness, featuring highly energy-efficient systems, optimized hydrodynamics, heat recovery, an effective underwater paint coating, a state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment plant (hybrid scrubber) as well as energy-saving LED lighting systems. The ship can accommodate 4,180 guests in 2,090 cabins, and is staffed by a crew of approximately 1,550.

New Carnival Cruise Ship to be Powered by MAN Diesel & Turbo

MAN Diesel & Turbo has won an order from Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines to supply five medium-speed 48/60CR engines to power its next-generation diesel-electric propulsion cruise liner which is to be built by Fincantieri. With a gross tonnage of about 133,500 tons and a passenger capacity of about 5,000, the ship will be the largest vessel in the Carnival Cruise Lines' fleet. Its construction represents the introduction of a brand new class of ship that will be powered by five MAN Tier-II-type engines – 2 × 14V48/60CR + 3 × 8L48/60CR types – capable of delivering 62,400 kW.

Experts state in a leaked pre-trial report that the cruise giant failed to act in 'Costa Concordia' accident. Europe’s biggest cruise operator Costa Crociere may have failed to act promptly in the Costa Concordia disaster, according to a pre-trial report that still heaped much of the blame on the ship’s captain.
