MTU Expands in India with Engine Test Cell Facility

The Tognum Group company MTU India opened a new engine test cell facility at its MTU India Service Center in Tathawade, Pune (India). The test cell’s dynamometer system is capable of testing all MTU engines up to Series 4000 engines in the range from 300 to 4,300kW, as per MTU test protocol, and for all applications. In February 2010, MTU India opened its new head office for sales and service operations in Pune. The addition of the new engine test cell facility to the MTU India Service Centre brings a new phase in MTU India’s ability to meet its Indian customers’ needs in the region.

GRSE to Build MTU Engines in India

agreement between Rolls Royce and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) will see final assembly of MTU Series 4000 engines in India. Under the terms of the deal, the 12V and 16V 4000 M90 type engines will be assembled in GRSE’s Diesel Engine Plant in Ranchi, while an option for the future local production of parts was also agreed upon. Volvo Penta India Wins Large Order

Volvo Penta India won an order for 40 D12MH-350 engines from Sesa Goa for powering their iron ore barges which will ply in Mandovi & Zuari Rivers in Goa, on west coast of India. Volvo Penta is the first imported engine manufacturer in India to offer IRS (India Register of Shipping) approved engines. Sesa Goa is India’s largest producer and exporter of iron ore in the private sector. As a first phase of their fleet expansion plan Sesa Goa will induct 20 barges powered by Volvo Penta 2 x D12MH-350 engines. The IRS inspected engines will be delivered from October 2010 to March 2011.

The continuing slump in global shipping is translating into brisk business for scrap yards at Gujarat's coastal town of Alang in India. Alang, which receives one out of every two ships destined for breaking, has retained the top slot amid stiff competition from Pakistan, Bangladesh and China, reports TNN. GE to Power, Propel Indian Diesel-Electric Research Ship

India continues to grow as a global center of technological excellence, accounting for 10% of research and development and home to five of the top 10 science and technology schools in Asia. Govt of India, having a network of more than 50 laboratories deeply engaged in developing a range of technologies from electronic and computer sciences, through life sciences and materials, to marine research and development, will invest in a new scientific research platform vessel to be built by Bharati Shipyard, based in Mumbai.

Rolls-Royce to Design & Power Buoy Tender for India

Rolls-Royce has secured an £8-million contract to design and power a highly specialised buoy tender vessel for India. The vessel will be built at the Cochin Shipyard Ltd. in India, and is due for delivery in 2015, to operate in remote waters off the east coast of India and around the Andaman & Nicobar Islands maintaining and replacing navigational aids and buoys. The buoy tender vessel is a Rolls-Royce UT 755 S, which is a development of the well proven UT 755 series, and designed to operate safely in the most challenging conditions.

Indian FPSO Finance Secured by Malaysian Operator

Bumi Armada Berhad secures syndicated Indian banks term loan facilities of up to US$276.4-million for FPSO 'Armada Sterling'. Malaysia-based international offshore oil and gas services provider, company Bumi Armada Berhad announced today that its jointly controlled entity, Armada D1 Pte. Ltd. (Armada D1) has secured syndicated term loan facilities of up to USD276.4 million (facility) from Allahabad Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, UCO Bank and Union Bank of India.

Indian Navy Dredger Completes Successful First Year

In mid-April of 2016, the Indian Navy’s grab hopper dredger, Dredger-1 was preparing to depart its birth shipyard following a comprehensive one-year warrantee review. Tebma Shipyards Ltd., Senior Vice President M. Balasubramaniam explained that the 44.15 by 12.2-meter vessel was designed to meet precise deepening requirements around docks and port installations and in riverine or other places where deepening of specific areas is required. The vessel has a 320-HP Cummins-855-powered forward-mounted crane supplied by Titagarth Wagons.

Small-size Diesels in India – MHI Increases Stake in JV

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has increased its stake in MHI-VST Diesel Engines Pvt. Ltd. (MVDE), a small-size diesel engine manufacturing and marketing company jointly established with V.S.T. Tillers Tractors Ltd. (VTTL), a power tiller and tractor manufacturer in India. In response to growing recognition of the MHI brand in the Indian market, MHI, by increasing its capital stake in MVDE, will ensure that the JV has sufficient financial strength both to accommodate large-scale business transactions and to further expand its product lineup.

Boilers Below Par in Latest Indian Aircraft Carrier Trial

Seven out of eight steam boilers of the propulsion machinery were found defective during sea trials of 'INS Vikramaditya', delivery date put back. The Vikramaditya, formerly the Russian Navy's Admiral Gorshkov, is to be handed over to India from a Russia shipyard after ongoing sea trials following a much-delayed refit. According to the latest agreements, it was to have been handed over on December 4, but the deadline has been postponed again until October 2013. The problems started when the vessel tried to gain maximum speed.

SCI: Putting Expansion on Hold

As the world economy sputters, so too do the expansion plans for India's state-owned Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), which according to a report on the will hold up on its plan to issue new tenders for new vessels. The company is already taking delivery of about 10 vessels this year, mostly bulk carriers, though there is overcapacity in the market. China Shipyard Delivers Panamax Bulker to SCI

The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI) accepts bulk carrier 'Vishva Vijay' from STX Shipbuilding, Dalian, China. The vessel is the third in a series of four Panamax bulk carriers ordered by SCI from STX (Dalian) Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., China. These vessels are of higher capacity, over 80,000 dwt each, compared with conventional Panamax vessels which are of about 75,000 dwt. Russian Shipyard Delivers Indian Navy Warship

The second of three stealth frigates, the 'Tarkash', is handed over to the Indian Navy by the Yantar Shipyard, Kaliningrad. Russia and India signed a $1.6 billion contract on construction of three modified Krivak III class (also known as Talwar class) guided missile frigates for India in 2006. The first frigate, INS Teg, joined the Indian Navy on April 27. The last in the series of three frigates, Trikand, currently undergoes dock trials and after it completes sea trials in the Baltic Sea will join the Indian Navy in the summer of 2013.

Wartsila India Signs Pact with CSL

Wartsila India, the Indian arm of Finland-based Wartsila Corporation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) for setting up a containerised self-sufficient workshop. As per the MOU, Wartsila plans to locate a containerised self-sufficient workshop within the premises of CSL to cater primarily to propeller blade metallurgical repairs and engine component repairs. Wartsila also plans to support CSL with comprehensive engine services, propulsion services and electrical and automation services based on the requirements, said a press release.

Submarines – Russia Offers India Air-independent Propulsion Systems

Russia has offered to help India build air-independent (closed cycle) propulsion systems for installation in Amur 1650 class submarines and also to equip future possible joint Indian-Russian built vessels, according to  Viktor Komardin, the deputy head of Rosoboronexport's delegation at the recent Defexpo Indian defense show. The Amur 1650 is one of several contenders, including the Scorpene (France), Type 214 (Germany) and S-80 (Spain) in a tender for the Indian Navy for six subamrines with a total value of $11.8 billion.

Fincantieri Launches Indian Navy Ship

Fincantieri’s shipyard in Sestri Ponente (Genova) launched the second of two fleet tankers ordered by the Indian Navy, with delivery scheduled by the end of the next year. Present at the ceremony were Debabrata Saha, ambassador for the Republic of India in Italy and Alberto Maestrini, head of Fincantieri Naval Vessels Business Unit. First announced at Euronaval in 2008, the order is the first surface vessel India has ever made to a European company and followed a selection procedure with strong international competitors, especially from Russia and Korea.

Colombo Dockyard to build Six

According to a report on, Sri Lanka's state-owned Colombo Dockyard, won six new shipbuilding projects from Singapore and India. One of the projects is to build four units of 78M Multi-purpose platform supply Vessels to its Singapore Client. Two units of 400-passenger, 250T Cargo Vessels are also to be built for an Indian client.  (Source:
