Seaspan Orders 10 Dual-fuel LNG Containerships

Seaspan Corporation announced Friday that it has entered into an agreement to order up to 10 dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) containerships from South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries.Seaspan, a wholly owned subsidiary of Atlas Corp., said the deal is for five ultra-modern 15,000 TEU newbuilds, with an option for an additional five. The containerships are scheduled for delivery from first half of 2023 onward, and upon completion will enter 12-year charters with Israel-based shipping company ZIM for its Asia - US East Coast trade."This is a milestone agreement for ZIM…

Derecktor Wins Deal to Build Hybrid RVl for University of Vermont

The University of Vermont (UVM) has ordered what is touted as the first hybrid research vessel, a project which brings together Derecktor Shipyards, BAE Systems and Chartwell Marine.The 19-meter catamaran will be designed for low-emission, low-fuel-burn operations and is set for launch in April 2022. Chartwell Marine’s hybrid design, which is powered by two Cummins QSB 6.7m 306hp diesel engines and two BAE AC traction motors, will provide the University with a new research and instruction platform to facilitate its advanced research operation.

Mitsubishi Turbocharger and Engine America (MTEA) has introduced Mitsubishi’s new mechanical controlled, EPA Tier 4, 1,260-horsepower heavy-duty marine propulsion engine.The Mitsubishi S12R Tier 4 is a 49-liter, V-12, 1,260-horsepower marine propulsion engine operating at 1,600 rpm. SCHOTTEL to Supply Propulsion for Seabulk Newbuilds

German propulsion manufacturer SCHOTTEL announced it has been awarded a contract from Alabama shipbuilder Master Boat Builders to supply a total of six rudderpropellers for a pair of new tugs being constructed for U.S.-based Seabulk Towing Inc, a subsidiary of SEACOR Holdings Inc.Both Robert Allan Ltd.-designed newbuilds will feature the Advanced Rotortug (ART) design triangular propulsion system.The tugs will be propelled by three SCHOTTEL Rudderpropellers type SRP 430 FP with a propeller diameter of 2.4 meters, each driven by a 1,771-kilowatt diesel engine.

NorthStar Midstream Forms LNG Marine Transport Firm

NorthStar Midstream, a portfolio company of funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management, L.P., has announced the formation of Polaris New Energy (“PNE”), a marine transportation company focused on the transportation and distribution of liquefied natural gas (LNG) along the coastal and inland waterways of the United States.NorthStar has executed an agreement with Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding to build a 5,400 cubic meter (CBM), with the ability to potentially construct two sister barges, for coastwise transportation of LNG.
