Cox Powertrain Appoints Asian Distributor

British diesel outboard manufacturer Cox Powertrain has signed an agreement with SoungJin Marine Co. Ltd. to act as distributor for its 300hp diesel outboard engine in South Korea.SoungJin Marine Co. Ltd has over 30 years‘ in distributing outboard motors and boat accessories. The South Korean company is the first Asian distributor to be confirmed by Cox Powertrain."We are delighted to have secured the contract and becoming the first Asian distributor for the most innovative diesel outboard engine in the world," said SoungJin Marine Co.

Tug, Switcher Engine Upgrades Offer Most Cost-Effective Options

Clean diesel technology upgrades for large tug and switcher locomotive engines cost only $4,379 to $15,201 per ton of nitrogen oxides (NOx), compared to more than $30,000 per ton of NOx for many other diesel emission reduction projects. The Diesel Technology Forum (DTF) and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) has released a report documenting the significant emission reduction benefits that can be gained by replacing older engines in tug boats and switcher locomotives with the latest clean diesel models.

Wärtsilä Donates Engine to MSU-Northern

Corporate officials from Wärtsilä North America were on the campus of Montana State University-Northern in October to look over their recent engine donation and to tour the new Diesel Technology Center, which is currently under construction. The donated 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 200 high-speed diesel engine and related tools from Wärtsilä are valued at $1.1 million and will be used in Northern’s “Big Bore Lab” in the university’s future Diesel Technology Center. The donation will help to expand the already existing partnership between the two organizations.

Volvo Penta Powers Chicago Sightseeing Boat

The newest addition to the Shoreline Sightseeing fleet in Chicago is powered by a pair of D13 400 hp Volvo Penta engines. MV Skyview is Shoreline’s first vessel with Volvo Penta engines, and according to Captain Chris LeBlanc, senior captain and Shoreline manager, Skyview is burning less than three gallons per hour for both engines during sightseeing tours. Other comparable boats in the fleet consume more than 10 gph. LeBlanc said the boat is smoother to run, easier to control and provides excellent torque, even at low RPMs, for docking and maneuvering in the narrow Chicago River.

First ME-LGI Engine Test Deemed a Success

MAN Diesel & Turbo licensee Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) recently demonstrated the liquid-gas-injection concept in Japan on 17 June, 2015 using the very first ME-LGI engine to ever be commercially produced. The engine, with the type designation 7S50ME-B9.3-LGI, is bound for a vessel currently under construction by Minaminippon Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. for Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. Ole Grøne, Senior Vice President – Low Speed Promotion & Sales – MAN Diesel & Turbo described the event as a significant milestone in the development of Diesel technology.

New TOTE Containership Receives MAN Turbochargers

The 3,100-teu container ship ordered by American marine transportation company TOTE, will be powered by an all-MAN package including main engine, auxiliary engines and turbochargers
. The recent delivery of the world’s first dual-fuel, low-speed ME-GI engine from Doosan Engine to National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) has set a new, historical milestone in engine technology, say MAN Diesel & Turbo. The 8L70ME-C8.2-GI main engine is aspirated by 2 × TCA66 turbochargers and in addition the ship will receive 3 × 9L28/32DF auxiliary engines, each featuring a single TCR18 turbocharger.

Cummins QSC8.3 EPA Tier 3 Marine Engine Now Available

Boat builders will be able to deliver the latest clean-diesel technology with no additional engineering, say the engine manufacturers. The new certification is met with in-cylinder combustion optimization requiring no additional emissions hardware. The engine model QSC8.3 joins the QSB6.7, released last year, and the QSL9 and QSM11, which will be available later this year, to round out Cummins complete lineup of

EPA Report Highlights Benefits of Emissions Reduction Program

More than 50,000 older diesel powered engines were upgraded or replaced between 2008 to 2010 because of Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) funding which resulted in major clean air benefits and fuel savings, according a new report issued today - the “Second Report to Congress: Highlights of the Diesel Emissions Reduction Program” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. “The results outlined in this report demonstrate that the clean diesel retrofit program (DERA) is one the nation’s rarest and best examples of a program that actually works…

3rd CIMAC CASCADES: Seminar for Younger Engineers

The third staging of the CIMAC CASCADES seminar for younger engineers and students took place at the ETH Swiss Institute of Technology in Zürich, Switzerland on June 8, 2012. Organized by the CIMAC National Member Association (NMA) in Switzerland, the Division Combustion Engines of the Swiss Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Industries (Swissmem), the event was considered a considerable success by all attendees. In what may become the standard framework for a CASCADES event, the seminar itself was preceded on 7th June 2012 by a visit to a member company’s facility.
