First Methanol-powered Tankers Due for Delivery
Starting in April, Waterfront Shipping Company Ltd. (WFS), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), Westfal-Larsen Management (WL), and Marinvest/Skagerack Invest (Marinvest) will welcome innovative, clean-burning, fuel-efficient vessels to the sea. These seven 50,000 dead weight tonne vessels are built with the first-of-its kind MAN B&W ME-LGI 2-stroke dual fuel engines that can run on methanol, fuel oil, marine diesel oil, or gas oil. This ship technology will significantly reduce emissions while giving ship owners a viable, efficient and convenient fuel alternative.
Parker Kittiwake Launches ATR Analyzer
Parker Kittiwake launched the Parker Kittiwake Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) analyzer, which the company says represents a breakthrough for the simultaneous testing of base number (BN), total acid number (TAN), insolubles, soot loading, viscosity, FAME and water content of oil samples on board a ship, allowing all parameters to be measured using a single sample in one test kit. The ATR analyzer uses infrared spectroscopy to determine the presence of damaging elements such as solid particles or water in a representative sample of oil.

COSCO: 10 Vessels with Hans Jensen Lubrication System
One of the world’s biggest shipping companies, China COSCO Shipping Group, has placed an order for 10 large ore carriers from China State Shipbuilding Corporation. COSCO specified the order to include the cylinder lubrication system ‘HJ Lubtronic SIP’ from Hans Jensen Lubricators A/S, as it enables large cost savings through reduced cylinder oil consumption, and reduced wear on cylinder liners and piston rings. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in January 2018. Today’s energy efficient diesel engines for marine vessels are designed to reduce environmental footprints and fuel costs.
New Exhaust Gas Sensor Technology Goes to Market
With market testing now complete, new exhaust gas sensor technology from remote marine data monitoring company Azurtane Limited will go to market. From its new company headquarters in Southampton, Azurtane will market sensor technology for ships developed with support by the UK government under the Innovate UK program. Azurtane began trialing its exhaust gas sensing equipment with Southampton-based ferry company Red Funnel in 2013. The project involved second-by-second measurement of the fuel used on each voyage of the Red Jet 4 Hi-Speed ferry service between Southampton and Cowes.

Reducing Lubrication Oil Consumption
When operating in emission control areas, marine vessels are restricted to reduce the Sulphur content in fuel. The Blending-on-Board system from Maersk Fluid Technology A/S can blend the cylinder oil for all levels of fuel sulphur, while reducing the total lubrication oil consumption by up to 40 percent a year. Wärtsilä Donates Engine to MSU-Northern
Corporate officials from Wärtsilä North America were on the campus of Montana State University-Northern in October to look over their recent engine donation and to tour the new Diesel Technology Center, which is currently under construction. The donated 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 200 high-speed diesel engine and related tools from Wärtsilä are valued at $1.1 million and will be used in Northern’s “Big Bore Lab” in the university’s future Diesel Technology Center.
