Japan Trio Begins Work on an Ammonia-Fueled Tugboat

As the marine industry works to find the ‘fuel of the future’ to address increasingly stringent emission regulations, an interesting development from a trio of marine powers in Japan seeks to develop the world’s first ammonia-fueled tugboat. MAN Releases First IMO Tier III Workboat Engine

551 to 1,213 kW engine power range now available; low-cost, SCR-only solution; technology in standard production at MAN since 2006.MAN Engines – a business unit of MAN Truck & Bus – is now offering 12-cylinder, IMO Tier III emission standards engines for workboats, spanning a comprehensive power range from 551 to 1,213 kW. The engines are im-mediately available. This is particularly relevant to customers in Canada and the USA’s East and West Coast Emission Control Areas (ECAs), who are now subject to regulatory limits around 70% stricter than IMO Tier II.

MAN Presents Exhaust Gas Aftertreatment System at SMM

MAN Engines is presenting its solution for meeting the IMO Tier III and US EPA Tier 4 emission standards for commercial use at the SMM trade fair in Hamburg: the modular exhaust gas aftertreatment system (EAT).The EAT offers a high level of flexibility and is extremely compact and lightweight. Its modularity makes a wide range of tailored installation configurations possible as the individual SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) components can be positioned differently. “By minimizing the system down to just a few components, it stays compact, regardless of its configuration.

SMM Launches with High-Profile Guest Speakers

At today’s opening press conference of the international maritime trade fair in Hamburg, political and business leaders discussed current challenges facing the shipping industry. The focus of the debate was on the 0.5 percent sulphur limit for ship fuels which will take effect on January 1,  2020, and the industry's goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions from global shipping in half by the year 2050. Roughly 2,300 exhibitors and the extensive conference program accompanying the trade fair will deliver answers to the industry's complex questions. Roughly 50,000 visitors are expected to attend.

First Mobile MTU Gas Engines for Rederij Doeksen

The first two preproduction units of the new mobile MTU gas engine from Rolls-Royce have completed performance tests and were accepted by the customer at the beginning of December. MTU delivered the first two of a total of four 16-cylinder Series 4000 gas engines, each with an output of 1,492 kW, for two new catamarans. From 2018, the two aluminum vessels will operate ferry services on the Dutch Wadden Sea. They are currently being built by Strategic Marine’s shipyard in Vietnam for the Dutch shipping company Doeksen.

MTU Brings Latest Propulsion Systems to Cannes and Monaco

Rolls-Royce is showing off its latest state-of-the-art propulsion systems and service solutions from MTU for motor and sailing yachts at this year’s yacht shows in Cannes and Monaco. At the Festival de la Plaisance in Cannes, which takes place from September 12 to 17, MTU will be presenting a new close-to-production prototype hybrid system based on its 16-cylinder Series 2000 engine on Stand Jetee 179. The focus will also be on models of the Pininfarina bridge components and MTU’s Premium Yacht Service.

Lake Constance Ferry to Test MTU Gas Engine

From 2019, Rolls-Royce Power Systems and the City of Constance public utility are to begin testing the marine propulsion technology of the future on Lake Constance. This takes the form of a gas engine carrying the MTU brand. The public utility's new car ferry is to be equipped with twin eight-cylinder Series 4000 gas engines from MTU, each delivering 746 kW. This makes it the first inland waterway passenger vessel in Europe to be propelled by straightforward high-speed gas engines. The fuel will be liquefied natural gas.

New MTU Engines Make Their Debut

At the international maritime exhibition Nor-Shipping in Oslo from May 30 to June 2 2017, MTU, part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, presented its propulsion and systems portfolio, primarily for offshore supply vessels, workboats and ferries. This included Series 2000, 4000 and 8000 propulsion engines in an output range from 400 to 10,000 kW, hybrid propulsion solutions and diesel electric propulsion systems and diesel gensets for the supply of on-board power. Rolls-Royce showcased MTU’s Series 4000 diesel engine meeting IMO III and EPA Tier 4 emission regulations.

The Digital Future of Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors

CMR Group’s chief technical officer, Patrice Flot, considers the current approach to sensing exhaust gas temperature (EGT) on high horsepower engine platforms and the capabilities provided by new digital technology. An EGT sensor measures the temperature of the engine exhaust gas to prevent damage to critical components such as the after treatment system, turbines and cylinder head exhaust valves. It can also be used inside the combustion chambers where hot gases are generated.

Rolls-Royce Celebrates 20th Anniversary of MTU Series 4000

Packed with technical innovations, the MTU Series 4000 engine received accolades when it was presented to international experts for the first time at the SMM trade fair in October 1996. Series 4000 engines were the first of their kind to be fitted with common rail injection as standard and were 10 years ahead of their time. The Series 4000 has gone on to become MTU’s biggest selling engine in production. To date, over 37,000 Series 4000 engines have been sold to customers across the world for a wide variety of applications from marine propulsion and energy generation to off-highway vehicles…

New Double-ended Ferry for Norderney

Ferries operated by Norden-Frisia AG have been serving the East Frisian island of Norderney for many decades. Navigation in these coastal waters poses special challenges: in some areas the waterway only leaves a few centimeters below the keel and the water contains a significant amount of swirled-up sand. A new sister ship of the double-ended ferry MS Frisia IV equipped with Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP) is to enter service in summer 2015. The shipping company again chose Voith Schneider Propellers as these are ideally suited for the specific operating conditions in shallow tidelands.

The groundbreaking ceremony at Plant 1 in Friedrichshafen marked the start of construction work on a new R&D test stand facility for Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen.

MTU Builds New R&D Test Facility

Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen held a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction work on a new R&D test facility at Plant 1. The company plans to invest more than €60 million in the project by 2015. In the future, technicians will be able to run function tests on newly developed engines on the new, cutting-edge test stands with work including areas such as the development of new combustion processes, engine control systems, engine-specific exhaust gas aftertreatment plants and gas engines.

Workboat Engine MTU Series 4000 Upgrade by Tognum

Tognum to make upgraded MTU Series 4000 workboat engines available summer 2013. Tognum will enhance its MTU Series 4000 Ironmen workboat engines for compliance with US EPA Tier 3 emissions regulations. This latest version of the Ironmen engines is based on today’s proven MTU Series 4000 M63 long-stroke engine, which meets EPA Tier 2, IMO Tier 2 and ZKR II emissions regulations. The new generation Series 4000 M64 engine will be EPA Tier 3-compliant using only in-engine technology…

Tognum Upgrades MTU Series 2000 Yacht Engines

Tognum said it will develop its MTU Series 2000 yacht engines for compliance with US EPA Tier 3 Recreational and IMO Tier III emissions regulations. The new Series 2000 M96 engines will be able to cover outputs up to 2,600 bhp (1,940 kW), at the same time complying with IMO Tier II and EPA Tier 3 regulations using in-engine technology only. Compliance with IMO Tier III will be possible with SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment. Despite the lower exhaust emissions, a reduction in fuel consumption will still be achieved.
