RENK Wins Order for Hybrid Drive “MARHY”

At the end of March 2019, the maritime sales team of RENK’s Rheine plant managed to win its first new construction project for the maritime hybrid system called MARHY. This system enables ships with 2-stroke engines to efficiently generate on-board power supply by using the main engine (PTO-operation). In addition, a fully electric drive (PTH- operation) is available for zones with low emissions zones (port areas) and for emergencies.The newbuild is a 30,000 cbm LNG carrier owned by Knutsen OAS. It is equipped with a 6,00 kW strong 2-stroke main engine and is the first ofthis size.

Upgraded OPV Delivered to Malta

Having undergone six months of upgrading activities at Fincantieri’s Genoa drydocking facility, Offshore Patrol Vessel P61 has been delivered to the Armed Forces of Malta. The upgrade, which aimed to improve the vessel’s reaction capability, included the installation of a new main propulsion plant, other machinery and equipment as well as the overhaul of most of the ship’s onboard systems. Fincantieri Launch Large Patrol Boat

The first of two multi-purpose vessels for the Italian Coast Guard was launched at Fincantieri's Castellammare di Stabia (Naples) Shipyard. Ships of this class are designed to operate in open seas in particularly bad weather conditions and will be used for search and rescue, anti-pollution and fire-fighting missions and to control illegal immigration. Accommodation Vessel Hired for Concordia Salvage Support

Ferguson Group’s accommodation service vessel, 'ASV Pioneer', deployed in the Mediterranean on a six-month contract with salvors Titan-Micoperi. The new contract, with Titan-Micoperi, is for the ASV Pioneer to provide a support role to the salvage operation including provision of accommodation for up to 90 team members, plus deck space for specialist equipment for the salvage operation. Concordia Captain Files Wrongful Dismissal Claim

Dismissed by Costa Cruises following the wrecking of his ship off the Italian coast, Capt. Schettino has sued for wrongful dismissal. Italian Francesco Schettino was not only fired by Costa Cruises but is accused by prosecutors of causing the accident by sailing the luxury cruiser liner too close to shore. The Naples-born captain has always acknowledged making mistakes once it became clear that the 144,400-tonne Costa Concordia was in trouble, but has protested he was not the only one who should be blamed for the tragedy, reports GMA News/Reuters. Siemens to Equip Italian Coast Guard

The Italian shipyard Cantieri Navali Megaride has recently commissioned Siemens to equip a 65-m-long offshore supply vessel from the Italian coast guard with the Siship EcoProp hybrid propulsion system. EcoProp includes two main gear units, electric propulsion motors and the hybrid propulsion control system. Diesel engines are combined with electric drive components, each of which has an output of 180 kilowatts per shaft. Siemens has developed this propulsion solution specifically to meet the requirements of smaller ships by making it easily installable in tight spaces.
