Methanol-Fueled Chem Tanker Delivered to NYK

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Group) has taken delivery of Takaroa Sun, a methanol carrier equipped with two-stroke dual-fuel engine tech that allows the vessel to be powered by methanol. Built in South Korea at Hyundai MIPO Dockyard, the new ship was funded through NYK’s green financing initiative established to support environment-friendly projects.Takaroa Sun was built with the MAN Energy Solutions second-generation B&W ME-LGIM two-stroke dual-fuel engine that runs on both methanol and conventional marine fuel.

RENK Wins Order for Hybrid Drive “MARHY”

At the end of March 2019, the maritime sales team of RENK’s Rheine plant managed to win its first new construction project for the maritime hybrid system called MARHY. This system enables ships with 2-stroke engines to efficiently generate on-board power supply by using the main engine (PTO-operation). In addition, a fully electric drive (PTH- operation) is available for zones with low emissions zones (port areas) and for emergencies.The newbuild is a 30,000 cbm LNG carrier owned by Knutsen OAS. It is equipped with a 6,00 kW strong 2-stroke main engine and is the first ofthis size.

Wärtsilä to Equip Knutsen LNG Carrier

Wärtsilä said it will provide an integrated propulsion and cargo handling solution for a new 30,000-cubic-meter liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier being built at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in South Korea on behalf of Norway based Knutsen OAS Shipping.Under a 12-year long term charter, the vessel, expected to be delivered during the first half of 2021, will be operated by Knutsen and chartered to Edison S.p.A, an Italian energy services provider. TMC to Provide Smart Air Compressors to Hyundai Mipo Dockyard

TMC Compressors of the Seas (TMC) has signed a contract to supply an environmentally friendly Smart Air marine compressed air system to the world’s first HFO-fuelled (heavy fuel oil) TIR III compliant ethylene carriers.TMC will provide the Smart Air compressors to Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, which is responsible for building the two new 21,000 cbm ethylene carriers to Norwegian LPG and petrochemical shipping company Solvang ASA (Solvang).In a separate contract, TMC will provide 2 x N2 (nitrogen) feed air compressors to each of the two vessels’ on-board N2 system.

Kongsberg Completes 10,000th AutoChief Propulsion Control System FAT

The 10,000th Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) for Kongsberg Maritime’s AutoChief propulsion control system took place at Kongsberg Maritime Korea in Busan on Friday, April 27. The AutoChief 600 system tested will be installed on a new LEG carrier featuring a 2-stroke MAN B&W engine being built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (Hull 8258), for owner Solvang ASA. MAN Powers World’s First LNG-fueled Bulk Carrier

The world’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled bulk carrier, the 50,000 dwt newbuild Ilshin Green Iris, is powered by state-of-the-art technology from MAN Diesel & Turbo. World’s First LNG-fueled Bulk Carrier Delivered

Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) and ILSHIN LOGISTICS delivered the world’s first LNG-fueled bulk carrier under the dual-class of Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Korean Register. The 50,000 dwt bulk carrier has also been verified to be in compliance with the International Gas Fuel (IGF) Code. The vessel is the result of a collaboration project, announced in July 2016, to develop the first in a new generation of environmentally-friendly LNG-fueled bulk carriers. The ship has a Type ‘C’ LNG fuel tank with a capacity of 500m³, made of austenitic high manganese steel and located on the aft mooring deck.

Four Methanol-fueled Vessels Ordered in Korea

Four new vessels powered by methanol fuel will be built in Korea following investment from maritime industry stakeholders Waterfront Shipping Company Ltd. (WFS), Marinvest/Skagerack Invest (Marinvest), IINO Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. (IINO), Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (Mitsui) and the NYK Group (NYK). The four 49,000 dead weight tonne newbuilds will be built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for delivery in 2019. They will be powered by MAN B&W ME-LGI two-stroke dual-fuel engines that can run on methanol, fuel oil, marine diesel oil or gas oil.

Hyundai Heavy Industry (HHI) Group, with the support of Lloyd's Register (LR), is responding to the increasing  interest in the development of the global supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG), following the introduction of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) NOx and SOx emission limitations, by being at the forefront of developing innovative ship designs. Wärtsilä Scrubbers for Korean Ferry Newbuild

Wärtsilä said it has been contracted to supply its exhaust gas cleaning system for a new Korean ferry being built for Weidong Ferry at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. The system will consist of two 13 MW Open Loop V-SOx Scrubbers specifically optimized for the new vessel, a 31,000 gross tonnage RoPax ferry to be operated by Weidong Ferry between Korea and China. The contract with Wärtsilä, which was booked in January 2017, will see the first Wärtsilä scrubber system installed where the shipyard, the owners and the vessel's operational area are all in Korea.

Alfa Laval Methanol Booster Systems Excel in over 4500 Hours of Operation

Industry Collaborates for LNG Bunkering Study

Lloyd’s Register (LR), Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) have signed a joint development project (JDP) to produce a ship-to-ship LNG bunkering compatibility study. This will comprehensively review the design requirements between 6.6K LNG bunkering ships and 14K TEU LNG-fuelled container ships with the goal of verifying safe ship-to-ship LNG bunkering. The study aims to help all stakeholders with interest in LNG as fuel to envisage a clear picture of possible options for LNG supply infrastructure.

LNG-fueled Bulker Ordered from Korea

Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) has signed a contract to build a 50,000 dwt bulk carrier with ILSHIN LOGISTICS. The project is a collaboration between POSCO and ILSHIN LOGISTICS to develop the first in a new generation of ships for greener shipping. The ship represents a significant step-up for the industry as it is the largest bulk carrier ever ordered to use LNG as fuel. When delivered in the fourth quarter of 2017, the ship will transport limestone cargoes in the Korean coastal trade for steelmaker POSCO.

MAN's ME-GI Engine for LNG-powered Bulker

Korean shipowner ILSHIN and HMD (Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co., Ltd.) have signed a shipbuilding contract for a 50,000 dwt bulk carrier. Notably, the vessel will be powered by an MAN B&W 6G50ME-C9.5-GI engine, to be built by HHI-EMD who will also supply the ME-GI and fuel gas supply system. POSCO, the multinational steel-making company headquartered in Pohang, South Korea, has already agreed to charter the newbuilding upon delivery, and will use the vessel to transport limestone for its operations.
