First Mega-Boxship Retrofit to LNG Ordered

Hapag-Lloyd pilot gas-conversion leads the way for emissions reduction and decarbonizationMAN Energy Solutions has signed a contract for the conversion of a 15,000 TEU container vessel to dual-fuel operation. The container vessel MV SAJIR is owned by Hapag-Lloyd, a leading liner shipping companies, and normally serves a route from Asia to northern Europe via the Suez canal. The pilot project will entail the conversion of an existing, HFO-burning MAN B&W 9S90ME-C engine to a dual-fuel MAN B&W ME-GI (-Gas Injection) prime mover capable of running on HFO and LNG.

For Hire: Battery Hybrid PSVs

Systems integrator and equipment maker Rolls-Royce has quietly been adding hybridizing energy-storage packages to a diverse list of vessels. Yet, so, too, has one of its clients — Louisiana-based SEACOR Marine, as it reacts early to tightened emissions and energy-management standards, or EMS, for vessels plying Europe and North America. Fuel savings and energy-company clients seeking green credentials are, it turns out, just part of the upside driving battery retrofits.The fuel savings to be had for keeping thrusters on battery power are a powerful selling point, to be sure.

Royston Appointed as Niigata Representative in Nigeria

Independent diesel engine service company Royston has been appointed service, sales and parts agent for Niigata diesel engines in Nigeria. Royston has been a long-standing representative for Niigata in the UK and Ireland, providing maintenance, spares and service support to the medium speed engine manufacturer for over 20 years. The appointment is supportive of Royston’s expanding fleet management offering to customers where all diesel engines in a fleet can be managed from a single source.

SolstadFarstad and Yxney Maritime AS have completed a pilot project to develop and roll out the fuel efficiency and emission reduction software MarESS. During the pilot, the combination of MarESS and skilled crews generated significant fuel savings for SolstadFarstad and their clients, leading to the contract for implementation for the entire fleet. “SolstadFarstad’s work with the SolstadFarstad Green Operations campaign is taken to the next level with MarESS,” says Tor Inge Dale, COO in SolstadFarstad.

Torqeedo Partners with Sentinel Marine Solutions and WhisperPower

Torqeedo has announced strategic agreements to integrate Sentinel Boat Monitors and WhisperPower smart power generation systems into its electric boat propulsion product offerings. The announcements were made in a press conference at the Dusseldorf International Boat Show Jan. 23. The Sentinel Boat Monitors are now fully integrated with Torqeedo’s Cruise, Travel and Ultralight electric propulsion systems. The Sentinel app allows remote monitoring of the vessel’s location and onboard systems, and provides automatic alerts of any malfunctions and alarms.

A Hybrid Drive’s Digital Landscape

Hybrid drive and potential fuel savings are well known — from 10 to 30 percent, according to the sources we’ve written about over the years. Less known, is the potential need to purchase some sort of remote monitoring package to complement that diesel-electric or battery hybrid system from a system operator in order to secure the maximum safety benefits. As the count of system operators offering hybrid drives grows, so too, it seems, there’s continuous need to look at who they are and what they’re offering.

Corvus, Scandlines Ink 10-year Service Deal

Corvus Energy said it has been awarded a 10-year service and maintenance agreement for the entire Scandlines hybrid ferry fleet. The contract includes both traditional service and maintenance of the fleets’ energy storage systems, plus Corvus’ remote condition-based monitoring service, Watchman. The first ferry operator to build and operate large ROPAX (roll-on/off passenger) hybrid ferries that combine traditional diesel power with advanced battery power, Scandlines utilizes Corvus’ lithium-ion based energy storage systems throughout the entire fleet to provide the battery power.

ABB’s OCTOPUS for Torvald Klaveness vessels

ABB’s OCTOPUS marine software will be installed on three new Torvald Klaveness vessels to help them meet incoming emissions regulations. The OCTOPUS reporting software is compliant with the IMO Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) and supports future European Union Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) rules. OCTOPUS gathers information from onboard sensors and gives insight into key performance parameters, such as fuel efficiency, allowing Klaveness to optimize fleet-wide performance.

Wärtsilä Helps Optimize Albacora's Fishing Fleet

Wärtsilä has signed a long-term Technical Management Agreement to optimize the performance of 10 of the Spanish company Albacora S.A.'s fishing vessels. The five-year agreement was tailored to meet the requirements of Albacora's fleet management, providing technical assistance and maintenance planning for fishing vessels operating around the world. Wärtsilä to Power Two Indian Dredgers

Wärtsilä has won an order for two new 8000m3 trailing suction hopper dredgers being built for the Adani group, India's largest private multi-port operator. The vessels are the first of a new IHC Beagle series designed by Royal IHC (IHC) of the Netherlands. IHC will also build the dredgers. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in February, 2016. The Wärtsilä scope of supply comprises two 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 main engines for the first vessel, and two 7-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 main engines for the second one, together with four Wärtsilä CPPs with shafts.

ABB Powers Crystal Cruises 'Exclusive Class' Ships

ABB  won a wide scope of orders to deliver propulsion systems for two new cruise ships to be built by the Lloyd Werft Group in Germany, for Crystal Cruises’ ‘Exclusive Class’ announced last year. ABB will deliver four of Azipod XO units – a gearless steerable propulsion system comprising an electric drive motor contained in a submerged pod outside the ship’s hull – to be used on the new builds. One of the systems is designed specifically for ice-going service. Furthermore, the Azipod systems will reduce ships’ lifecycle costs and help them operate at optimum efficiency.
