Sterling PlanB Gains DNV Type Approval for Preventing Thermal Runaway

Marine energy storage company Sterling PlanB (SPBES) said it is now fully certified under new 2020 class rules for commercial vessel batteries set out by classification society DNV.As an early adopter of the certification, SPBES becomes one of the first energy storage solutions (ESS) providers to adhere to the new testing standard, which substantially mitigates the risk of the spread of fire by eliminating the propagation of thermal runaway within a battery module.Securing the type approval certification required extreme testing conditions, the company said.

University of Vermont Orders Hybrid-electric Research Vessel

The University of Vermont has ordered a new research vessel featuring an emissions-reducing electric power and propulsion system.The 64-foot aluminum catamaran, designed by Chartwell Marine and currently under construction at Derecktor Shipyards, will be equipped with a hybrid-electric power and propulsion system supplied and integrated by BAE Systems. Wärtsilä’s Hybrid Solution Selected for New Isle of Man Ferry

Finnish technology group Wärtsilä said it will supply a range of solutions for a new 132-meter RoPax ferry being built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Co (IOMSP). Corvus' Orca ESS for Asahi's All-Electric Tanker

Japan's Kawasaki Heavy Industries has ordered a Corvus Energy battery-based energy storage system (ESS) to integrate it into the zero-emissions all-electric propulsion and electrical systems aboard the “e5 tanker” under construction for Asahi Tanker.The battery-powered vessel was designed by e5 Lab Inc., a consortium of leading Japanese shipping and maritime services companies, including Asahi Tanker Co., Ltd., set up to build infrastructure services focused on electrically powered vessels.

The main propulsion system of the Sembcorp hybrid tug comprises twin 16-cyclinder mtu Series 4000 gas units which will provide a combined total power of 2984 kilowatts. World's First LNG-hybrid Tug Will Run mtu Gas Engines

A new liquefied natural gas (LNG)-hybrid tug—said to be the world's first—will be equipped with two mtu 16V 4000 M55RN gas engines from manufacturer Rolls-Royce.The harbor tug will be built by Sembcorp Marine Integrated Yard and operated in Singapore by Jurong Marine Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine. Energy Storage Systems Continue to Expand in North American Maritime Markets

North America is increasingly adopting energy storage systems (ESS) to use in combination with combustion engines or as the sole energy carrier in fully electric-powered systems.We clearly see a transition from ‘consideration’ to ‘execution’ of hybrid and all-electric maritime projects. Stakeholders want to explore how to make vessels more energy efficient and less polluting. Corvus Energy has deployed over half of the ESSs aboard vessels globally, totaling over 300 megawatt hours (MWh).In North America, Corvus has deployed 24 MWh of energy storage capacity, and there are 13 vessels under U.S.

Corvus' Energy Storage Systems for Harvey Gulf's Offshore Vessels

Corvus Energy, an energy storage solutions provider for the offshore energy industry, has won a contract with Wärtsilä to deliver its Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for the offshore support vessel fleet operated by U.S.-based Harvey Gulf.According to Corvus, the orders follow the successful sea trial of Harvey Energy, the first-ever LNG-battery hybrid retrofit of a platform supply vessel (PSV) in the Americas. Volvo Penta to Supply Gensets for Five New Electric Ferries

Turkish boat builder Sefine Shipyard has won a contract to supply Norwegian operator Boreal with five electric ferries – each supported by two Volvo Penta D13 MG IMO III generator sets (gensets). The ferries will operate to-and-from the islands in the inner Oslo fjord and run scheduled services throughout the day. The Multi Maritime-designed vessels will each have a length of 35 meters, a beam of eight meters, and two passenger decks capable of accommodating up to 350 people.The ferries will be built under DNV-GL classification regulations.

Harvey Gulf Equipping Four More PSVs for Tri-fuel Ops

U.S. offshore support vessel company Harvey Gulf International has ordered Wärtsilä's energy storage system for four of its platform supply vessels.The order comes just after Harvey said in September it had completed an upgrade of its platform supply vessel Harvey Energy, making it the first "tri-fuel" PSV in the U.S. The upgrade included a Wärtsilä battery-power system on the PSV which was already a dual-fuel vessel capable of fully operating on LNG or diesel.Now, the company will have five offshore vessels capable of full tri-fuel operation…

It is “pre-COVID ” April of 2018, and 174 member states of IMO adopt a new strategy to reduce greenhouse gases from shipping. The meetings are considered “urgent” and the target is to reduce carbon emissions in half by 2050. Prior to those “targets” shipping dealt with regulations to address SOx and NOx reductions. Most of which have resulted in limited success due to infrastructure problems and a consideration as a temporary fix.The technical world has responded with low sulfur fuels, LNG, and methanol to work towards the target.

Corvus Batteries for Five New All-Electric Ferries in Amsterdam

Corvus Energy will deliver lithium-ion battery-based energy storage systems (ESS) from for five new all-electric ferries being built for Amsterdam’s municipal public transport provider, GVB, that will replace the current fleet built in 1930s.The order for the Corvus Energy ESS has been placed by Holland Ship Electric. The ferries, that are being built by Holland Shipyard Group, will operate on three of the North Sea Canal routes, replacing the current fleet built in the 1930s.
