ABB's Hybrid Power and Propulsion for Færøysund Live Fish Carrier

ABB will provide a hybrid power and propulsion solution with integral energy storage for the under-construction Færøysund live fish carrier.This will be the first live fish carrier to feature ABB hybrid power and propulsion solution with integral energy storage.The 77m-long diesel-electric vessel is being built at the Aas Mek. Verksted AS shipyard in Vestnes, Norway, for Nova Sea Service AS, one of Norway’s largest producers of Atlantic farmed salmon. Due delivery in September 2021, Færøysund is Aas Mek.

Corvus ESS Chosen for Danish Ferry Newbuild

Danish shipyard Hvide Sande Shipyard, Steel & Service has selected Canadian-based Corvus Energy to supply the energy storage system (ESS) for a new fully electric ferry for Molslinjen, the largest domestic ferry company in Denmark.The new ferry, designed by JJohannesson Maritime Engineering and OSK-ShipTech, will be the second all-electric ferry in Denmark. Its 12-minute trip between Fanø and Esbjerg is very popular; last year the ferries in operation carried 1.8 million passengers in total.

ABB to Supply Hybrid-electric Propulsion for WSF Newbuilds

Flow Batteries Tested For Zero-Emission Marine Propulsion

A new project, FLO-MAR, has attracted funding from MarRI-UK’s Clean Maritime Call to assess the feasibility of using flow batteries in vessels to enable zero-emission marine propulsion and auxiliary power. Four UK organizations will work together on the project to investigate how the design of electric and hybrid ships, from ferries through to tugs and wind farm vessels, can be optimized to accommodate flow batteries and to assess the advantages this technology offers in comparison with existing lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen fuel-cells.

Corvus Supplies ESS for Nordlaks Hybrid Live Fish Carrier

Corvus Energy announced it has been selected by BMA Technology in Turkey to supply the lithium-ion battery-based energy storage system (ESS) for a new Live Fish Carrier to be built at Tersan Shipyard in Turkey.This is the second vessel in a series of two for Norwegian salmon and trout producer, Nordlaks. Corvus Energy also delivered the ESS for Bjørg Pauline, which was recently launched from Tersan Shipyard.The NSK Design 4126 – Live Fish Carrier, LNG HYBRID is among the most efficient and most advanced of its type.

Jurong Marine Services Orders LNG Hybrid Tug

Sembcorp Marine subsidiary Jurong Marine Services has ordered a hybrid tug for delivery from the Sembcorp Marine shipyard by the end of 2020.The tug, which will operate in Singapore harbor, will be equipped with ABB’s electric propulsion, power, energy storage, control and automation technology, making it the first tug in South Asia capable of switching between low emission liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines and zero-emission battery power, ABB said.LNG as a fuel virtually eliminates sulphur oxide emissions…

Corvus Energy Invests in Canadian Battery Production

Corvus Energy is moving forward with plans to invest in its Canadian operations by expanding its Richmond, B.C. facility and increasing manufacturing capacity.As reported in early 2018, Corvus Energy is rolling out plans for expanded maritime battery manufacturing facilities in both Bergen, Norway and Richmond, B.C., Canada. A new automated battery factory in Bergen began producing energy storage systems (ESS) in Q4 2019. Corvus has signed a contract for investment in new production line equipment in the Richmond, B.C.

Japanese technology company Eco Marine Power (EMP) has announced that the EnergySail, a sail-assisted propulsion and solar power device for ships, is ready for demonstration and evaluation testing in Japan.EnergySail, which is unveiled at the Onomichi Marine Tech Test Centre (MTTC) in Japan, is an upgrade of the pre-production unit and represents one of the smaller types of EnergySail that will be put into commercial service.It was manufactured by EMP’s strategic partner Teramoto Iron Works Co., Ltd.

Wärtsilä Rolls-out Pure Gas Marine Engine

Finnish corporation Wärtsilä has launched the 31SG pure gas engine for marine market applications.The 31SG is based on the successful Wärtsilä 31 product platform; the diesel version of the engine has been recognized by Guinness World Records as being the world’s most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine.The Wärtsilä 31SG engine further reduces the total cost of ownership and the environmental footprint for vessels operating in regions where there is a developed gas infrastructure.
