UK to Insist on Zero Emission Ships from 2025
Britain's government on Thursday said all new ships ordered from 2025 and aimed for its waters must be equipped with zero emission technology, as part of a new plan to cut maritime pollution.Britain last month announced a target to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, making it the first among the major G7 countries to set such a goal.As part of a new "Clean Maritime Plan" unveiled on Thursday, the government said ships ordered from 2025 onwards must have zero-emission capabilities.
Second Ferry Export for Wight Shipyard
UK shipbuilder Wight Shipyard Co has completed its second export order. The order placed by Ultramar, the largest ferry operator in Mexico, consists of two 37m fast ferries which will be transported to Cancun Mexico at the beginning of July.The critical issues for these newbuilds were timely delivery and the weight saving target that needed to be achieved. New Ferry the Red Kestrel Completed
Merseyside shipbuilder Cammell Laird has completed the building the $13 million ferry the Red Kestrel, for Isle of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel.The Red Kestrel, a new freight-only RoRo vessel, sailed away from Cammell Laird’s famous River Mersey shipyard following a nine-month build program. In total the project used 45 British supply chain businesses and generated 3000 man hours of work for Cammell Laird's apprentices. Cammell Laird further employed 200 direct workers, 200 sub-contractors and 10 apprentices on the contract.The Red Kestrel will operate between Southampton and Isle of Wight.
New Ferry for Red Funnel Floated Out
Cammell Laird recently floated out a new $13 million ferry built for Isle of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel.Dubbed Red Kestrel, the freight-only RoRo is slated to operate between Southampton and Isle of Wight, scheduled to join the fleet in May 2019 after finish and sea trials. Red Kestrel is Red Funnel’s first ship to be designed for freight traffic. As a freight vessel it is limited to 12 passengers and builtspecifically to provide additional year-round freight capacity for Red Funnel’s Southampton-East Cowes route, which currently handles 53% of all freight movements across the Solent.
New Red Funnel Catamaran with MTU Engines Ready for Operation
UK operator Red Funnel's 40-m, 277-passenger Red Jet 7 fast ferry will enter service in July after its commissioned in June. Built in the UK by the Wight Shipyard Co., Rolls-Royce supplied the four MTU 10V 2000 M72 engines to power the ferry. Powered by four 900 kW MTU Series 2000 engines, Red Jet 7 has a top speed of 38 knots while also meeting the IMO for Tier II certification.The aluminum catamaran is to join its sister ships Red Jet 6, Red Jet 4 and Red Jet 3 in plying between Southampton and the Isle of Wight.
Voith Completes First Major Marine Overhaul at New UK Facility
Voith Turbo, a manufacturer of a wide range of products for the marine industry, said it has completed its first major refurbishment project in a brand new U.K. facility. The complete overhaul of a 26-metric-ton Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) has been carried out for Red Funnel, the Isle of Wight ferry company based in Southampton, at Voith’s Croydon workshop. The refurbishment follows Voith’s investment in specially designed jigs, fixtures, machinery and lifting equipment capable of handling Voith Schneider propellers, gearboxes and other ancillaries.

Corvus Energy to Power UK Hybrid Ferry
Corvus Energy Inc. has announced that Wärtsilä, provider of ship machinery, propulsion and maneuvering solutions, has selected Corvus Energy as the supplier of the lithium ion based energy storage system (ESS) for a new hybrid ferry being built for UK based Wightlink Ferries. Wärtsilä Environmental Efficiency for Hybrid UK Ferry
A new ferry being built at the Cemre shipyard in Turkey for UK operator Wightlink will feature a comprehensive range of modern Wärtsilä equipment and systems to ensure a high level of environmental efficiency. In addition to conventional fuel, the new vessel will be the first ferry to utilzse Wärtsilä hybrid battery technology to improve efficiency, reduce the exhaust emissions and lower the noise level. The scope includes four 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 20 generating sets, electrical and automation (E&A) systems, and a sanitary discharge system.
Shemara Refit Delivers Fast Ferry
Built by Shemara Refit LLP at its Isle of Wight shipyard, Red Jet 6 is Red Funnel’s largest and most innovative high-speed vessel yet. Named by HRH The Princess Royal at a ceremony in Cowes on July 4, 2016, the new craft is significant as it is the first high speed ferry to be built in Britain in over 16 years. Red Funnel Catamaran Powered by MTU Engines
The latest addition to the British Red Funnel ferry fleet, Red Jet 6, completed first sea trials in June 2016 and will go into service in July. The high-speed catamaran ferry was built in Britain by Shemara Refit on the Isle of Wight with Rolls-Royce supplying four MTU Type 10V 2000 M72 engines and ZF Type 3050D gearboxes. Red Jet 6 is the most modern vessel in the Red Funnel fleet. Powered by four 900 kilowatt Series 2000 MTU engines, the catamaran is capable of service speeds up to 38 knots and has twice as many engines as it’s three sister ships which are also powered by MTU.

Two Perkins 4.4TWGM engines have been supplied to G&M TEX Ltd which has packaged them into generators. Rolls-Royce Water Jets for Windfarm Support Vessels
Rolls-Royce said it has secured a contract to supply water jets for three wind farm support vessels to be built by South Boats IOW for the offshore wind transfer vessel operator Seacat Services. In what Rolls-Royce called one of the biggest orders made for wind farm workboats, one 24-meter and two 26-meter aluminum catamarans, each featuring two Rolls-Royce 56A3 stainless steel water jets, will be used to transfer people and cargo to the growing number of offshore wind farms around the coast of Europe.

The speed sailing boat smashes the current record in Walvis Bay, off the coast of Namibia. The new world record of 59.23 knots (109kph) set the best average time over 500m and broke the previous mark of 55.65 knots with a peak speed of 63 knots (119kph). Two days later the team improved this speed with a 59.38 knot run which peaked at exactly 120kph (64.78 knots). During the same run the team also smashed the nautical mile world record* with an average of over 55 knots. The ink was barely dry on the first record.
New Standard in Propulsion Efficiency and Onboard Comfort
According to the manufacturer, the propulsion system has performed convincingly all along the line and surpassed the expectations of her owner, the Welsh company Turbine Transfers Ltd, a subsidiary of Holyhead Towing Company. The VLJs are the main propulsion system of the DNV Classed 21m offshore service catamaran, which was designed for Turbine Transfers by BMT Nigel Gee and built by AMC. The Crew Transport Vessel will take service technicians to offshore wind farms at sites all around Europe, initially at the Westernmost Rough site off the Humber for Dong Energy.
Trearddur Bay Completes Sea Trials
BMT Nigel Gee Ltd, a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has announced that windfarm support vessel Trearddur Bay, its latest design for Turbine Transfers, has successfully completed sea trials in the Solent, achieving 31 knots with 8 metric tons DWT. With sea trials completed Trearddur Bay has immediately started work for Dong Energy. Built by Aluminium Marine Consultants (AMC) on the Isle of Wight, Trearddur Bay was launched in December 2014. The vessel is 21m long with a beam of 7.0m and utilises BMT’s well proven catamaran hull form.
