Two LNG Dual-Fuel DP Shuttle Tankers Unveiled

AET, a petroleum tanker owner and operator, has named its newest vessels, two of the world's first LNG Dual-Fuel Dynamic Positioning Shuttle Tankers (DPSTs). Building the Most Powerful Otto Cycle Engine in the World

WinGD has released a time-lapse video of the build of a 12X92DF engine, built by CSSC-MES Diesel Co., Ltd. (CMD) in Lingang, Shanghai.This twelve-cylinder version of the 92cm bore X-DF dual fuel engine from WinGD, is set to be the largest and most powerful Otto cycle gas and dual-fuel engine ever built and will bring a new level of environmental sustainability to the containership segment.The engine build has taken approximately 3,125 person days, which totals to 25,000-man hours. The engine weighs over 2,100 tons and has received parts from more than 15 countries.

First European Dual-Fuel Dredger Conversion

Damen Shiprepair & Conversion has signed off on the conversion of a dredger to dual-fuel operation on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and marine gas oil (MGO), and which is powered by MAN 35/44DF engines.The conversion of the ‘Samuel de Champlain’ is the first of its kind in Europe and is part of an EU-supported initiative to promote LNG propulsion in short-sea vessels operating along the European Atlantic coast.The 117m, 8,500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger is owned by Rouen-based GIE Dragages-Ports and operated by Port of Nantes-Saint-Nazaire.

WinGD Celebrates Milestone Order for 100th X-DF Engine

Only five years after the launch of the X-DF engine, WinGD has announced they have secured an order for their 100th X-DF engine. The award-winning technology developed by WinGD has demonstrated, on tests and engines currently in operation, that it offers stable combustion, inherently low NOx and greenhouse gas emissions and high overall system efficiencies as well as reliable and safe gas operation. GasLog LTD, one of the early supporters of the X-DF technology, has eight LNG carriers, each with 2x 5X72DF main engines in its fleet with three new builds recently entering commercial operations.

HHI to Build First LPG-Powered Dual-Fuel Engine VLGC

Hanjin Heavy Industries (HHI) has announced that it will construct  two Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) in their Philippines Facilities for EXMAR, the Belgian integrated gas shipping company. The 80,000 m3 newbuildings will each be powered by an individual MAN B&W 6G60ME-LGIP Mk9.5 engine. MAN Diesel & Turbo reports that the VLGCs have chosen LPG as a fuel option so they can comply with the new IMO sulphur-emission legislation due to enter force in 2020. Engine delivery to the yard has been scheduled for December 2019. Upon construction, the carriers will be chartered by Statoil.

Shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries announced it will construct two 80,000 m3 very large gas carriers (VLGC) at its Philippines facilities for Belgian integrated gas shipping company EXMAR. Upon construction, the carriers will be chartered by Statoil. The newbuildings will each be powered by an individual MAN B&W 6G60ME-LGIP Mk9.5 engine. MAN Diesel & Turbo reports liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was chosen as a fuel option so the vessels will comply with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) sulphur-emission legislation due to enter force in 2020.

A New Breed of Tug

When markets expand niches are created, goes the logic. For builders of tugs, that market is “floating gas” and the expanding use of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, as a fuel. In support of LNG, there’ll be more oceangoing tug duty — the new floating storage and regasification units, or FSRUs, mean busier LNG carriers, and LNG cargo owners have an interest in tug escorts that share their “carbon footprint”. Still, new emissions rules offer ways to keep using refinery products, and the work of master tug designers suggests the new breeds of tugs are about more than fuel.

Engines Selected for CMA CGM’s LNG Mega Ships

WinGD X-DF engines will power CMA CGM’s record setting containerships. French shipping line CMA CGM has chosen WinGD’s largest, 92 cm bore, dual-fuel low-speed engine to power its series of groundbreaking box ships – presently the largest on order globally, and the first ultra large container vessels with capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG). The series of nine ultra-large 22,000 TEU capacity containerships will be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd.

LNG: Maritime's 'Fuel of the Future'

As the maritime world increasingly mulls alternative fuel and propulsion solutions, Maritime Reporter & Engineering News discusses the path ahead for (liquefied natural gas (LNG) with Timo Koponen, VP, Flow & Gas Solutions, Gas and LNG, Wärtsilä. The road toward acceptance of LNG as marine fuel has neither been short nor straight, but anyone who knows this market could not reasonably expect anything different. “Even though it (LNG) is very well proven both from the technology side and its benefit to the environment, nevertheless there are too many people who still doubt,” said Koponen.

Germany Orders LNG Fueled Research Ship

The Fassmer shipyard in Germany is currently cinstructing a new research vessel to be owned by Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH), the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. The new 75-meter-long ship, the Atair, will replace her 30 year old namesake, and will be the first German research vessel operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel. The engines for the new vessel will be supplied by Wärtsilä, who will also supply exhaust cleaning systems based on selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and the LNGPac system for complete fuel gas handling.

Wärtsilä 34DF Engines Certified EPA Tier III

Wärtsilä said it has been awarded model year 2017 certification of emissions compliance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engine family. The EPA Tier III certification and the corresponding EIAPP certificate were both issued in March 2017. The Tier III certification of conformity covers the Wärtsilä 34DF engines manufactured from the date of issue until the end of 2017. These are the first Category 3 Tier III certificates issued by the EPA to any manufacturer.
