HMS Prince of Wales Powers Ahead

The second MT30 Gas Turbine Alternator (GTA) has been installed into the U.K. Royal Navy’s latest aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, at Rosyth, the Aircraft Carrier Alliance reported. ‪Generating 36 megawatts (around 50,000 horsepower), the power-dense Rolls-Royce MT30 marine gas turbine is key for naval ships where high power occupying minimum space is essential.‬ Each 120-metric-ton GTA package consists of a GE supplied alternator coupled to a Rolls-Royce supplied MT30 Gas Turbine contained within an enclosure.

MLP 1 Completes Builder's Sea Trials

The Navy's first Mobile Landing Platform, 'USNS Montford Point' (MLP 1), successfully completes builder's sea trials in San Diego. USNS Montford Point was constructed by General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. (NASSCO) and these builder's trials test the vessel's propulsion, ballasting, communications, navigation and mission systems, as well as related support systems. MLP is based on an existing commercial design, the Alaska-class crude oil carrier, ensuring design stability and lower development costs.

UK Aircraft Carrier Forward Island Module to be Shipped

The BAE Systems built Forward Island for 'HMS Queen Elizabeth' to transit by barge for mounting in Rosyth shipyard. The iconic Forward Island, known as Upper Block 07, is the hub of the ship as it contains the main bridge and approximately 100 vital mission systems compartments. Weighing 680 tonnes, this is the first block to depart with her final paint colours applied, all windows fitted and consoles installed, along with 43km of cables and 3,101 pipes. It also proudly displays the HMS Queen Elizabeth crest.

Latest US DofD Navy Contracts Listed

Contract announcements by U.S. Department of Defense (DofD) updated to 26, November 2012. BAE Systems Mayport, Jacksonville, Fla., is being awarded a $6,880,388 contract to perform maintenance and repair work including hull, machinery, electrical, electronics and piping repairs as required during selected restricted availability onboard the USS Taylor (FFG 50). Leveraging on its USN Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) experience, Lockheed Martin offers a Multi-Mission Combatant for navies worldwide. With two Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) currently in the U.S. Navy fleet, two more in production and two others under contract, Lockheed Martin is leveraging experience gained through the LCS program to offer a Multi-Mission Combatant for navies worldwide. The Multi-Mission Combatant is an agile, modular vessel capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots. It provides the power of a larger platform with a smaller crew, similar to the core 40 sailors the U.S.

Navy, IEEE Keep Electrical Ship Standard Current

It’s been a year since we first told you here in Maritime Reporter about the effort to update and rewrite the IEEE-45 Standard for Electrical Installations on Ships. At that time, we urged qualified experts to offer suggestions and volunteer to join in the effort as members of the committee. Thanks to those who agreed to support the committees work, a great deal of progress has been made, says Moni Islam, chair of the IEEE-45 Standard Coordinating Committee. Kongsberg Simulators with Multiple DNV Approvals

Engine room simulators approved to the highest DNV certificate level. A total of 14 Kongsberg Maritime Engine Room Simulator models received new Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Statements of Compliance in December 2011. The approvals are according to the revised standards laid out in DNV – Standard for Certification of Maritime Simulators No. 2.14 January 2011, which is based on the requirements of STCW Convention, Regulation I/12 and include the new 2010 amended convention that came into force from January 1st 2012.

JHSV 2: Austal Starts Construction

Less than one year after beginning fabrication of Spearhead (JHSV 1), Austal has commenced construction on Vigilant (JHSV 2), the second of up to ten 103-m Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV). Austal was selected as prime contractor in November 2008 to design and build the first JHSV, with options for nine additional vessels expected to be exercised between FY09 and FY13. Since then, Austal has received construction contracts for JHSV 1, JHSV 2, and JHSV 3 and Long Lead Time Material contracts for JHSV 4 and JHSV 5.
