A Case for Propeller Guards & Cutters

As I was preparing for Thanksgiving dinner I put on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. While Indiana Jones and Doctor Elsa Schneider were being chased by the Brotherhood of the Cruciform sword through Venice and their boat was neatly shredded by the propellers of a larger vessel, it had me thinking of how much propeller technology has changed over the years. And how hopefully Indiana’s boat did not actually damage that vessel’s propeller. Recently an article passed though my news feed about the first 3D printed propeller. This is indicative of the direction the industry is taking.

US Navy: Bigger is Better, but at What Cost?

The U.S. Navy has a balanced fleet, but it wants to grow bigger and better. Will the budget allow both? Maritime Reporter's March 2017 cover story on the U.S. Navy was all about the numbers. There exists several plans to grow the fleet beyond the current number of 308 ships, the Mitre recommendation of 414 ships, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment 340-ship proposal, and the Navy’s decision to grow the fleet to 355 ships, and the Trump administration’s 350. With so many numbers being bandied about, there are even more suggestions on how to get there.

Forrest Lucas is a proverbial ‘rags-to-riches’ story, emerging from rural Indiana to build a corporate empire. From truck driver to truck fleet owner to oil and media magnate – including naming rights to an NFL stadium – Lucas is the ‘every man’ tycoon with eyes on the commercial maritime market. Talk to Forrest Lucas for five minutes and it is easy to see that his claims to be a ‘regular guy’ – placing honesty and integrity at the forefront of all dealings – is earnest. Rising from modest means, early on Lucas combined an entrepreneurial spirit, a hard work ethic and an inventive mind.

Scania Bolsters Inland River Distribution

NRE Power Systems, who currently represents Scania’s latest marine platform: 13- and 16-liter engines for auxiliary and propulsion applications; and currently distributes them in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky and Texas, will now represent West Virginia, southern Ohio, southern Indiana and southern Illinois.   NRE is also a distributor for Scania industrial engines and distributes them in Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi.

Rolls-Royce Power Package for USS Zumwalt

Rolls-Royce announced delivery of the twin fixed pitch propellers to Bath Iron Works for installation on the U.S. Navy’s most modern surface combatant, the future USS Zumwalt, the first ship of the DDG 1000 multi-mission destroyer class. The provision of the twin fixed pitch propellers marks the completion of the power and propulsion system delivery from Rolls-Royce, following the MT30 main turbine generator sets and the RR4500 auxiliary turbine generator sets, which have already been installed and tested.

Cummins' Carter to Retire

Cummins Inc. announced that Distribution Business President Pamela Carter, the first woman to lead one of the company's four main business units, will retire April 1. Carter, who became Indiana's first African American woman Attorney General in 1993, has been with Cummins since 1997. She initially served as the Company's Vice President - General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. Carter then held several key positions within Cummins Fleetguard before leading Cummins Filtration from 2005 to 2007. She has been President of the Distribution Business Unit since 2007.

Cummins Profit Up; Natgas Engine Demand Weak

Cummins Inc posted higher-than-expected quarterly profit on Tuesday, lifted by strong sales of its vehicle components in North America, Europe and China. But the company, which also makes natural gas engines used to generate electricity, said global demand for that equipment "remains weak" and was considering a restructuring that could cuts costs in the long term but may reduce earnings by as much as $40 million. The Columbus, Indiana-based maker of diesel engines and fuel and emission controls reported third-quarter net profit of $423 million…

Cat to Power Ferries for 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro

Caterpillar Marine and Cat Dealer Pon Power announced the first Cat 3512C marine generator sets with Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) have been selected to power Assessoria Transporte Aquaviaro fast ferries for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 28 Cat generator sets will be installed on seven aluminum-hull fast ferries, with 14x Cat 3512 generator sets and 14x Cat 9 generator sets providing prime and auxiliary power. Each 3512 generator set will provide 1,550 eKW at 60 Hz of rated power.

CAT 3500 D-F Gensets Power Rio Fast Ferries

Laborde Now a Steyr Motors Distributor

To help increase business and provide even better service for its customers, Laborde Products has been chosen as a Steyr Motors distributor. The company will offer sales, service and support throughout Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin. Laborde will also offer dealer support along the Eastern seaboard of Mexico, from the Texas border to Cancun. Steyr Motors M1 Monoblock engines are known for the lowest weight in class at less than 1.2 kg/hp and the highest power density, up to 92 hp/ltr.

Caterpillar Secures Complete Propulsion Systems Order

Caterpillar Marine announced that Cat power and propulsion solutions have been selected to provide an optimized tug package for a 55T ASD tug new build for Remolcadores Marracoi SL (REMARSL). Two Cat 3512C EPA Tier 2 propulsion engines have been selected to power the tug as well as 2x  MTA 523FP Azimuth thrusters. Each Cat 3512C marine propulsion engine will provide 2x1765 kw @1800 rpm of rated power. Auxiliary power will be delivered through 2 x Cat C9 engines. The vessel will be constructed at Freinaval shipyards in Spain. Cat dealer Finanzauto led Caterpillar efforts on the project.

Hartzell Launches New Rapid Ship Program

Hartzell Air Movement explains that the program includes numerous axial and centrifugal fans capable of being installed in many different applications such as wastewater, marine, warehouse ventilation, and food processing. Some of the fans in the program can be shipped in as little as 48 hours. Other fans allow the customer to customize a range of motors or accessories. Sean Steimle, President of Hartzell Air Movement said: “The program is designed to quickly ship stock fans to customers but also flexible enough to allow customization of Hartzell products.

Five Cat Engines to Power World’s First LNG-Hybrid Barge

Caterpillar Marine announced the first shipment of Cat 3500 series marine gas engines from its Lafayette, Indiana manufacturing facility. Five Cat G3516 marine engines were selected to power the Becker Marine Systems subsidiary, Hybrid Port Energy, LNG-Hybrid Barge, the world’s first LNG-powered barge in the Port of Hamburg. The LNG-Hybrid barge will provide clean and efficient shore power to cold ironing cruise ships and serve as a backup power provider for the local Hamburg electric power and heat grid.

PPG Appoints McDonald VP, Fiber Glass

PPG Industries today announced the appointment of Kevin E. McDonald, as vice president, fiber glass, effective March 1. McDonald is currently PPG general manager, reinforcements, and leader for fiber glass in the Americas and EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). He will report to Viktor Sekmakas, PPG executive vice president, and continue to be based at the company’s Glass Business and Discovery Center in Harmar, Pa. McDonald will succeed Thomas P. Kerr, who will retire effective March 1.
