Project Forward Initiative Cuts CO2 Emissions
The Project Forward initiative led by Athens-Based Arista Shipping, with Wärtsilä as one of the participants, demonstrates that with LNG as fuel, an advanced hull design, and highly efficient propulsion machinery, it will be possible to meet the IMO’s target for a 40 percent reduction in carbon intensity by 2030.Model tests of the Project’s concept vessel indicate that the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is well below the currently most stringent Phase III level. The EEDI reflects the CO2 emissions per transport work and is a measure of carbon intensity.

ABS Grants AIP for Wärtsilä HY Hybrid Power Module
Wärtsilä’s hybrid power module, the Wärtsilä HY, has been granted Approval in Principle (AIP) by ABS. Canadian operator Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ) has taken delivery of MV Armand-Imbeau II, a new environmentally friendly, 92-meter-long ferry built by Chantier Davie Canada.The new vessel will operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel, enabling STQ - Québec Province ferries operator - to minimize the environmental impact of its operations. Upgraded Wärtsilä 20 Engine Attracts Multiple Orders
Wärtsilä has received a series of notable orders for the upgraded version of its Wärtsilä 20 engine.A total of 33 engines have been ordered for merchant auxiliary power application in three major shipbuilding projects. The orders, which were booked in June, have been contracted with Wärtsilä Qiyao Diesel Company Ltd (WQDC), the joint venture company of Wärtsilä and Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute (SMDERI).The engines will be installed in 11 new vessels being built in shipyards owned by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC).

GE Powers US' New Littoral Combat Ship
GE's Marine Solutions' LM2500 marine gas turbines now power the U.S. Navy's USS Manchester (LCS 14). This Littoral Combat Ship was commissioned on May 26 by the U.S. Navy in Portsmouth, N.H.Each of the two LM2500 engines produce over 29,500 horsepower, propelling the USS Manchester to speeds of 40+ knots or 46 miles per hour. To date, GE has contracts to provide gas turbines for ships up to LCS 30 (even ship numbers are Austal Independence class ships). In addition, Austal is one of five shipyards that have been awarded a concept design contract for the U.S.
Wärtsilä LNGPac Passes Milestone
Wärtsilä’s Fuel Gas Supply Systems passed a significant milestone with the 100th order being booked. Two new shuttle tankers being built for Singapore based AET Tankers will feature Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel auxiliary engines running primarily on LNG fuel, and fitted with LNGPac units. This contract brought the total number of orders received for this innovative system to 100. Introduced in 2009, the system comprises a bunkering station, the LNG fuel tank and related process equipment, as well as the control and monitoring system.
