Bloom Energy, Samsung to Design Electric Ships

California-based Bloom Energy, the provider of stationary fuel cells, has announced a collaboration with South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), to design and develop ships powered by Bloom Energy’s solid oxide fuel cell technology.SHI aims to be the first shipbuilder to deliver a large cargo ship for ocean operation powered by fuel cells running on natural gas. Thordon, DDW-D Partner for Shaft Line Conversions

Thordon Bearings and Drydocks World-Dubai (DDW-D) have signed an agreement under which the UAE-based shipyard will work together with Thordon Bearings Inc. to promote the conversion of ships’ oil lubricated propeller shafts to Thordon’s COMPAC open seawater lubricated bearing system. North Sea Trawler Receives MAN Turbocharger Retrofit

MAN Diesel & Turbo recently completed a noteworthy job, carrying out a turbocharger retrofit with just five weeks from first enquiry to turbocharger commissioning. The vessel in question, Faeroese trawler, ‘Sjurdaberg’, was constructed in 1985 and has successfully operated in the North Sea for over 30 years. Equipped with a 1984-built MAN 9L28/32A Alpha engine and NA34/K turbocharger, the trawler has accumulated more than 115,000 operating hours in one of the world’s major fishing grounds.

Total Lubmarine Introduces ECA Compliant Lubricant

Global marine lubricant provider Total Lubmarine has introduced TALUSIA LS 25, a low alkaline lubricant specifically designed for slow speed two stroke engines running distillate fuels with 0.1% sulphur content. The move comes as the shipping industry adapts to comply with the European 0.1% sulphur cap which enters into effect on January 1, 2015. Rolls-Royce Marine Gas Engine EPA Approved

Rolls-Royce announce the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved its C-class engine for sale in the U.S. market. The C-class is a state-of-the art marine gas engine designed to improve fuel efficiency, dramatically cut harmful methane emissions and meet strict international environmental standards set to take effect in 2016. The EPA Certificate of Conformity is issued for the C-engine range from Rolls-Royce. These engines are already in operation on car ferries and coastal ferries in Europe…
