EPA Funds Diesel Pollution Abatement Efforts in Mid-Atlantic Region

Vane Brothers Welcomes Latest Tug Newbuild
The Vane Brothers Company, a marine transportation provider headquartered in Baltimore, has taken delivery of Kings Point, the latest in a wave of Maryland-built tugboats. Constructed under the supervision of Vane Senior Port Captain Jim Demske, Kings Point is the 10th of 14 “Sassafras Class” tugboats contracted by Vane Brothers through Chesapeake Shipbuilding of Salisbury, Maryland. Kings Point also has a sister tug, Fort Schuyler, that was launched by Chesapeake Shipbuilding in April and is expected to be delivered this summer.
Chesapeake Launches Tugboat for Vane Brothers
Chesapeake Shipbuilding has launched another tugboat for Vane Brothers, the builder announced today. The tugboat, named Fort Schuyler, represents the 11th tugboat that Chesapeake Shipbuilding has built for Vane Brothers of the 14 contracted. The new tugboat is nearly identical to the previous 10 tugboats built for Vane Brothers - equipped with twin Caterpillar 3512 main engines producing a combined 3,000 horsepower, and a single drum hydraulic towing winch. Ship Operator Fined $1.8m for Oil Discharge
The Hachiuma Steamship Co., LTD pleaded guilty January 30 to violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS), arising from the failure to maintain an accurate oil record book concerning the illegal disposal of oil residue and bilge water overboard the cargo vessel M/V Selene Leader. Chief U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake sentenced Hachiuma Steamship to pay $1.8 million, and placed it on probation for three years during which it is to develop an environmental compliance program. The plea and sentence were announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J.

Torqueedo Sweeps Electric Motor Race
Torqeedo recently won first, second and third places in the 13th annual Wye Island Electric Boat Challenge in St. Michaels, Maryland. This is the second time Torqeedo-powered boats have swept the 24-mile, electric motor-only race. In all the years of the race, any boat with a Torqeedo motor has always finished the marathon and this year was no exception. All Torqeedo-powered vessels crossed the finish line after completing the circumnavigation of Wye Island. This year five boats were powered by Torqeedo motors.
