MAN B&W Dual-Fuel Engines Passes Half-Million Hours

MAN Energy Solutions has announced that its two-stroke, dual-fuel portfolio has now logged over 500,000 operational hours. MAN Diesel & Turbo, HHI-EMD Invest in New Test Facility

As the global maritime industry steams toward ever-stricter fuel and emission rules, industry leaders such as MAN Diesel & Turbo and Hyundai continue to invest in facilities and technologies. In the most recent case, MAN D&T said today it will build a new test-engine facility in collaboration with its two-stroke licensee, HHI-EMD, the engine and machinery division of Hyundai Heavy Industries. The new venture -- located in Ulsan, Korea at HHI-EMD’s works and scheduled to open in 2019 -- will expand MAN Diesel & Turbo’s R&D test capacity and strengthen its development of dual-fuel gas engines.

MOL Rolls Out Refined PBCF

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has announced that its group company MOL Techno-Trade will start selling an upgraded version of its energy-saving Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF). MOL Techno-Trade has sold more than 3,100 PBCFs to ship owners all over the world. The new type of PBCF was jointly developed by MOL, Akishima Laboratories (Mitsui Zosen), and MOL Techno-Trade. ABB Shaft Generators, Turbochargers for DFDS Vessels

ABB shaft generators will raise the energy efficiency on two DFDS vessels which have been designed to meet the latest environmental regulations. Two shaft generators will be installed in each of the cargo Ro-Ro ships allowing the main engines to operate at a wider, more optimal speed range. The shaft generator system takes its power from main engines, thereby increasing safety if there is a failure on the auxiliary engine. The ships’ main engines will also be turbocharged by ABB’s latest generation technology.

First ME-GIE Ethane Engine Unveiled at Mitsui

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) has completed the world’s first ME-GIE ethane-operated two-stroke diesel engine. The engines will be for propulsion of three ethylene carriers, which will also carry ethane as cargo. The Mitsui-MAN B&W 7G50ME-C9.5-GIE is the first engine in a series of three for installation in three LEG (liquefied ethylene gas) carriers of 36,000 m3 for Hartmann Schiffahrt of Germany and Ocean Yield of Norway, being built at Sinopacific Offshore Engineering (SOE) in China.

World’s First MAN B&W ME-GI Enters Service

Nakilat, in association with Qatari LNG producers Qatargas and RasGas Company Limited and engine manufacturer MAN Diesel & Turbo, recently celebrated the success of the ME-GI project involving the retrofit of chartered Q-Max vessel, Rasheeda, with a gas-burning M-Type Electronically Controlled – Gas Injection (ME-GI) System, which has now been successfully commissioned. The Qatari-owned Q-Max vessel is the world’s first low-speed marine diesel engine to be converted to use LNG as a fuel. The retrofit modification meets the current known and future stated global emissions regulations.

Becker Marine Systems product presentation at the dutch Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo will put a strong focus on environmentally-friendly technology for the marine industry like the world’s first LNG Hybrid Barge HUMMEL. Recently, the Hamburg-based LNG Hybrid Barge successfully completed a programme of technical trials, right in time for the cruise ship season. With the use of to the new floating power plant, cruise ships will be supplied with clean energy produced from environmentally-friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG) during their layovers at port.

MAN Diesel & Turbo Reports ME-GI Milestones

MAN Diesel & Turbo reports that its ME-GI engine has now received more than 100 orders. FLEX LNG announced on February 2 that two-stroke slow-speed ME-GI main engines will be used as the propulsion system for two LNG carriers to be built at Samsung Heavy Industries. The expected delivery dates of the vessels have been postponed from Q1 2017 to Q1 and Q2 2018. First LNG Bunkering of OSV in North America

Harvey Gulf International Marine, LLC reported that its dual fuel offshore support vessel (OSV) M/V Harvey Energy has today bunkered LNG as a marine fuel. The news makes Harvey Gulf the first North American owner/operator of a dual fuel OSV to bunker LNG as a marine fuel, as well as the first to complete a truck to vessel transfer of LNG. The bunkering took place at a shore-based terminal owned by a subsidiary of Martin Midstream Partners L.P. in Pascagoula, Miss. Participating in the activities alongside the crew of the Harvey Energy was the U.S.

Order Placed for First Gas-Powered Car Carriers

Dual-fuel ME-GI engine adds important reference to growing list. United European Car Carriers (UECC) has signed a contract for the construction of two LNG-powered Pure Car/Truck Carriers (PCTCs). A single MAN B&W 8S50ME-GI dual-fuel engine will power each newbuilding. The PCTCs will be capable of operating on LNG fuel, heavy fuel oil or marine gas oil, providing greater flexibility and efficiency. They represent the first such vessels globally to be fitted with an LNG propulsion system.

DSME Returns for More Dual-Fuel Engines

Four two-stroke ME-GI engines ordered for two LNGCs. MAN Diesel & Turbo has received an order for four MAN B&W 5G70ME-GI engines in connection with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co.,Ltd. (DSME) agreeing a deal with the BW Group to build two LNG carriers. The technical engine specification complies with IMO Tier II, with options to include remedies for Tier III compliance at a later stage. The 173,400 m3 vessels are scheduled for delivery in late 2017/early 2018 and will be built at DSME’s Okpo shipyard in Geoje, Korea.

MAN Retrofits SCR System to DFDS Ship

MAN Diesel & Turbo says it has been awarded a Tier III-compatibility certificate by the DNV-GL classification society for MAN 8L21/31 four-stroke engine aboard a DFDS Seaways ship with a retrofitted SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. While the engine alone meets IMO Tier II emission criteria, the SCR system for NOx reduction raises the whole system to the standard demanded by IMO Tier III rules. The ‘Petunia Seaways’ is a cargo ship that sails a regular North Sea route between Gothenburg, and Immingham, respectively for DFDS Seaways.

Doosan Delivers a ‘World’s First’ to NASSCO

Doosan Engine has confirmed delivery of the world’s first dual-fuel, low-speed ME-GI engine to the American National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) shipyard in San Diego, USA. The new engine is capable of operation on LNG and/or bunker C oil and will power the first of two 3,100-teu container ships ordered by TOTE, the American marine transportation company. The Korean engine maker originally won the order to build the ME-GI engines in 2013, since which time the first ME-GI unit has successfully passed through design, manufacture, and test-run stages.

Rolls-Royce has been awarded the maritime Heyerdahl Award 2014. The award was presented by His Majesty King Harald at the Norwegian Shipowners’ Associations Annual Conference in Oslo March 31. American Market Again Chooses MAN B&W ME-GI

Crowley orders multiple main and auxiliary dual-fuel engines for efficient, emissions-friendly U.S. – Puerto Rico-trade ConRo ships. Florida-based Crowley Maritime Corporation, the marine solutions, transportation and logistics company, has placed an order for 2 × ConRo ships. Each vessel will be powered by an MAN B&W 8S70ME-GI8.2 main engine and 3 × MAN 9L28/32DF auxiliary engines. The ConRo ships – with container Lift-On/Lift-Off (LO/LO) and Roll-On/Roll-Off (RO/RO) – will be built by VT Halter Marine Inc. of Pascagoula, Mississippi.

MAN Dual-Fuel Engines for Two New LNG Carriers

Norwegian shipowners, Knutsen OAS Shipping, have ordered 2 × 2 7G70ME-GI engines to power two new 176,300 m3 capacity LNG carriers they have on order. MAN Diesel & Turbo has verified that, even when compared to the best, modern DFDE propulsion solution, an ME-GI engine delivers fuel savings of more than 30 tonnes of gas per day when operating at a normal ship speed of 15-17 knots. To date, MAN Diesel & Turbo say they have clinched orders for 42 dual-fuel units, representing a power output of 780 MW. The ME-GI engine represents the culmination of many years’ work.
