LR Grants AiP for LPG-fueled Gas Carrier

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from Lloyd's Register (LR) for a very large gas carrier (VLGC) design capable of using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as fuel.LPG presents advantages over marine diesel oil (MDO) and heavy fuel oil (HFO) when a VLGC is able to utilize the LPG cargo on board as a fuel. However, safety issues need to be thoroughly examined particularly in relation to potential leaks of LPG in a confined space and the implications for ventilation.

This year is the 60th anniversary of VescoPlastics and Vesconite, its first engineering plastic. The company's line of thermopolymers is used extensively in the marine, agriculture, heavy off-road equipment, pump, and hydroelectric and renewable energy industries.Founded by Alain Leger, an entrepreneurial engineer, Vesconite started in response to a need for an alternative to nylon bushings, which swelled and seized in humid underground mines. Years of testing resulted in a thermopolymer that had exceptionally low friction properties and could be machined to close tolerances.

Houston based Thrustmaster of Texas, Inc. will be supplying the azimuth thrusters for Zentech’s new Z-210 Mobile Offshore Unit. The thrusters are driven by electric motors powered by a redundant power system from GE Marine Solutions. The thrusters will be ABS classed for main propulsion and DP-2 dynamic positioning of the vessel, which is currently under construction at CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding in China. Calnetix Inks Manufacturing Deal with Tokyo Boeki

Calnetix Technologies said it has signed an exclusive manufacturing agreement with Tokyo Boeki Machinery Ltd. for the Hydrocurrent Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) 125 EJW shipboard heat recovery system. Under the agreement, Calnetix will supply the Carefree Integrated Power Module (IPM) and other proprietary components, and Tokyo Boeki’s Energy Industries Division will manufacture the finished Hydrocurrent systems. The product will be sold and supported by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery and Engine Company (MHI-MME) through its worldwide distribution channels.

Offshore O&M Expenditure Forecast: $335B in 5 Years

DDW Wins Groundbreaking GOM Conversion Contract

Drydocks World signed a Contract with Singapore based AET, a global leader in petroleum shipping, for two Tanker-to-Modular Capture Vessel (MCV) conversion projects. AET is converting these vessels as part of the Marine Well Containment Company’s (MWCC) well containment system. MWCC is a not-for-profit, stand-alone organization with 10 member companies ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Shell, BP, Apache Anadarko, BHP Billiton, Statoil and Hess. The conversion will be implemented at the Drydocks World – Dubai facility.

BELCO and A.P. Moller - Maersk Ink Exhaust Gas Cleaning Contract

Demonstration Aboard the Maersk Taurus Containership. Belco Technologies Corporation (BELCO), a wholly owned subsidiary of DuPont, headquartered in Parsippany, N.J., USA, has reached an agreement with A.P. Moller – Maersk, headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, to design, manufacture and supply the BELCO advanced marine scrubbing system for demonstration on one of the auxiliary engines aboard the Maersk Taurus. The system will be designed to remain on board as a commercial installation following the successful demonstration.
