Jotun:ISO 19030 standard can make $30 bln impact on the industry
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has now published the long-awaited ISO 19030, a new standard conceived to measure changes in ship-specific hull and propeller performance. According to Jotun, which has led the industry in the standard’s development, the move has the potential to reduce the industry’s green house gas emissions by 10%, while saving operators up to USD 30 billion in annual energy costs. Wärtsilä Developing Hybrid Tug for Brazil
Wärtsilä said it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a new environmentally friendly tug design for a new port facility being built in the Brazilian city of São Mateus. The MoU, signed with Petrocity, parent company of a new port facility, will see Wärtsilä develop a harbor tug design based on its recently launched Wärtsilä HYTug, which features hybrid propulsion and energy storage using batteries. Rolls-Royce Wins Order for "Enviroship"
Rolls-Royce received its first order for vessels based on the Group’s award-winning Environship concept. Rolls Royce will design and provide integrated power and propulsion systems for two technologically advanced cargo vessels, which have been purchased by Norwegian transportation company, Nor Lines AS. These highly efficient ships incorporate a striking wave piercing bow, gas powered engines and an innovative Promas propulsion system, which combined, significantly improves the overall performance of the vessel, increasing fuel efficiency by up to 18 per cent.
Green Tech Wins RoPax Scrubber Deal
Green Tech Marine has won a contract to deliver 21 exhaust gas cleaning systems (“scrubbers”) to an undisclosed ship-owner in first quarter 2015. By using Green Tech Marine scrubbers, ship owners can continue to operate on heavy fuel oil instead of more costly marine gas oil, while staying below the strict IMO requirements regarding sulphur emission. Sulphur oxides cause a wide variety of health and environmental impacts. With asthma being the largest children chronic disease in the Western world, authorities are addressing this issue through legislation.
Finland's Bore to Install ClassNK Efficiency Software
Shipping company Bore Ltd. to install ClassNK-NAPA GREEN ship efficiency software aboard their 13,625 dwt Ro-Ro vessel 'M/V Bore Song'. This announcement follows on from sea trials last year aboard sister ship M/V Bore Sea which proved that NAPA operational software had led to a 5.8% reduction in fuel consumption. The ClassNK-NAPA GREEN software system is a joint development between Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), the world’s largest ship classification society, and NAPA, the leading software house for ship design and operations.

First LNG-powered EcoLiner Launched
Damen Shipyards Group launched the first LNG-powered Damen EcoLiner inland shipping tanker at its Romanian yard in early February. The EcoLiner, developed to deliver fuel economy for inland shipping operators while at the same time cutting emissions, features a design that combines conventional, proven engineering with sustainable innovations, including the world’s first installations of the ACES Air-Lubricated Hull, a gas-electrical shaft propulsion system and one of the first Van der Velden FLEX Tunnel installations. According to Damen, the pioneering vessel reduces fuel costs by up to 25%.

Corvus Energy to provide world’s largest ever hybrid propulsion marine battery pack for a Scandline diesel-electric ferry conversion. Corvus will provide Scandline with a 2.7MWh power pack consisting of an AT6500 advanced lithium polymer battery system for a conversion in an existing diesel electric ferry that delivers significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved maintenance costs and optimized engine performance. White House Honors Chiarello for LNG Efforts
TOTE, Inc. President and CEO Anthony Chiarello is among 11 honored by the White House as 2014 transportation industry “Champions of Change.” Chiarello was chosen for his role in leading the U.S. maritime industry toward natural gas as fuel. TOTE is building the first natural gas-powered containerships in the world to serve Puerto Rico and is converting its ships in Alaska to natural gas; TOTE is the first in the United States to convert its fleet to liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Exhaust Gas Scrubbers, Not MGO, for 'Pride of America'
Green Tech Marine contracted to deliver four of its scrubber units to the Norwegian Cruise Line ship. The scrubbers will be installed in March during a dry dock in Pearl Harbor Naval shipyard. They will replace the ships silencers and clean the exhaust of four, 8 MW engines, in total 32 MW, in what the manufacturers say is the biggest marine scrubber installation in the world at this time. First LNG Fuelled Tug for Middle East by Wärtsilä
Drydocks World (DDW) based in Dubai, UAE, has contracted Wärtsilä to design and supply the propulsion and other equipment for a new harbour tug that will operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG). This will be the first harbour tug in the Middle East region to operate on gas. The order was signed in November. The 29-meter-long tug is the first of a series of nine such vessels to be built and operated by DDW. The project is part of a green initiative launched by the Dubai government, and is intended to set an example for promoting environmental sustainability throughout the region.

LNG looms as the bridge to a ‘zero emissions’ future for shipping. The advent of industry wide tightening of allowable sulfur emissions is getting nearer. Suddenly, with the deadline now just one year away, the countdown clock will very soon be ticking much louder. Simply stated, the cap on allowable sulfur content in marine fuels, presently at 3.5 percent in many geographical regions, will be reduced to 0.5 percent in January 2020. The 0.1 percent sulfur cap, already in effect since 2015 in coastal Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) in Europe and North America, will remain.
Yara Acquires Majority Stake in Green Tech Marine
Yara International will expand its emissions control business by acquiring a majority 63% stake in Green Tech Marine (GTM), a sulphur oxide (SOX) scrubber supplier to the marine industry. “New International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations are being implemented, and combining GTM with our existing Nitrogen Oxide (NOX) portfolio will help the maritime industry cleanse their emissions and be compliant,” said Yves Bonte, Senior Vice President and head of Yara’s Industrial Segment.
