VDVMS Equips New TSHD Magdalen
A new Jones Act trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Magdalen, recently launched at Eastern Shipbuilding Group’s (ESG) Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla., is expected to be handed over to its owner, U.S. dredging contractor Weeks Marine, before the end of 2017. This modern TSHD has a length of 108.5 meters, breadth of 24.24 meters and a molded depth of 8.31 meters. The state-of-the-art 356’ twin screw dredger is outfitted with BARKE high-lift flap rudders by Van der Velden Marine Systems (VDVMS) in conjunction with Ships Machinery International, Inc. (SMI).
Rolls-Royce Wins USCG OPC Propulsion Contract
Rolls-Royce will provide an extensive range of equipment, including MTU marine generator sets, to a new fleet of U.S. Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters (USCG OPC). Eastern Selects MAN Engines for OPC
The US Coast Guard will have MAN’s 28/33D STC engines installed as the main propulsion for its new Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) programme. The programme is the replacement platform for the 13 ‘Famous’ class and 14 ‘Reliance’ class cutter vessels, making the order the largest vessel procurement order in the Coast Guard’s history. Fairbanks Morse to Power USCG’s Offshore Patrol Cutters
When the U.S. Coast Guard’s first new Offshore Patrol Cutters (OPC) is put to sea in 2021, it will be powered by diesel propulsion engines manufactured in Beloit, Wis., by Fairbanks Morse. The OPC will “provide a critical capability bridge” between the National Security Cutter which patrols the open ocean, and the Fast Response Cutter which serves closer to shore, according to the Coast Guard. The cutters operate independently or in task groups to conduct search and rescue, law enforcement, homeland security and defense missions.
Eastern Delivers for Bay-Houston Towing
Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. has delivered the escort tug David B for Bay-Houston Towing Co. on June 15, 2016. David B (ESG Hull #239) is the third in a series of four Robert Allan, LTD. (RAL) designed Z-Tech 2400 Class terminal and escort tugs currently under construction at Eastern’s Nelson Street facility for Bay-Houston Towing Co. The lead vessel in the series, H. Douglas M (ESG Hull #236), was delivered on February 5, 2016. Eastern is also constructing another identical series of four tugs for Suderman & Young Towing Company.
Eastern Delivers 62nd 90-foot Tug to FMT
Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. announced it has delivered the 62nd 90-foot inland towboat for Florida Marine Transporters, Inc. (FMT) of Mandeville, La., continuing its ongoing new build program. The new vessel, M/V Harvey Sbisa (Hull 192), was delivered on November 30, 2015. It was in the Spring of this year, when Florida Marine Transporters, Inc. signed an additional towboat, bringing the total to 65 vessels contracted over the last 10 years. Five of the most recent 90-foot inland towboat deliveries to Florida Marine occurred over the past 12 months.
Eastern Launches Second MPSV for Hornbeck
Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. has launched the second of two 302’x76’x26’ multipurpose service vessels in the HOSMPSV 310ES series for Hornbeck Offshore Services, LLC., the shipbuilder announced. The new vessel, HOS Woodland (Hull 242), was launched at Eastern’s Allanton facility on Friday, June 19 at an event with hundreds of Eastern employees and guests in attendance. HOS Woodland is the second ship to be christened on Eastern’s newly constructed 425’ rocker beam system installed on the northeast corner of Allanton’s 760’ launch basin.

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. delivered the M/V Bill Seymour (Hull 190), the 60th 90’ Inland Towboat to Florida Marine Transporters, Inc. of Mandeville, La., continuing its ongoing newbuild program. It was in early January 2015, when Florida Marine Transporters, Inc. signed an additional towboat, bringing the total to 63 vessels contracted over the last 10 years. Five of the most recent 90’ inland towboat deliveries to Florida Marine occurred over the past twelve months. The M/V Bill Seymour was constructed at Eastern’s Allanton Facility from a design furnished by Gilbert Associates, Inc.
Eastern Debuts ‘Thunderbolt’ Towboat
Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. introduced its new 120-foot, 4,200-horsepower Inland Towboat design, THUNDERBOLT, combining twin electric V-Pod propulsion and diesel-electric technology for what the builder calls its “vision of the future for the U.S. Eastern said the idea for the THUNDERBOLT came from across the aisle conversations at the 2013 International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans. On the rivers, thruster propulsion systems are starting to get noticed and are outperforming conventional nozzle propeller propulsion systems with main/flanking rudder steering.

As operators ponder the thorny question of dual fuel, LNG or SCR Treatment, GE Transportation’s new medium speed marine diesel engine seemingly simplifies the playing field. The October 2014 news that global oilfield giant Oceaneering had committed to building a ship designed with GE Transportation marine diesel engines was ordinary enough, but the recent keel laying ceremony held at the BAE Systems Shipyard in Mobile, AL held special significance for not only Oceaneeering, but for GE as well.

Attending from Hornbeck was Todd Hornbeck, President & CEO, and Carl Annessa, Executive Vice President & COO, along with 12 senior members of the Hornbeck Team witnessing the launch of the first of ten HOSMAX Offshore Supply Vessels under contract with Eastern. Captain Billy Haugh, who will be taking the vessel to sea as Master once it delivers later this year, and his wife Shandale had the honor of christening the vessel.
Eastern Shipbuilding to Build Large Fishing Trawler
Eastern Shipbuilding Group contracted by O’Hara Corporation to construct a 194-ft freezer stern-trawler. The new vessel is a ST-115 design by Skipsteknisk, AS of Aalesund, Norway, and will be built to DNV classification rules: +1A1, Stern Trawler, E0 Notation for hull, and DNV ICE 1B designed, outfitted and inspected for harsh cold environments. GE to Equip Latest Hornbeck MPSVs at Eastern Shipbuilding
GE’s Power Conversion business was awarded a contract by the Eastern Shipbuilding Group in Panama City, Fla., to supply integrated diesel-electric power, propulsion and vessel control systems for two multipurpose supply vessels (MPSVs) with installed horsepower of 12,070 BHP (9,000 kW). Eastern will build the MPSVs for Hornbeck Offshore Services of Covington, La. Over the last four years, GE has signed seven contracts with Eastern, equipping a total of 24 vessels. Recently, Eastern and Hornbeck launched the first in a series of 10 platform supply vessels (PSVs), which GE also equipped.
Wärtsilä to Provide Harvey Gulf Vessels Integrated Package
Wärtsilä has been awarded a contract by Eastern Shipbuilding Group, of Panama City, Florida to supply an integrated solution for a new multipurpose support vessel (MPSV) for Harvey Gulf International Marine of New Orleans. This offshore vessel is the first in a series of three MPSVs being built for Harvey Gulf. ESG to Build Four RA Tugboats
Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) said that Suderman & Young Towing Company & Bay Houston Towing Company have placed orders for a total of four new Robert Allan, LTD. (RAL) Z-Tech 2400 Class Terminal & Escort Tugs at Eastern’s Panama City, Florida facilities. ESG added that G & H Towing Company will provide the onsite representation for both owners as their agent during the engineering, construction and delivery phases of these contracts. At delivery, G & H Towing will operate each vessel.
