Baleària shipping company, based in Dénia and a world pioneer in the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel, has launched Marie Curie, its new smart ship with LNG engines.The launching ceremony took place at Cantiere Navale Visentini in Italy. The newbuilding is the company’s first ferry fueled by LNG that will operate in the Mediterranean.Marie Curie is one of two dual-fuel, gas-powered ferries being built at the yard, located near Venice. The sister vessel, Hypatia de Alejandria, is also nearing completion.

WinGD X-DF Runs on NG-VOC mix
WinGD and Wärtsilä Gas Systems have tested a NG-VOC (Natural Gas - Volatile Organic Compounds) fuel mix for the WinGD X-DF engine, selected to power two 125 000 dwt Shuttle Tankers for AET. Guests from AET, Statoil, OSM Maritime Group, Samsung Shipyard and Hyundai Heavy Industries-Engine & Machinery Division were on hand in Trieste, Italy, in March, to witness the successful test of a WinGD X-DF engine running on a NG-VOC mix. The test demonstrated the engine’s capabilities under various load scenarios with up to 20% VOC in the fuel ratio.
World’s First LNG-fueled Bulk Carrier Delivered
Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) and ILSHIN LOGISTICS delivered the world’s first LNG-fueled bulk carrier under the dual-class of Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Korean Register. The 50,000 dwt bulk carrier has also been verified to be in compliance with the International Gas Fuel (IGF) Code. The vessel is the result of a collaboration project, announced in July 2016, to develop the first in a new generation of environmentally-friendly LNG-fueled bulk carriers. The ship has a Type ‘C’ LNG fuel tank with a capacity of 500m³, made of austenitic high manganese steel and located on the aft mooring deck.

Knutsen Orders Four ME-GI Engines
Norwegian operator Knutsen OAS Shipping has ordered four MAN B&W 5G70ME-GI engines with EGR systems in connection with the construction of two 180,000 m3 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker newbuildings. Upon delivery in 2020, the vessels will transport cargoes worldwide for two Spanish utility companies. According to the engine’s manufacturer MAN Diesel & Turbo, the order follows the increasingly popular path initiated by Gas Natural Fenosa, the multinational Spanish group that was the pioneer in adopting ME-GI technology in an order for four LNG tankers in 2013.

The first of three new dual fuel RAstar 4000-DF class extreme escort tugs, the Dux, has been delivered to Østensjø Rederi AS by Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Gondán S.A. LNG-fueled Bulker Ordered from Korea
Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) has signed a contract to build a 50,000 dwt bulk carrier with ILSHIN LOGISTICS. The project is a collaboration between POSCO and ILSHIN LOGISTICS to develop the first in a new generation of ships for greener shipping. The ship represents a significant step-up for the industry as it is the largest bulk carrier ever ordered to use LNG as fuel. Crowley Selects Fuel Supplier for LNG Containerships
Crowley Puerto Rico Services, Inc. has selected Eagle LNG Partners as the liquefied natural gas (LNG)-supplier for the company’s new LNG-powered, Commitment Class ships, which will be delivered in 2017 for use in the U.S. mainland to Puerto Rico trade. To support Crowley’s LNG needs, Eagle LNG will build a natural gas liquefaction plant (LNG plant) offering a capacity of 200,000 gallons per day (87,000 gallons per day initially) in Jacksonville.
