Most Bunker Sales in Singapore are Low-sulphur Fuels -BIMCO

Low-sulphur fuels accounted for 84% of total February sales in Singapore, slightly up from 83% in January. Wärtsilä EGC Gets CCS Type Approval

Wärtsilä’s Exhaust Gas Cleaning (EGC) system has been Type Approved by the China Classification Society (CCS). This follows the order for the system from Dalian Shipbuilding Industry for installation onboard the ‘New Treasure’, a new Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC). The ship is being built for Associated Maritime of Hong Kong, part of the China Merchants Energy Shipping group.Full scale testing was carried out after its shipboard installation was completed, and the relevant data was reviewed and reported by Dalian Maritime University, as an independent third party.

Partners Developing LNG-fueled VLCC

Partners involved in a new joint development project (JDP) have set out to design a very large crude carrier (VLCC) that will run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel.Lloyd's Register (LR), China Merchants Energy Shipping Co., Ltd. (CMES), CNOOC Gas and Power Group, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (DSIC), and GazTransport and Technigaz SA (GTT) have teamed up to evaluate design options for an LNG-fueled VLCC that uses a prismatic GTT Mark III membrane LNG tank. IMO Orders Fuels of the Future

The new sulfur, carbon dioxide limits ewill demand precise understanding by ship owners and operators. Globally, new regulations are coming into effect governing the Sulfur Oxide (SOx) limits and CO2 emissions. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has updated the maximum amount of SOx allowed in fuels and the European Commission is introducing new reporting requirements to monitor CO2 emissions. Understanding the impacts of these changes on ship owners and operators is critical given the market conditions for maritime services.

Shippers Brace for IMO's New SOx Rules

IMO to decide whether to introduce rules in 2020, or 2025; EU, China already pushing for stricter regulation. The global shipping industry is bracing for a key regulatory decision that could mark a milestone in reducing maritime pollution, but which could nearly double fuel costs in a sector already reeling from its worst downturn in decades. The shipping industry is by far the world's biggest emitter of sulphur, with the SOx content in heavy fuel oil up to 3,500 times higher than the latest European diesel standards for vehicles.

DNV GL Approval for DSIC's LNG-fuelled VLCC Design

DNV GL has presented Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company Limited (DSIC) with an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate for a new LNG-fuelled very large crude carrier (VLCC) design at the first day of the Marintec China trade fair. The new, innovative design has been found to comply with the Gas Fuelled notation as given in the DNV GL rules for the classification of ships and the recently adopted IGF Code. “This AIP is another step toward the more widespread adoption of LNG as a fuel for shipping,” says Torgeir Sterri, DNV GL Vice President and Regional Manager in Greater China.

Keppel Retrofit VLCC BWTS

Keppel Shipyard undertakes Singapore’s first Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) retrofit project for a VLCC. MOL Tankship Management (Asia) Pte Ltd (MOL) has awarded Keppel Shipyard with a landmark Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) retrofit project. This is the first BWTS retrofit for an existing Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) owned by a Japanese shipowner as well as the first such installation to be undertaken in Singapore. The BWTS to be installed is the JFE Ballast Ace system, which was selected by MOL and supplied by JFE Engineering Corporation.

Building of First Chinese G-type Engine Confirmed

Shanghai ceremony celebrates signing of contract with CMD. At a recent ceremony in China, CMD (CSSC-MES Diesel Co., Ltd.) held the official signing of the contract to construct the first Chinese-built MAN B&W design Green Series 7G80ME-C9.2 engine. Due for delivery in June 2013, the engine is bound for a 319,000-dwt, ABS class VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) to be built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (SWS) for Maran Tankers of Greece. The G-series engine is hallmarked by its SFOC, energy efficiency and ability to meet all Tier II criteria.

Delivery of a New VLCC to Oman Shipping

Oman Shipping Company S.A.O.C. accepted delivery of a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), SAMAIL, from Universal Shipbuilding Corporation, in Kawasaki city inJapan, becoming the 29th vessel to be operated by the company. The 300,000-dwt Panamanian flagged vessel SAMAIL measures 330 x 60 m with a draft of around 22 m. She will be the first VLCC to be technically managed "in house" by OSC’s subsidiary by Oman Ship Management Company S.A.O.C. in Muscat.
