Newport News Installs Propellers on USN Aircraft Carrier
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced that the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) has put on significant weight in the dry dock at its Newport News Shipbuilding division with the installation of four 30-ton bronze propellers. At 21 feet in diameter, each propeller spins to push the aircraft carrier through the water. "Installation of the propellers culminates more than 10 months of focused work by numerous trades in support of installing the underwater shafting," said Rolf Bartschi, NNS' vice president, CVN 78 carrier construction.
HII Awarded CVN 72 Refuelling & Overhaul Contract
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) awarded a $2.6-billion cost-plus-incentive-fee contract for work on the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier 'Abraham Lincoln' (CVN 72). New-build Aircraft Carrier Island Top Off
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) plant the 555 mt island aboard 90% complete US carrier 'Gerald R. Ford'. HII celebrated significant progress as the 555-metric ton island was lowered onto the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) at the company's Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division. The island will serve as the command center for flight deck operations aboard the first of the next-generation class of aircraft carriers. Susan Ford Bales, daughter of the late President Gerald R. Ford and Betty Ford, serves as the ship's sponsor and participated in the event.
USS Enterprise Ceremony 'Full House'
Nearly 12,000 past and current crewmembers, family & friends attended the inactivation of aircraft carrier 'USS Enterprise'. Enterprise, the world's first nuclear powered aircraft carrier, recently completed its 25th and final deployment and returned to its homeport of Naval Station Norfolk for a scheduled inactivation, held prior to the ship's terminal offload program and subsequent decommissioning. The inactivation ceremony was the last official public event for the ship, and served as a celebration of life for the ship and the more than 100,000 Sailors who served aboard.
First Nuclear-Powered Carrier Completes Last Deployment

US Aircraft Carrier 'Enterprise' Nears Retirement
After 51 years of distinguished service, USS Enterprise (CVN 65) will ceremonially inactivate later this year at Norfolk Naval Station, in Norfolk, Va. The inactivation ceremony will be the last official public event for the ship, and will serve as a celebration of life for the ship and the more than 100,000 Sailors who served aboard. Details of the actual ceremony are still being finalized; however, numerous dignitaries and thousands of veterans of the ship are expected to attend the event.
Aircraft Carrier Funding Approved
Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) said that its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division has received a $43.4 million modification to a previously awarded contract from the U.S. Navy for purchase of materials for the construction of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), the second ship in the Navy's newest class of carriers. The funds awarded to NNS will be used to purchase major, long-lead-time equipment, such as the ship's elevator machinery and large pumps.
HII Awarded Refueling Contract for USS Abraham Lincoln
Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. announced that its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division has received a $383 million cost-plus-fixed-fee, level-of-effort contract option to continue planning work for the refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). If all contract options are exercised, the full value of the contract could reach $678 million. The contract option is for work performed from Feb. 27, 2012, until Feb.
