With two far-reaching events scheduled to take place in the coming weeks, September 2016 will be a special month for Babcock Noell GmbH as the company announced new scrubber installations and its debut at SMM in Hamburg. In the last couple of months the Würzburg-based company has transferred its know-how of the flue gas desulfurization of land-based expertise of more than 80 realized SOx-Scrubbers into the maritime sector. Currently, a hybrid SOx-Scrubber is installed as a multi-stream system and will be commissioned for a 24000dwt product tanker shipping company Carl Büttner from Bremen.

CROE to Supply Scrubbers to STENA RoRo
CR Ocean Engineering, L.L.C. (CROE) has recently been awarded the design and supply of two Open Loop exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbing systems) from STENA RoRo AB. The two systems will be installed to reduce SO2 from two main engines aboard the STENA Forefunner. The Stena Forerunner operates primarily in the European ECA where new low sulphur fuel regulations went into effect on January 1, 2015. The CROE scrubbing systems aboard the Forerunner are scheduled to be on line in the first half of 2015.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Mitsubishi Kakoki Kaisha, Ltd. (MKK) have jointly developed a Hybrid SOx Scrubber System that efficiently removes sulfur oxides (SOx) from exhaust gas emitted by marine diesel engines. The Hybrid SOx Scrubber System is the first in Japan to comply with the more stringent SOx emission regulations that will take effect in designated emission control areas (ECA) in 2015. The system is capable of scrubbing exhaust gas from the combustion of fuels emitted from bunker heavy fuel oil to the level combusting more costly low-sulfur fuel oil.

Wärtsilä: Catalytic Converters for Multipurpose Icebreakers
Wärtsilä was contracted by Finland-based Arctia Offshore Oy to carry out modification work to two of the company's vessels. The contract was signed in September 2011. The turnkey project involves the fitting of combined Wärtsilä NOx Reducer (NOR) and Oxidation Catalysts (OXI) to the MSV Fennica and MSV Nordica, both of which are multi-functional vessels based on a modified icebreaker design. Demonstration Aboard the Maersk Taurus Containership. Belco Technologies Corporation (BELCO), a wholly owned subsidiary of DuPont, headquartered in Parsippany, N.J., USA, has reached an agreement with A.P. Moller – Maersk, headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, to design, manufacture and supply the BELCO advanced marine scrubbing system for demonstration on one of the auxiliary engines aboard the Maersk Taurus. The system will be designed to remain on board as a commercial installation following the successful demonstration.
