SPARTACUS: World’s Largest Cutter Suction Dredger Launched

On November 10, Royal IHC successfully launched the Spartacus, a 44,180kW self-propelled cutter suction dredger (CSD) designed and built for DEME. The ceremony took place at IHC's shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands. It was performed by Mrs Fabienne Ackermans, the spouse of Mr Luc Bertrand (chairman of the Board of Directors of Ackermans & van Haaren, owner of DEME).Spartacus is reportedly the world’s largest CSD and the first to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The four main engines can run on LNG, marine diesel oil (MDO) and heavy fuel oil (HFO).

Wärtsilä 34DF Engine Awarded EPA Tier III Certification

Wärtsilä marks another milestone for its Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engine.The 34DF engine has been awarded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Tier III certification for diesel mode operation when installed together with the Wärtsilä NOx Reducer (NOR) system, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system that converts nitrogen oxides (NOx) with the aid of a catalyst into diatomic nitrogen (N2) and water.Wärtsilä said it is the first engine manufacturer to be awarded…

WinGD Celebrates Milestone Order for 100th X-DF Engine

Only five years after the launch of the X-DF engine, WinGD has announced they have secured an order for their 100th X-DF engine. The award-winning technology developed by WinGD has demonstrated, on tests and engines currently in operation, that it offers stable combustion, inherently low NOx and greenhouse gas emissions and high overall system efficiencies as well as reliable and safe gas operation. GasLog LTD, one of the early supporters of the X-DF technology, has eight LNG carriers, each with 2x 5X72DF main engines in its fleet with three new builds recently entering commercial operations.

PSA Marine Orders LNG-fueled Harbor Tug

Wärtsilä said it has been contracted to design and equip one of PSA Marine (Pte) Ltd's newest harbor tugs. Operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel and incorporating fuel efficiency features, the harbor tug, which will be built by PaxOcean Shipyard, will be aligned with the maritime industry’s increasing emphasis on environmental impact. The order with Wärtsilä, booked in March 2018.The 28-meter long, 50-metric-ton bollard pull harbor tug will operate with two Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel engines running primarily on LNG fuel.

Dorian LPG to Repower Up to 10 VLGCs

Ship owner Dorian LPG Ltd. said it will look to upgrade the main engines of up to 10 of its very large gas carriers (VLGCs) to dual fuel technology utilizing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as fuel.The ship owner has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with marine service provider Hyundai Global Service Co., Ltd (HGS) to undertake research and preliminary engineering studies for the project.The initiative follows the conclusion of a study announced in September 2017…

Engines Selected for CMA CGM’s LNG Mega Ships

WinGD X-DF engines will power CMA CGM’s record setting containerships. French shipping line CMA CGM has chosen WinGD’s largest, 92 cm bore, dual-fuel low-speed engine to power its series of groundbreaking box ships – presently the largest on order globally, and the first ultra large container vessels with capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG). The series of nine ultra-large 22,000 TEU capacity containerships will be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd.

Wärtsilä Dual-fuel Engines for LNG Carrier Newbuilds

Wärtsilä, through its joint venture company CSSC Wärtsilä Engine (Shanghai) Co (CWEC), has been contracted to deliver 16 engines for four new LNG carrier vessels being built at the Hudong Zhonghua shipyard in China. The order was booked in August 2017. Each of the four 174,000 m3 capacity vessels will be fitted with four Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel generating sets running primarily on LNG fuel to provide the ships with auxiliary power. Their total power output will be 56 MW. Among the reasons given for the Wärtsilä 34DF engine being chosen for these ships were its proven reliability…

Germany Orders LNG Fueled Research Ship

The Fassmer shipyard in Germany is currently cinstructing a new research vessel to be owned by Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH), the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. The new 75-meter-long ship, the Atair, will replace her 30 year old namesake, and will be the first German research vessel operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel. The engines for the new vessel will be supplied by Wärtsilä, who will also supply exhaust cleaning systems based on selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and the LNGPac system for complete fuel gas handling.

ABS Grants AIP for LNG-fueled Design Concept

ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for the Seatransporter-DF, a dual-fuel design concept developed by Algoship Designers Ltd. of Nassau, Bahamas. The design has the capability to accommodate multiple engine types as well as Type-C or membrane containment systems for liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel. “Technically innovative designs that advance the use of LNG as fuel will play an increasingly important role in the marine sector, and ABS is working alongside industry to enable this critical technological advancement,” said ABS Executive Vice President for Global Marine, Dr. Kirsi Tikka.

Wärtsilä to Power Mediterranean's First LNG Ferry

Wärtsilä said it has signed a contract with Construcciones Navales del Norte SL (LaNaval) shipyard in Sestao, Spain for the design and supply of the LNG power and propulsion installation for a new RoRo passenger ferry being built for Spanish owner Baleària, an operator serving the Balearic Islands. There is also an option for a second vessel. The contract, signed in August 2016, will also see Wärtsilä provide inclusive project support services to the yard, including integration engineering and on-site consulting, as well as commissioning of the combined systems.

Maiden voyage of Wartsila LNG Powered Vessel

The first ever newbuild liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuelled German seagoing vessel, which is powered by a complete Wärtsilä LNG propulsion solution, had its maiden voyage on December 11. The ship has been built at the Fr. Fassmer shipyard in Germany. The passenger ferry, owned by Reederei Cassen Eils GmbH, will operate between Cuxhaven and the island of Helgoland. This route takes the vessel close to the UNESCO World Heritage listed Wadden Sea National Park, an ecologically sensitive area in the south-eastern part of the North Sea.

World-First, Dual-Fuel Container Ship Conversion

Wessels Reederei, the German shipping company, has signed a contract with MAN Diesel & Turbo at the Europort exhibition for maritime technology to retrofit the 8L48/60B main engine of its 1,000-teu container ship ‘Wes Amelie’ to dual-fuel operation. The vessel will be the first of its kind worldwide to be converted to an LNG-capable propulsion system. Through running on LNG, the Wes Amelie will drastically reduce emissions of sulphur oxide by over 99%, nitrogen oxide by approximately 90%, and carbon dioxide by up to 20%. Dr.

A specialized LNG Bunker vessel to be built at the STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Company yard in South Korea on behalf of Shell will be powered by Wärtsilä DF dual-fuel engines. The ship will be used to deliver gas to LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) fuelled vessels in Northwest Europe. The newbuild contract is in direct response to the increasing acceptance by the shipping industry of LNG as a marine fuel. The engine order was placed with Wärtsilä in December 2014. Wärtsilä has been at the forefront of the trend towards LNG fuelled shipping.

High Tech Towboat: LNG-Powered Design Gets ABS Approval in Principle

Conrad Shipyard and The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) said that its design of a 4,200 horsepower LNG-powered towboat received “Approval in Principle” (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The boat is based on TSGI’s azimuth drive (Z-drive) towboat design that debuted in 2008 as the FRANK T. STEGBAUER. To date, eight of these towboats have been built for Southern Towing Company, which is a pioneer in the use of z-drives for brown water operations. The boats have shown significant fuel savings relative to conventional towboats.

Wärtsilä, Diesel United Renew Pact

Wärtsilä and Diesel United Ltd in Japan have signed a ten-year renewal of their co-operation agreement for the sale, manufacturing and servicing of Wärtsilä low-speed marine engines. Diesel United is a long-standing member of the Wärtsilä family of low-speed engine licensees. The renewal was signed on the 66th anniversary of the signing of the licence by Diesel United for Sulzer low-speed marine engines on 4 October 1948. This has been Diesel United's sole licence for low-speed two-stroke diesel engines throughout the years since then.

Wärtsilä D-F Engines for Two New LNG Carriers

Wärtsilä inform that two new large, 180,000 CBM LNG carriers being built by the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in Korea on behalf of a collaboration between SK Shipping and Marubeni, are to be powered by 6-cylinder Wärtsilä X62DF 2-stroke dual-fuel engines. This is a milestone order for Wärtsilä’s marine sector as these will be the first large LNG carriers featuring the company’s 2-stroke dual-fuel technology. Wärtsilä has already supplied more than 150 ships with its 4-stroke, low pressure dual fuel engines. The 2-stroke development was introduced in November 2013.
