Wes Amelie Retrofit for Synthetic Natural Gas
First dual-fuel retrofit now set to be first vessel globally to use SNG derived from renewable energy in furtherance of Maritime Energy Transition MAN Energy Solutions and Wessels Marine GmbH have announced a technical showcase whereby the 2017-retrofitted ‘Wes Amelie’, a 1,036-teu feeder container ship, will use liquefied SNG (Synthetic Natural Gas) produced from renewable electrical energy as drop-in fuel. The companies are cooperating on the Wes Amelie project with Nauticor…
Containership to Convert to Synthetic Fuel
ROTTERDAM – Today in Rotterdam Wessels Marine and MAN Energy Systems announced an innovative project to convert the containership Wes Amelie to run on Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG).While SNG today is far to sparse and expensive to make it a near term commercial reality, this step forward is significant in that a ship outfitted with an MAN propulsion unit to run on LNG would need no modification to have it run on SNG, effectively making it ‘future proof’ while helping to dispel the…
SCHOTTEL Delivers Propulsion for First Emission-Free Push Boat
The Elektra push boat ordered by BEHALA, Berlin harbor’s warehousing and logistics firm will be equipped with rudder propellers from Schottel. Elektra will be a hybrid canal push boat powered by a combination of fuel cells, batteries and an electric motor. The boat is currently under construction at the Hermann Barthel shipyard in Derben (Germany), and is planned for testing in Berlin in 2020."Elektra shows what is possible," said Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerd Holbach, Project Manager at TU Berlin for the Department of Design and Operation of Maritime Systems.
Fuel Cells for Maritime Shipping
Freudenberg Sealing Technologies will act as a technology partner in the Pa-X-ell2 project. The goal is to develop a new generation of fuel cells for use on seagoing vessels. For the future project on sustainable, CO2-free mobility at sea, the largest shipyard for the construction of cruise ships – Meyer Werft in Papenburg – and the global technology specialist Freudenberg Sealing Technologies intend to equip future generations of cruise ships with fuel cell propulsion. Besides Meyer Werft…
Ice and Easy: The next level of hybridization
The demanding conditions of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia are plain sailing for MS Viikki, the world’s first LNG-fueled bulk carrier. The solution, built around WE Tech’s variable frequency drive technology WE Drive and The Switch direct drive permanent magnet shaft generator, helps the vessel achieve Ice Class 1A propulsion, while still slashing fuel consumption, costs and emissions. It is a game-changer for ice-class operations.Demanding high standardsESL Shipping is…
White Rabbit Superyacht propelled by Schottel
The 84 x 19.1 m superyacht “White Rabbit” built by Australia's Echo Yachts and designed by Sam Sorgiovanni is equipped with azimuth thrusters from Schottel. White Rabbit maneuverability is provided with two Schottel Pump Jets and one Schottel Rim Thruster. Low-noise and low-vibration azimuth thrusters offer high comfort on the largest yacht ever built in Australia. The maneuvering system of the tri-hulled yacht consists of one electric Schottel Rim Thruster type SRT 800 elastically fitted in the bow and delivering an input power of 200 kW.
MAN D&T Rebrands ‘MAN Energy Solutions’
MAN Energy Solutions represents a new vision, as reflected by a new, corporate design. The new branding embodies a strategic and technological transformation, a process the company had already begun back in 2017 by implementing its new strategy for the future: to expand its business with sustainable technologies and solutions such that they become its main source of revenue by 2030. This strategic realignment is supported by the expansion of MAN Energy Solutions’ product range to include hybrid…
Mitsubishi, Wärtsilä Joins for Improved Power and Propulsion Solution
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Equipment Co., LTD (MHI-MME) and the smart technology group Wärtsilä have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the commercial marketing of a new energy solution for ships. The solution combines innovative technologies from both companies to produce greater power generation capacity and higher propeller propulsion for marine vessels. By integrating MHI-MME's waste heat recovery and energy saving power generation system (WHRS) with Wärtsilä's operational control technology for shaft generator systems…
Wärtsilä Tests Wireless Charging for Hybrid Coastal Ferry
Wärtsilä informs it has tested its automatic wireless induction charging system on a hybrid powered commercial coastal ferry, the first in the world operating with high power wireless charging capability for its batteries. The tests were carried out in Norwegian during the end of August and early September on the 85 meter long MF Folgefonn owned by Norled, one of Norway's largest ferry operators waters. The project, partially funded by Innovation Norway, represents a breakthrough in the evolution of plug-in electrically operated vessels, Wärtsilä said.
Barillec Highlights its VarShaft System in Amsterdam
On the occasion of Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo in Amsterdam, Barillec will focus on its VarShaft system, whose first prototype is now available in its showroom in Concarneau. VarShaft has been developed to improve energy efficiency of fishing boats and other service vessels. According to Barillec, many French shipowners already showed interest into this concept that allows them to improve the energy efficiency by reducing the fuel consumption up to 15 percent. Barillec marine proposes to ship-owners…
GE Enters the Containership Industry
GE’s Marine Solutions has signed a contract to provide auxiliary electric systems to containership operator Maersk Line’s second generation Triple-E vessels, thus representing GE’s entry into the container shipping industry. The contract will see GE provide Maersk Line with its new Power Take Off/Power Take In (PTO/PTI) technology, which consists of two drives, two induction motors and a power management system. The solution provides excess power on demand while reducing fuel consumption, GE said.
Wärtsilä's' New Fuel Pump for Gas Operations
The latest addition to Wärtsilä's portfolio of gas pumps has been introduced. The new Wärtsilä Svanehøj ECA Fuel Pump (EFP) has been developed in close cooperation with designers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel systems to support gas fuelled engines that achieve greater efficiency. The new Wärtsilä pump offers a number of advantages, including having no tank connections below liquid level, no electrical components inside the tank, and hardly any contribution to the generation of boil off gas.
Croatia Shipyard Delivers Powerful Dredger
Uljanik Shipyard delivers the 26,000 dwt trailing suction hopper dredger 'Bartolomeu Dias' to Luxembourg's Jan De Nul S.A. This is the second such dredger constructed at the yard, with a LOA of 147.6 m and breadth of 30 m.
