Scania USA Taps Laborde Products as Gulf Coast and Inland Distributor

Engine manufacturer Scania USA said it has appointed Laborde Products as its new distributor for Scania Marine products for the Gulf Coast and inland waterways regions, effective November 1.The Covington, La. headquartered engine and power systems distributor will take on sales, service and dealer development for Scania marine engines, ranging from 220 to 1,150 horsepower, for Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Southern Illinois, Southern Indiana, Southern Ohio…

Imagine a settlement over falsifying emission levels in another transportation sector dropping money onto your deck. Who knew? But it’s true. The $2.9 billion settlement fund Volkswagen agreed to capitalize for distribution across all 50 states, tribal lands and Puerto Rico, as a result of “dieselgate,” its criminal dodging of required auto emission levels, presents an unparalleled opportunity to maritime companies that want to move their noxious diesel engines up a couple of EPA notches, and stick someone else with close to half the bill or more.

US Navy: Bigger is Better, but at What Cost?

The U.S. Navy has a balanced fleet, but it wants to grow bigger and better. Will the budget allow both? Maritime Reporter's March 2017 cover story on the U.S. Navy was all about the numbers. There exists several plans to grow the fleet beyond the current number of 308 ships, the Mitre recommendation of 414 ships, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment 340-ship proposal, and the Navy’s decision to grow the fleet to 355 ships, and the Trump administration’s 350. With so many numbers being bandied about, there are even more suggestions on how to get there.

Mercury Marine Powers the Pontoon Market

The pontoon market has been the fastest growing boat segment over the past 12 months, having grown by eight percent in 2015 and on pace to match that growth 2016, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). As boaters around the globe are migrating to higher horsepower engines for their pontoons, Mercury Marine aims to help spur that growth. “It’s really driven by the consumers through our dealer network across the country and Canada,” said John Sweeney, Forest River marketing director.

Scania Bolsters Inland River Distribution

NRE Power Systems, who currently represents Scania’s latest marine platform: 13- and 16-liter engines for auxiliary and propulsion applications; and currently distributes them in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky and Texas, will now represent West Virginia, southern Ohio, southern Indiana and southern Illinois.   NRE is also a distributor for Scania industrial engines and distributes them in Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi.

MARAD Awards Grant for Green Tug Conversion

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has granted $450,000 to AEP River Operations of St. Louis, Missouri, to modify the Motor Vessel (M/V) Christopher Parsonage into a fuel-efficient hybrid vessel that conserves fuel and reduces emissions. The modification will provide the 180-foot tug boat, which operates along the lower Mississippi River, with a hybrid generator set attached to the main engine that will provide auxiliary power, which would normally be produced from the diesel generator.

Laborde Now a Steyr Motors Distributor

To help increase business and provide even better service for its customers, Laborde Products has been chosen as a Steyr Motors distributor. The company will offer sales, service and support throughout Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin. Laborde will also offer dealer support along the Eastern seaboard of Mexico, from the Texas border to Cancun. Steyr Motors M1 Monoblock engines are known for the lowest weight in class at less than 1.2 kg/hp and the highest power density, up to 92 hp/ltr.

Cummins Inc. has named Jim Schacht General Manager for the Commercial Marine Business. Working in close cooperation with the Cummins distributor network, Schacht will be responsible for all commercial marine business activities for the Engine Business Unit (EBU) globally, including business development and support. Low Mississippi Water Levels Threaten US Economy

The American Waterways Operators (AWO) & Waterways Council, Inc. (WCI) warn barge transportation could stop in December. AWO and WCI call  upon Congress and the Administration to address a developing situation on the Mississippi River which could effectively bring commerce on the Mighty Mississippi to a halt in early December. Water releases from dams on the upper Missouri River are planned to be significantly scaled back later this month and these reductions are expected to negatively impact the Mississippi River water level between St. Louis and Cairo, IL beginning December 1.

Osage Repowers with Laborde and Mitsubishi

Although the basic design of inland towboats has not changed in decades, there is a revolution in their propulsion systems. To meet strict environmental regulations while minimizing operating costs, Osage Marine Services has once again turned to Laborde Products to supply state-of-the-art Mitsubishi engines to repower a harbor tug. Jackie Sue was refitted with twin Mitsubishi S12A2-Y2MPTK engines rated 940 hp at 1,940 rpm. This is the second such project for the St. Louis, Missouri, fleeting company, with nine more on the horizon.

Laborde Repowers Harbor Tug Fleet

Osage Marine Service, Inc., a fleeting service with locations throughout the Midwest, knew it could trust Laborde Products to provide quality, reliable products when harbor tug Deborah Ann was in need of an engine overhaul. Laborde supplied Osage's St. Louis, Missouri branch with twin Mitsubishi S6A3-Y2MPTK engines rated 483 hp at 1,840 rpm to repower the vessel that is mainly used for switching docks and working line boats. Osage Marine already has a set of 940 hp engines from Laborde for the next repower and four more on order for next year.
