The International Maritime Organization (IMO) greenhouse gas (GHG) strategy signals a true game changing moment for the shipping industry. External pressure was building, but the IMO strategy sets a time line and goals for shipping to tackle one of the great challenges of our time. Yanmar Delivers Dual-Fuel Tugboat Propulsion Engines
Japan-based Yanmar has delivered two 6EY26DF dual-fuel commercial marine engines with the ability to use both heavy fuel oil (HFO) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuels for the LNG tugboat. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) will take delivery of the vessel once construction is completed in February 2019 with the tugboat expected to commence operation in April 2019.Yanmar has also received orders for the LNG fuel tanks, buffer tanks, and gas combustion devices that make up the LNG fuel feed systems for the engines.The MOL-owned vessel will be manufactured by Kanagawa Dockyard Co., Ltd.

Wärtsilä is building a new center of research, product development and production, in Vaskiluoto, Vaasa. Corvus Energy Expands
Corvus Energy, manufacturer of energy storage systems for maritime applications, announced two production and R&D expansion plans underway in Canada and Norway. The new battery factories will be more modern and more automated than other similar factories, result in eight times the production capacity compared to today.First, the Corvus Energy factory in the Vancouver, Canada region will be expanded and upgraded to house a 200 MWh semi-automated battery production facility. A new product R&D, design and engineering facility will also be developed.
Rolls-Royce to Upgrade PSVs with Battery Packs
Six offshore platform supply vessels (PSVs) built and then laid up by the Cosco Guangdong yard in China will be equipped with battery-powered energy systems from Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine before going to work for SEACOSCO. The six vessels are among eight that were laid up at the shipyard after being ordered in 2013 and 2014 that were recently taken over by SEACOSCO, a joint venture between SEACOR Marine Holding and China Cosco Shipping Group. The vessel’s new owners have decided to give six of the vessels an environmental upgrade, with an option for a further two.

Report: Methanol a Viable Alternative Marine Fuel
Methanol has a “historic opportunity” as a marine fuel, according to a new report published by research group FCBI Energy. Despite having many attributes that make methanol an attractive, low-emissions marine fuel, it has sometimes been overlooked in policy and industry discussions, according to FCBI Energy, whose report Methanol as a Marine Fuel finds the chemical to be a well-understood and safe to handle as a viable alternative to changing to low sulfur diesel, installing scrubbers or converting to LNG.
