Hurtigruten’s New Hybrid Expedition Ships Named
Hurtigruten’s two new hybrid powered expedition ships under construction at Kleven Yards have been named Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen, after two influential Norwegian polar pioneers from the era when the company itself first started offering adventure travels. The vessels are due to be delivered in 2018 and 2019. “On December 14, it will be exactly 105 years since Roald Amundsen became the first person in the world to plant his flag on the South Pole,” notes Daniel Skjeldam, CEO, Hurtigruten.
Norwegian Fish Food Carrier to Run on LNG
Rolls-Royce has signed a $6.5 million contract with Tersan Shipyard in Turkey to supply a liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion package for a cargo carrier designed by NSK Ship Design for Norwegian ship owner NSK Shipping. The vessel will deliver fish food on behalf of BioMar Group. The new cargo carrier will be a slightly larger sister ship to NSK Shipping’s MS Høydal which was the world’s first LNG powered cargo vessel and which was delivered from Tersan Shipyard in 2012. Both ships are designed by NSK Ship Design.
Tanker Converted to LNG-electric Propulsion
Bergen Tankers’ 95-meter-long chemical and product tanker Bergen Viking has returned to service following its conversion from diesel-electric to liquefied natural gas (LNG)-electric propulsion. Delivered in 2007, the Rolls-Royce powered vessel supplies diesel and petrol along the Norwegian coastline in trade for Statoil as part of a fleet of six vessels owned by Bergen Tankers AS. Bergen Viking’s retrofit saw four of the ship’s original six diesel generating sets replaced with two Rolls-Royce Bergen C6 generating sets.

Environmental shortcomings of fuel oil, particularly traditional heavy bunkers, were brought under increasing scrutiny as the twentieth century came to a close.

Polish Shipyard Launch LNG Powered Ro/Pax Ferry
Remontowa Shipbuilding launch building no. B 613/1, the largest ferry of this kind built by the yard to date. Remontowa Shipbuilding says it is the largest production shipyard in Poland, and the only one with extensive experience in the construction of ecological, gas powered ferries. During last five years they have built eight gas powered ferries to serve local car – passenger transportation on the Norwegian coast. In contrast to previously delivered ferries fuelled by diesel or gas power, this one will be powered only by LNG and emergency CNG gas engines.
